''Cases in Cornwall dating all the way back to the 1960s and as recently as 2020 are still unsolved. Bodies discovered by the emergency services undergo a formal identification process so they can be returned to their friends and family, but not every body can be named.

Information is available publicly for those who may be able to help identify them. According to the UK Missing Persons Unit and the National Crime Agency, there are still eight people who have been found in Cornwall over the past 53 years who remain unidentified.''

''St Mary's, Isles of Scilly

The body of a man, aged between 40 and 60, was found on the beach at Porth Minick, St Mary's on February 21, 1979. It is believed he had been in the sea for at least four months. Of medium build and 5ft 4ins tall, he was wearing an all-wool Eltex vest and a two-tone blue and white summer shirt.

He was wearing a wedding ring with the inscription 'Georgio and Katrina 1956'. Described as white European, the man had greying dark brown hair.''

''In the UK there are currently more than 1,000 open cases where a body has been found, but not identified. In this week’s episode, ‘The Missing’ explores one such case now under investigation by the team at Locate International, unsolved since 1979. Listen here.

On 21st February 1979, the body of a man was discovered on Porth Minick beach on St. Mary’s, the largest inhabited island in the Isles of Scilly. The initial investigation was unable to ascertain his identity, and for decades the case has remained unresolved. Now, Locate International are examining the case, alongside twenty-two others, with hopes of finally providing answers for the missing man’s family and loved ones. Among the small clues available to the team was an inscription on the man’s wedding band reading ‘Giorgios and Katrina 1956’.

In episode four of ‘The Missing’, Locate International investigator Emma Tilley discusses how the team are tracing marriage records, pursuing leads from the public and have even tracked down the unknown man’s final resting place. As the team make an international breakthrough, could it be that they’ve finally identified Giorgios?''

Body which washed up on beach may have been on board doomed ship
''Investigators from a cold cases team believe the body of a man who washed up on a beach in the Isles of Scilly 40 years ago may have been a Greek crewman on board one of two ships involved in shipping disasters in the Seventies - and now his final resting place has also been found.

Following an original appeal, which saw thousands of people around the world make use of social media to come up with information, the team at Locate International are finally hoping to be able to solve the ‘ring of mystery’ case.''

“Through undertaking further research into this line of enquiry, we have since become aware of a number of shipping disasters that occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean in the months leading up to ‘Georgio’ being found on Porth Minick beach on 21 Feb 1979.”

''He said: “We are now focused on the oil tanker Andros Patria (December 31, 1978) and MV Tenorga (December 28, 1978) disasters as we believe both of these ships had Greek crews, some of whom were tragically lost at sea.

“By obtaining the names of those lost at sea, we hope to find someone called ‘Georgio’. We will then conduct further enquiries with the aim of solving the ‘Ring of Mystery’.”
The first thing I thought "fallen from a ship". The name Katrina is also used in the Netherlands. Katrina is derived from Katharina . Katharina is a girl's name that most likely comes from Greek. It is related to the word 'katharos', which means 'pure, clean'.

The Greek-flagged oil tanker Andros Patria, which together with her sister ships, the Andros Master, Andros Texas y Andros Apolon, belongs to the Piraeus fleet of the Oceanic Oil Transport Corporation, carried a cargo of 208,000 tons of crude oil from the Persian Gulf and on the way to Rotterdam (The Netherlands) Due to the spill of 60,000 tons of crude oil and the burning of the ship, only 3 of the 33 crew members were saved............

It would be some time before the bodies emerged. And a total of 11 dead and 19 missing. Only the three crew members who decided to stay on board were saved. Petrolero Andros Patria (1970 - 1979)

Can somebody translate the inscription in the ring to Greek. Something like this? Γεώργιο & Αικατερίνη (Georgios & Katherina/Catherina/Catharina/Katrina)
