Any locals who know what time school starts for five/six year olds in Edinburgh? I am thinking this may have been a child being taken to school, running ahead of parent. Or a younger child coming home after parent has dropped off an older child, but again running ahead so they seemed to be alone. Is there a school near to the sighting?

I believe it's usually around 9 o'clock. My daughter is a similar size to Mikaeel (she's older, just small) and we give her a certain amount of freedom for running ahead- nothing unsafe, but it should be disconcerting to see someone her size "alone". I am constantly amazed by how many people either don't notice her or assume she's with someone other than us, so it's not out of the realm of possibilty that M could have made it down streets without being stopped. Given the hat details it seems even more unlikely, and the child probably is some intrepid kid stretching their legs and independence with an adult supervising them but not immediately obvious. But I hope I'm wrong, for Mikaeel's sake.

SKY tv reporter now broadcasting from the street where the cctv footage covers. Its lined with houses/flats each sides from what I can see. The reporter just said that it is one of the main school routes, so would have been very busy at 8.30am.

Now talking about "one of the witnesses", so perhaps more than one sighting?

When they say going toward the sea, I believe that they just mean that he was headed north on West Pilton Gardens, as the location is not real close to the sea, probably a little more than 1/2 mile from the sea and not a direct shot, as the road ends at the next block.

i dont think the police believe its him, they want to rule him out so wont show cctv until more say they saw him , if they thought it was him , that image would be everywhere

Could it not be that this wee boy thats been sighted was simply just running ahead of his mum on his way to school, or had run out his garden gate ahead of his mum and the witnesses didnt see her.

And you dont see a 3yr old on his own and do nothing.

This is what I keep thinking - that mum was behind, trying to keep up with a bag of shopping and a buggy, or something.

I know when I take my daughter to school the street leading up to the School is packed with parents and kids running ahead, it's hard to know which kids belongs to which parent. A lot of Mums walk down the street together, some pushing prams, while groups of kids run to the end of the pavement and wait for Mums to catch up.

They have just showed on sky news where the sighting was. It's a path that goes right by a small play area, climbing frame, swings etc. Child running ahead of parent to the park? Or on way to school and runs off onto the path to the park. So many possibilities at a busy time and area.

That's what I'm thinking too. Because, if it is a busy school run route, and other parents were around and saw a 3 year old running along on their own, I'm sure one of them would have done something.

You tend to know all the children and mums/dads on the route, as they'll all be going to the same primary school - so if a "new" child appeared on the route, without an adult acompanying him, I'm sure more people would have noticed.

The fact that the witness was in a car driving past makes me think they may not have been aware of/seen the whole picture..... and that a parent was probably close by.

Surely the best thing would be to show the cctv and see how many school run mums call in to identify the child?
