Police appeal to find soldier Ryan Rudd missing from Catterick Garrison last seen in Selby.

Police in North Yorkshire are searching for a missing soldier who failed to return to his barracks at Catterick Garrison after a night out in Selby.

Twenty-eight-year-old Ryan Rudd was last seen at the New Inn in Selby in the early hours of Sunday 15 February after going on a night out with two friends on Valentine’s Day.

He failed to return home or to his base at Catterick Garrison and since then has been out of contact with family, friends and colleagues.

North Yorkshire Police said: "We are appealing to anyone who may have seen him in Selby on 14/15 February or has seen him since then, to contact us as a matter of urgency."

Ryan is described as white, around 5ft 8in tall, of slim build with dark brown hair and was last seen he was wearing a black t-shirt, blue hooded top and black trousers.

A CCTV image has been released from the pub in Selby on the night he went missing.

ITV News contacted the Ministry of Defence for comment and an army spokesperson said: "We can confirm that Lance Corporal Ryan Rudd was reported missing to North Yorkshire Police on March 1 2026.

"An investigation is under way and we are working with North Yorkshire Police who are leading this. We are unable to offer further detail at this time."

Why did it take them so long to report him missing? Over 2 weeks!

It may have to do with him being a soldier, and that the Army first wanted to check if he might be voluntarily missing.

Article from 3 March 2026:
The 28-year-old was reported missing to North Yorkshire Police on March 1 by a senior member of the Army after he failed to return to his barracks at Catterick Garrison.

Yes I guess it could be for that reason couldn't it. It just seems like such a long time and not one person questioned why he hadn't been seen or been in touch. The wording in the first article suggests he was maybe on leave as it says he failed to return home OR to his barracks.

I checked the distance between Catterick Garrison and Selby, and takes over an hour by car, so I wonder if he lives in, or near, Selby. It's not exactly 'pop into the local pub after work' distance.

I imagine he probably does. If he was out with friends that evening, why didn't any of them question why he suddenly went off the radar when they were unable to contact him. Does he live alone? With family? A partner? Surely someone would wonder where he was even for a few days, nevermind 2 whole weeks.

If he lives alone, and don't have a partner, it might not be that surprising that friends and/or family not began missing him within a few days or even a week. I don't know what kind of schedule a Lance Corporal in the British Army has, but if he worked irregular days/weeks, then it could explain why it took some time before people noticed him being missing.

A defence source has confirmed that missing soldier LCpl Ryan Rudd was not on annual leave at the time of his disappearance more than a fortnight ago, and was expected on duty 24 hours after a fellow soldier saw the 28-year-old for the final time.

He wasn't on leave according to this article.

I wasn't talking about being on a leave, I was thinking about having a weekly/monthly schedule, that varies from week to week.
(I've worked in healthcare, and was used some weeks working several days in a row, the next just one or two days, not just me, but also my friends.)

Sorry lovely I did get what you meant. I just spotted that article and wanted to post it quickly before I left work to walk home. It was posted 2 hours ago. Going back to what we were saying about him possibly being on leave as he was out in Selby rather than local to his barracks.

I imagine he does work irregular hours and days. And like you say if he lives alone it would explain why the alarm wasn't raised by family.
