Abusive step-father 'killed toddler by smashing his head against fireplace then kept the murder secret for 50 years before victim's brother revealed the truth after seeing Facebook post'

An abusive stepfather carried the chilling secret of a toddler's brutal murder with him for almost 50 years before he was finally accused, a court has been told.

David Dearlove, 71, always maintained that Paul Booth, 19 months, died as the result of an accidental fall from his bed in October 1968.

But he is now accused of having swung the boy into a fireplace, causing catastrophic injuries which led to his death.

His alleged crime went unreported for decades until Paul's brother Peter, who was just four when Paul died, saw a faded photograph of the youngster being held by Dearlove on Facebook in 2015.

The trial in this case has now started and is expected to take several weeks.

The baby's mother has since died.

GUILTY!

[h=1]Pensioner found guilty of toddler's 1968 murder after victim's brother, then aged three, comes forward as a witness[/h]
A stepfather who swung a toddler by the ankles and bashed his head against a fireplace then lied about it for almost 50 years has been convicted of murder.

There was no visible reaction from the defendant when the guilty verdict was delivered, but there were gasps from the public gallery where members of his family were sitting.

Stepdad, 71, who killed 19-month-old boy by swinging him into a fireplace in 1968 is FINALLY jailed for life as the boy's family speak of relief after their 47-year 'journey for justice'

The family of a toddler murdered by his stepfather 50 years ago have spoken of their relief after a murder probe sparked by a Facebook picture finally gave them justice.

David Dearlove was seen attacking 19-month-old Paul Booth in 1968 by the little boy's brother Peter, then aged just three, after he crept downstairs for a drink.

But the killer avoided justice for decades until Paul's brother saw a faded photograph of the youngster being held by Dearlove on Facebook in 2015.
