Very sobering reading again, maybe a controversial opinion but I hope the prosecution wraps up the closing speech tomorrow.
I feel that the jury will have put all the pieces of this case together by now.

from donahughe:

That's it for today, back tomorrow morning - Mr Johnson indicates he may finish his closing speech then. Defence closing, led by Ben Myers KC will follow

I really think you are right.

If guilty...

Did she think she could carry on attacking patients indefinitely and nobody would be any wiser?

Her (alleged) arrogance and stupidity is astounding.
Is she for real???

I think that (if guilty) her delusions completely took over her.

Listening to Prosecution now she must be shocked and reeling that her (alleged) cunning and "gaslighting" proved transparent and easy to see for intelligent investigators.

It must be real blow for her Ego.

"They will be looking silly"
What a silly comment!

Unbelievable o_O

JMO

Must admit I did enjoy the irony of the ‘they will look silly’ message. Who looks silly now?

I fully agree I think, if guilty, she thought she was above everyone and that her main chosen method (air) could not be traced. With the insulin I think that’s why it went in the TPN bag if guilty. She knew if the insulin was revealed there’d be no way of knowing how it got there and little chance of anyone remembering who hung the bag up. I think IMO if guilty, the method of air was chosen due to how difficult it would be to prove. Same for the insulin being put in the bag, although if guilty I think she realised that method was much more risky which could be why it was only used twice (that we know of anyway).

Had all the babies in this case been poisoned with insulin I’m sure that the attacks would have been uncovered much much sooner. By using other methods along with air such as overfeeding, insulin, throat trauma, liver injury. It caused slightly different symptoms in each child, some bled while others did not, some vomited, some had their tube dislodged, some screamed the likes of which was extremely rare in neonates. Very very calculating and well thought out if guilty IMO.

This wasn’t just some mad killer on a rampage with a syringe of insulin, this was allegedly someone lurking in the shadows, disguised as the person who was providing care and compassion, choosing their moments, altering notes in the lead up as they prepared to pounce, making sure they were there when the alarm was raised and in some cases were part of the resus efforts, and provided a shoulder to cry on for devestated parents. Unbelievably cold and evil, if guilty.

"Letby allegedly injected air intravenously into Child D's circulation while the infant's designated nurse was on a break.

Mr Johnson said there were no problems until Letby's colleague left nursery one at 1am.

He said: 'Just as in the cases of (Child C), (Child G), (Child I), (Child J), (Child K) and (Child N) - all of them collapsed when their designated nurse left the room or went on a break.

[...]

The prosecutor also pointed out an unsigned blood gas reading of Child D at 1.14am which he said Letby admitted was in her handwriting.

[...]

'While people do forget things in a busy neonatal unit... we all make mistakes but it's the timing of the 'errors', isn't it. It's the pattern of the errors.

'It's the power of circumstantial evidence.'

Another chart reading showed an intravenous infusion of liquid for Child D recorded at 1.25am and co-signed by Letby and designated nurse Caroline Oakley, he said.

Mr Johnson said: 'Caroline Oakley, who was not actually there at the time, couldn't explain it.

'This is clear evidence, isn't it, that Lucy Letby in the absence of Caroline Oakley gave an intravenous injection of air to (Child D) five minutes before she collapsed.'

[...]

'You might ask yourself why won't she tell you the truth? Because the truth is bad for her. It's bad.'"

What a harrowing read :(

I think the last day of Prosecution's Closing Speech might be the ultimate blow for the defendant.

To add...

9 months ago the Prosecutor started his Opening Speech with

"Malevolent Presence".

I have a feeling these will be the last words of his Closing Speech.

So here we have it -

The nine babies who collapsed just after their parents left -

Babies - B, C, E, H, I, M, N, O and P

The seven babies who collapsed just after their designated nurses left the room or went on a break -

Babies C, D, G, I, J, K and N

And I'll just point out the babies she was designated nurse for when they collapsed, bearing in mind there are multiple allegations on different shifts for some of the babies -

Babies A, E, G, H, I, N, O, P and Q

Simple yet powerful. Especially bearing in mind that in court he will have listed the babies'' real names rather than Baby A, Baby B etc.

So true. When I stumbled upon a tweet where someone had used a baby's real name, it was so much more intense and I felt even more emotional about their death. :(

And the jurors have heard from the grieving parents, and seen the parents every court day for 8 months.

So the triplets were born on 21st June 2016, a day before the one year anniversary of Baby D's death on the 22nd June. LL is then accused of killing Baby O on 23rd, Baby P on the 24th and trying to kill Baby Q on 25th June.

If guilty, and if the third triplet hadn't been moved out of COCH I wonder if she was planning to kill him on 25th (then instead tried to kill Baby Q). If she had been "successful" that would have given her anniversaries on the 21,22,23,24 and 25 of June!

21 June- Triplets born (2016)
22 June- Baby D died (2015)
23 June- Baby O died (2016)
24 June -Baby P died (2016)
25 June- Baby Q attempted murder (2016)

All JMO, IF guilty.

Oh I remember the day one of the reporters accidentally used the baby's real name, too. Such a sobering moment. Heartbreaking.

I’m truly glad I missed that. There’s a strange awful comfort in not knowing, which makes me feel terrible. I’m just not sure I could know and still be here reading this every day.

I was shocked when I came across a list of the babies who had died in an old article. I was horrified, left the site immediately and thankfully can't remember a single one.

Thanks for listing these so clearly. So, let me get this straight, just to be sure. Excluding the insulin cases obviously, it's the case that either the designated nurse or the parent(s) had left shortly before for 16 of the remaining 20 charges?

Wow she was designated nurse for 5 of the 7 deaths (if this is for child I’s final collapse?) . IMO if guilty, being the designated nurse for a baby could mean you had more opportunity to do harm and do harm ‘successfully’, there could have been the opportunity to for example do harm then observe an infant declining before raising the alarm as late as possible or when you heard another colleague coming, at which point you’d be sure that enough damage had been done so that a successful resuscitation would be less likely….

The fact that even on the day shifts babies collapsed when their parents happened to leave their side for a short time makes this IMO all the more damning. Understandably at night there wouldn’t be any parents present but in the day parents are popping in and out, spending time with their babies. The chances that a baby would collapse when their parents had left their side, and when no others were present to witness the start of the decline is quite unlikely in the day time IMO. Remembering again that not one collapse began while parents were at the cot side, not a single one. MOO

There are 22 charges but that doesn't include the three alleged attempted murders of baby I because she is charged with her murder, so there are actually 25 incidents.

The designated nurse had left baby I on two of the four alleged incidents (3 attempt/1 murder), so it's actually 17 not 16 occasions. So if you take off the two insulin cases, it is 17 of 23 incidents where other people had just left.

Formal language of reporting
VS
Emotive reaction of the public
