The court heard today that Mark Moss, who would often walk home from school with his friend Rikki, spoke to police on 1 December 1994, three days after the tragic death, telling officers that they were 'like brothers'.

Reading out an official summary of that conversation, Prosecutor John Price QC said: 'He [Mr Moss] said that Rikki told him, on he believes Friday [25 November], that he was going to run away because he hated school and didn't want to go.'

The witness, giving evidence today via video-link from Peterborough police station, could not remember any 'further detail', the court was told.

Jenni Dempster QC, defending, asked him: 'Did you ever see Ruth Neave walking Rikki to school?'

'No,' said Mr Moss.

Ms Dempster continued: 'Did you know from what you saw... whether he was ever having to run around with drugs for his mother?'

Rikki's old friend could not remember ever seeing anything himself.

Mr Moss said: 'He would sit in the bushes upset. My mum would see him shivering in the bushes and say come in. She wouldn't get involved in his mum's business.'

Friend of Rikki Neave, six, says his last words were 'Will you marry me when I'm older?' court hears | Daily Mail Online

The friend of murdered schoolboy Rikki Neave said his last words to her were: 'Will you marry me when I'm older?' and claimed his mother 'throttled him until he turned blue for talking during EastEnders', a court heard today.

Rikki, aged six, was found in woodland in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, in November 1994 after being strangled, stripped naked and left in a 'star pose'.

James Watson, who would have been 13 at the time, is now 40 and standing trial at the Old Bailey for Rikki's murder.

Watson was arrested after sophisticated technology found a 'definitive match' between his DNA profile and samples taken from Rikki's clothing after a new investigation was opened into the case in 2015.

In 1996, Rikki's mother Ruth Neave stood trial at Northampton Crown Court for his murder and was cleared by the jury.

During her trial she admitted child cruelty offences and served seven years in prison.

Donna McCormick, who was neighbour to the Neaves and would have been 12 at the time, gave evidence at Watson's trial via video link today - telling jurors Rikki had been a close friend.

She sobbed as she told the court the last words he ever spoke to her were: 'I'm going now. Will you marry me when I'm older

I know this case is unusual in that this is the second of 2 trials. I'm finding it a little frustrating to follow now; and find myself wondering which statements provided in certain years are false, and which are true. I know this is something only the jury can decide of course.

I dont necessarily know that any statements are false but....the two different trials are about different people which sometimes is hard to follow because hardly any of it has been about the actual accused and I do not understand why most of it has been about Ruth when she is not the one on trial and I do not understand why the Prosecution hasnt been any different to the defence and made that point clear tbh

I honestly do not understand this case. Considering its at the Old Bailey it just seems a big mess. It is hard to even understand who is supposedly on trial from the newspaper reports and I feel so sorry for the Jury having to sit there and listen to this for weeks now when surely they should only be hearing about the accused? Everything connected with his mother and the past tbh is irrelevant as shes not the one on trial. All I can actually remember about the actual accused is the old lady witness said she saw them that day and his mum testified that he asked her about a dead baby two days before hand and that the school teacher said he was very interested and about the dna that had been found using new technology and everything else has been about Ruth who is not on trial and was cleared of being involved in his murder.

Honestly thinking with the amount of doubt so far he will be found not guilty! Another devastating blow for poor Rikki xx

Honestly i think that also. I dont understand it feels like one big screw up. I understand Watsons lawyers trying to throw doubt out as he is their client but the Prosecution are no better. Its like they are trying to deliberately throw this case...I dont get it.

Accused killer James Watson sexually assaulted a five-year-old boy 18 months before he allegedly murdered schoolboy Rikki Neave in a wood, a court heard. James Watson, 40, is accused of strangling six-year-old Rikki in Peterborough in November 1994, stripping and posing his body in a ‘star shape’ before dumping his clothes in a wheelie bin. So is the mother of the boy that was indecently assaulted saying it was her that Watsons mother told about the phone call two days before Rikki was murdered?
