I am a bit mystified about the sighting that night which is hard to explain. If it was him then maybe he thought he would pop back to a petrol station he thought he'd seen to get some cigarettes or a drink but that seems really unlikely. Similarly in the morning he might have been popping out to get some coffee or food for his camp mates but again that seems unlikely to go on foot in such an area.

My only other thoughts are maybe he was drunk or doing some drugs or had a psychotic episode and went off in delirium. Any of these scenarios would seem to lead to an accidental fall or drowning in the loch.

The other least likely scenario is that someone did harm to him but that seems very unlikely.
It could have been him. His partner states she believes he attempted to head home that night.

I wonder why he would attempt such a journey on foot at that time of night.

The partner of a Fife man who went missing on a fishing trip with friends five weeks ago has begged anyone who may have information to come forward and end her 'torture' of waiting for news.

Reece Rodger, 28, disappeared on the evening of Saturday March 18 while camping with pals on the banks of Loch Rannoch, near Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire. He was last seen at around 11.30pm that day by friends who thought he had gone to bed, but there was no sign of the dad-of-two the next morning.

His partner Paula Airzee believes he may have been seen walking on the B846, a country road that runs alongside the loch, in the hours after he disappeared. In a heartfelt appeal, she has asked anyone who might have seen him that night, or in the early hours of the 19th, to get in touch.

Speaking to the Courier, Paula said: "All we have to cling to right now is the one potential sighting on the B846. What we understand is that a person who was travelling on that road stopped after spotting a person on that road.

“He then got out of the car to help but, by that time, the individual has unfortunately disappeared from view. The man was a male and was wearing black clothing matching what Reece was wearing that evening.

"I’m urging those people who were on that road around the potential sighting to come forward, even if it they think they saw nothing at all. It’s crucial, if nothing else, to be able to eliminate them as we continue to piece together all known movements around that time.”

had they just arrived that day, or day before? even more unusual if they had only got there a few hours before to then decide to leave again.

All we have to cling to right now is the one potential sighting on the B846.

It sounds like this is referring to the sighting at 11:30ish on the evening he was last seen. She says there's only one potential sighting so does this mean the potential sighting early the following morning has now been ruled out?

The devastated partner of missing Reece Rodger has told of the last conversation she had with him, as she revealed fresh details about his disappearance. Dad-of-two Reece, 28, was last seen by pals during a fishing trip at Loch Rannoch, Perthshire, at 11.30pm on March 18.

His partner, Paula Airzee, has said that Reece spent most of the day fishing on the north shore of the loch. He phoned his partner intermittently throughout the day, saying he was having a great time but complaining about the weather.

In a phone call made at about 4pm, he told Paula that he wanted to come home before changing his mind and saying: “I’ll be okay”. He continued to keep in touch, with the final call coming at 11.18pm and lasting just over a minute.

[...]

Something was going on I feel and he didn't want to stay there. Phoning his partner throughout the day, openly stating he wanted to come home. Then the sightings on the road which was likely him attempting to make his way home.

If the weather was so bad stick it out until the following day then maybe head home. I presume they drove there?

Why would he leave all of his stuff and then walk off in the dark in an area he didn't know very well?

I once got lost at night in the dark (and pouring rain) because I walked past the place I was staying. It was very late and they had put all the lights out and I walked past the remote camp, eventually realising I must surely have passed it. So I turned back for a bit but couldn't see it. So then I headed back in my original direction thinking I maybe hadn't passed it after all. An hour later of to-ing and fro-ing, I had no idea where I was or which direction to head in. So I can see how he could have got lost if he had walked off on his own for a bit and the others went to bed and put their torches off and the fire out if they had one. And if it was a dark night and the vehicles were parked off road. But it sounds like he hid rather than asking for help when the car passed him. If it was him. If he had just kept walking with the loch on his right he'd have reached Kinloch Rannoch in about 2-3 hours. I think he was either hit by a car or was having some kind of mental health crisis that led to some unwise decisions.

I have stayed at the Rannoch Hotel a number of times and walked and drove the road. It's not a route I would want to be on in the pitch dark in the pouring rain.

If he had been struck by a car he would have been found by now. If he somehow fell into the loch he would have had to have gone of out his way to get into it. The road passes very near the loch but not so close that he could have fallen in. There is also a beach line along most of the edge.

Fresh information from missing dad Recce Rodger's phone has revealed a new timeline for his disappearance with the 28-year-old leaving the campsite where he had been with pals a lot earlier than previously thought, his partner has said.

Paula Airzee has shared a new police development that shows that the Fife dad's phone was one hour and 20 mins east of the campsite at Loch Rannoch where he was reported missing from at 11.20pm on March 18.

The signal picked up by analysis of mobile data was in the vicinity of a potential sighting of Reece and so can now be confirmed as the 28-year-old too.

Pals believed he had gone to bed at 11.30pm but there was no sign of the dad-of-two the next morning.

But mobile data has now revealed that he was a lot further away from the campsite at 11.30pm with his new location between Learn farm and Aulich.

It all points to him attempting to get away from the campsite and head home. Why not just wait until morning. Did he try to hitch a lift? Very strange.

So according to the phone data he left the campsite about 10 and began walking towards Kinloch Rannoch. Why did his friends think he went to bed at 11.30? Why that precise time? At 11.20 was was well away from them.

Rereading through this thread, I have so many questions!
  • I did a little google map search. It looks like a road runs right beside the loch in many areas. Many areas are a combination of fields and forest, but nothing seems too far from a road.
  • Did Recce leave behind his camping gear - tent, sleeping bag?
  • Has his partner indicated why she thought he wanted to leave?
He was last seen around 11.30pm on Saturday evening and they believed he was heading to bed.
  • Was there heavy drinking around a fire at the campsite or were his mates fairly sober? If the former, it could account for the estimated time discrepancy for when they thought he went to bed.
  • Had Recce been drinking heavily or was he sober when last seen?
They are also looking into a possible sighting of Reece the following morning at around 8am on the B846 approximately one mile east of Aulich.
Was this ever confirmed? I would think that the lettering on the sleeves of his shirt would be distinctive. However, nights can't have been balmy in March. Might Recce have put on a jacket when he left the campsite?

Sergeant James Longden said: “The area where Reece was last seen is wooded and he was not familiar with the landscape

This also brings to mind,
  • Was Recce an experienced camper? Might he have gotten there and decided that "sleeping rough" was not for him and wanted to leave?
  • Did he have a good flashlight or headlamp?
  • How well did he know the people he was camping with? Longtime friends? Work friends?
  • How solid were these guys? Upstanding citizens or past criminal history?
  • At what time the next day did they report him missing?
Although Recce's phone was tracked to a location earlier than was previously thought, it doesn't mean that he was with his phone.

I do hope for his loved ones that there is some kind of resolution soon, even if it's a sad outcome.

Although Recce's phone was tracked to a location earlier than was previously thought, it doesn't mean that he was with his phone.

It was said earlier in the thread that he phoned his partner at 11:18 so he was there with the phone. The call lasted 1 minute and he turned his phone off at 11:20.

In a phone call made at about 4pm, he told Paula that he wanted to come home before changing his mind and saying: “I’ll be okay”. He continued to keep in touch, with the final call coming at 11.18pm and lasting just over a minute.

Here's her description of that call from the source quoted above:
"I last heard from Reece at 11.18pm. I was working and it was noisy. He just asked if I was ok and what was happening. I said ‘I’m fine, I’m still working’. The call lasted 1 min 4 secs. Reece’s phone went off at 11.19pm."

It seems odd that he had already been walking away from camp for about an hour at that point but didn't mention it to her?

Thanks for that clarification.

Such a bizarre situation. Again, hoping for some kind of resolution (good or sad) for all of his loved ones.

Reece Rodger phone data provides breakthrough with new timeline for missing dad

"Recce's phone appears to have been switched off before he was seen at 11.30pm by a witness with no headlight. They offered him assistance at this time he then disappeared from view."

This sound like he went off the road after the couple spoke to him. He may have gone off into the woodland for whatever reason. I wonder why they offered assistance?

"There are no sightings of Reece on any CCTV from either of the two hotels in the area."

So it seems that he did not go past the Rannoch Hotel on the road, nor did he pass through Kinloch Rannoch village.

We can presume that whatever happened, happened in the area where he was last seen/phone last pinged/went dead which was between Learn Farm and Aulich Farm/lodges.
