They will choose the new jury on Monday - this will be a completely new panel whose jury duty would have been starting at Preston on Monday in any event.
They will be selected in the usual way.

Unbelievably horrific.

The prosecutor is now outlining some of the injuries which Preston had sustained. “In his brief life he was routinely ill treated, sexually abused and physically assaulted. At the time of Preston’s death he was found to have sustained around 40 traumatic injuries over the course of the time he had been in their care.

"Injuries that included at least 30 external bruises, internal bruising to his mouth and throat, internal bruising to his anus, his bowel and bladder, lacerations to his anus and rectum, and features that were indicative of a perforated bowel. He had a healing fracture to his left upper arm that was non-accidental.”

There seems to be more detail in the reporting of this trial than the other. The poor jury will be traumatised from watching the content, how anyone does this to a child I do not know 😩

This is extremely disturbing! I haven't read a case like this in a while. Two monsters

It's definitely one of the most shocking cases I can remember. Very difficult to even think about the suffering Preston must have gone through with no ability to call for help or make sense of why this was being done to him.

'Defendants were wholly unsuitable to the role of adoptive parents' jury hears
Mr Wright KC concludes: “These defendants were wholly unsuitable to the role of adoptive parents. That became patently obvious when, for Preston, it was too late.”

'It ended up killing him,' prosecution tells jury

Mr Wright KC says: “We say there were warning signs for all to see that this was ever increasingly likely to lead to very serious physical harm if he was left in Jamie Varley’s company. It ended up killing him.”

I'm close enough to be able to attend this trial but unfortunately I don't think I have the fortitude to. Prestons injuries and cause of death are absolutely horrific to read and I sincerely hope they are jailed for life, both of them.

I can't understand how it wasn't flagged up after turning up to hospital with him three times in the space of three months following his adoption. I fully believe his death could have been prevented if there was further scrutiny on these admissions or additional follow up from adoption services especially with regards to the repeat hospital admissions. I don't know what the answer is but I know something more needs to be done, Preston was killed within three months of being adopted which means the signs of abuse were likely there and missed far before he was murdered.
