Hello! I am a long time lurker on here. I found this site when Joanna Yeates disappeared and have followed different cases and trials on here. People's ideas and views are very interesting.

I decided to join as there have been several questions posed here, some of which I think I can answer. I have studied UK criminal law, although I am not a professional in this area, so please understand the points I make are my own opinions, based on my studies.

It's Day 23, we'll hear closing speeches for JI & DD. Here's a run down of how a trial like this works:
http://www.itv.com/news/west/2015-10-07/the-becky-watts-trial-how-will-it-work/

NOTE that this link from ITV is from just before the public part of the trial started. At that time, it was not known that NM had pleaded guilty to his charges with the exception of Murder and Conspiracy to Kidnap, both of which he is pleading not guilty to.

I just had a look through Becky's FB page. One thing that stood out to me was on her last profile pic there are a couple of shares, and on one of those shares is a screen shot apparently from SB, Becky's aunt. I'll paraphrase: Finally able to tell you all who did it, had to keep quiet to ensure we'd get Becky back.

Makes me wonder if the family knew that NM/SH had done something for a while before arrests were made?

I think they suspected from day one. Probably didn't want to think it, but I think in some respect they knew. I think I said this when NM/SH were arrested. DG's tearful appeal made much more sense. I remember some of us thinking it was a bit off, a bit of an over reaction (at the time) In hindsight it was pretty damn understandable if you think about it.

The crown no longer contend JI was involved in the storage of #beckywatts, only the transportation on the night of Feb 23/24

Originally alleged JI was involved in the transport of Becky's remains and subsequent storage. Now say it's just the transportation

If she had refused to unlock her phone it can take months to bypass the security on some phones (iPhones for example).

Similarly if messages needed to be recovered from online accounts (WhatsApp, Snapchat, Twitter, etc) it can take months to get access from the provider if passwords are not surrendered voluntarily.

If texts needed to be recovered from the phone or via the service provider that can also take a long time as resources are scarce/expensive.

None of this stuff is immediate like it is on the TV. It always cracks me up when you see a TV detective randomly guessing passwords trying to 'crack' a device. In the real world that just doesn't work.

A truly important point. Thank you.

What happens next?

The prosecution finished its closing speech last week, you can see a summary here.

Today we will continue hearing closing speeches from the defence teams.

Once the defence cases have been completed, the judge will take the jury through his ‘summing up’ - a summary of the case they have heard over the last five weeks. The judge will also give any directions which may be useful for the jury.

The jury will then retire to decide its verdicts over the four defendants.

A verdict can take any length of time to reach, although the judge can intervene to direct the jury to reach a majority verdict - where all but one or two jurors agree.
