Could there be an extraction point IN the deep hole area? That would add up.

IMO if a fisherman had fallen in there once while pumping was happening then only just managed to get out that could explain the red writing on the sign on the tree.

One would have thought the first thing searchers would do if they were looking in a river would be get a map of the entire drainage system within the nearest mile or so. They must have done this.

It could be if its purpose is to drain water from the land into the river, or to draw water from the river to fill something like a lake.

Yes, it’s what I was querying, there’s also a road that leads down to the top of the upper field, extension of Garstang Road by Rowanwater.

as someone pointed out above there is a proper fence around rowanwater so no access towards Garstang Road from upper field

There is a gate (with a keycode entry) through that wooden fence at the LH end as it enters the trees.
