Judge has intervened in the middle of an exchange between Russell Bishop and the prosecution barrister. “Now gentleman ... we will proceed better if one asks and the other answers. Let’s just calm down and go back to the question”.

Brian Altman QC: the killer in 1986 was the same person who attacked in 1990 and that man is you?
Russell Bishop: No.
Brian Altman QC: “Do you agree much of what you did in 1990 was identical to what the killer of Nicola and Karen did to them?
Russell Bishop: I totally disagree

The mothers of the two schoolgirls are at the back of court listening to Russell Bishop give evidence in the witness box.

Russell Bishop again denies having a sexual interest in children and that the attack he carried out in 1990 on a 7-year-old girl was because of a three year hate campaign against him.

Russell Bishop to prosecutor Brian Altman QC: “It’s all rubbish isn’t it. What am I on trial here for?
Russell Bishop turns to Judge: “Excuse me is this legal?”
Judge: “Yes it is and if isn’t I’ll stop it”

Brian Altman QC: asks Russell Bishop why he didn’t take someone his own size instead of taking a child off the street in Brighton in 1990.
Russell Bishop: “There was no one else”

Russell Bishop tells jury he is not a paedophile.

Brian Altman QC on 1990 offences: You are just the victim?
Russell Bishop: No
Brian Altman QC: That’s what you are trying to do
Russell Bishop: Not in any way, shape or form.
Russell Bishop to prosecution barrister: “don’t make me look like an idiot” when Brian Altman QC asks him why he didn’t mention his suicide bid wasn’t mentioned in prison reports.

Russell Bishop telling jury he carried out an assault on a 7-year-old girl in 1990 in Brighton partly because of revenge. He says he and his family were harassed in the years after he had been acquitted in the first trial of the schoolgirls murder.
Jury hearing about a post tarriff parole assessment report on Russell Bishop in 2006 where he said he had no sexual interest in children.

Brian Altman QC: Do you have a sexual interest in children?
Russell Bishop: No
Brian Altman QC: Do you agree in 2003 you were claiming there had been no sexual motivation (1990 offence) Russell Bishop: Whatever. It wasn’t fuelled by sexual motivation.

Jury hears in 2003 that Russell Bishop was appealing against attempted murder conviction (to do with 1990 offences)
Brian Altman QC: what did they do with your appeal?
Russell Bishop: Sent it back.
Brian Altman QC: Did they take it on?
Russell Bishop: No

Brian Altman asking about 1990 offences still and when Russell Bishop was interviewed in 2001 by a parole board member.
Brian Altman QC: Why did you deny that you were guilty of attempted murder (of 7-year-old girl)
Russell Bishop: I am not guilty of attempted murder
Russell Bishop on 1990 offences: I’ve always been ashamed ... you cover things up ... by denial.
Brian Altman QC: On Friday you told the jury you agreed with the agreed facts that the jury have about the 1990 offences.
Russell Bishop: Within a degree
Brian Altman QC turning to offences carried out by Russell Bishop in 1990 where he tried to kill a 7-year-old girl in Brighton.
Russell Bishop tells jury he is still in prison serving a life sentence.
Brian Altman QC: You hope to come out one day?
RB: Hope but it’s unlikely
Brian Altman QC is questioning Russell Bishop about when Russell Bishop said he tried to end his life and his children’s lives in 1990. Brian Altman QC: You considered killing you and your children but didn’t
Russell Bishop: Thankfully no.
Brian Altman QC: Did you tell the jury any lies?
Russell Bishop: I don’t believe so, no.
Brian Altman QC: Did you tell any lies?
Russell Bishop: no

Apologies, I think Ive just posted these tweets out of sequence, but nevertheless, you can get the overall view of the questions and RBs responses. Sounds like he's in a difficult mood yet again.

In 1986, the Old Bailey jury was told, a Pinto sweatshirt allegedly linking Russell Bishop to the sexually motivated killings of Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows was examined on the same table in the same room as the girls’ clothes.

Bishop told the Old Bailey that when civilian scenes of crime officer Edward Redman was cross-examined during the 1987 trial, it emerged that “Officer Redman examined the Pinto sweatshirt and the children’s clothing on the same table in the same room.”

Bishop told the court that the Pinto sweatshirt was not his. He said that on the day of the murders, he had worn a blue “flecky” sweatshirt with a diagonal stripe across it.

Bishop told the court that in 1993 he had sent the police a transcript of Mr Redman’s 1987 trial evidence.

He mentioned this to the police who rearrested him over Karen and Nicola’s murders in 2016, but, the court, heard, by that time no surviving transcripts of Mr Redman’s evidence could be found.

Hi Mrs M - I agree, not heavy exposure at the moment - Friday was probably the heaviest day, because RB was giving evidence - and looks like today we have good coverage as he continues in the witness box.

Lack of cover could be because it is a second trial and RB is already serving life - so not the same level of sensationalism for the press as if it were a new case.

A convicted sex attacker told a court he sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl “to belittle and shame her”.

He added that on February 4 1990, when he saw the girl, he had been in a furious temper having injured himself trying to fix his car, and he had mistakenly thought the child had said something to him.

Denying a sexual motive, Bishop said I was bloody angry at her and everyone who had done wrong to me.”

The court also heard that in 2006 Bishop had explained the attack by saying he had no sexual interest in children, but having faced three years of accusations that he was a paedophile attacker, he had thought, “I might as well do it.”

He added: "It could have been anyone.

Mr Altman continued to suggest to Bishop that he had a sexual interest in children, and turned to letters he had written to a 13-year-old girl in the spring of 1987 while on remand awaiting trial

Mr Altman quoted from one letter in which Bishop had written “When I get out, I think you know what we will end up doing.”

Mr Altman asked: “You were suggesting sex?”

Bishop replied: “I don’t know, and if I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”

In one letter Bishop had written: “In the B and B was the first time and it’s gone from there. You were 11 years old there …”

Mr Altman said: “You knew she was 11 years old in that B and B. It’s now March 1987. You couldn’t possibly have believed she would soon be 16.”

Bishop replied: “No, I disagree.”

Bishop said he had simply been reacting to what the girl had written, and when Mr Altman expressed scepticism, the two men started talking over each other until told by the judge: “We will proceed much better if one person asks the question and the other answers.”

Bishop repeatedly insisted that he had thought the girl was 15 and would be 16 by the time he left the remand prison, adding that he stopped writing once he knew her real age.

Mr Altman, however, told the defendant he must have known the girl’s age all along, because he had met her while he had been living in the same bed and breakfast accommodation as her in 1984.

Court resumes.

Judge tells jury they will observe Mr Bishop is in the dock and not in the witness box. “It’s because he had declined to not give any further evidence”.

Judge: “I have given him time to consider that but that is his position. I will give you directions in due course as to how you should approach that”.

Judge to jury: the effect of that will be no more questions will be asked in cross examination and his evidence is at an end.

Judge to jury: There is further evidence to be called on his behalf but that is not ready to be called this afternoon.

Jury leaves courtroom.

( I think there's a slight typo there on the tweet ..... declined to give any further evidence ........makes more sense )

Recap: Russell Bishop - accused of murdering two Brighton schoolgirls 32 years ago - declines to give any further evidence. The 52-year-old spent less than an hour and a half under cross- examination this morning in the witness box.

That's a bit cheeky from Bishop after Barrie Fellows was compelled to give evidence. (I assume he was compelled.)

  • #132
All sounds very dramatic! Stare off I the court room

Agree Legally and Mrs M - I dont think the Jury will be too impressed by RBs performance in the witness box - he comes across as a very awkward, confrontational so and so ( other words are available ! )

and yes, I would guess BF was compelled to give evidence, which does seem tough on him, now that RB has just opted out
