UK UK - Sophie Smith, 21, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, 26 Dec 2017

Her poor family. I hope they can at least find her body for some sort of closure.

This says the coastguard is searching the sea, helicopter searching the coast line, and tidal analysis is being done ...(in an attempt to predict where a body might come to shore, I presume).

I also read that today's public search has been called off due to bad weather conditions and concerns over searchers' safety. But it says in that article that a few people went out anyway.

Very sad, I hope Sophie will be found soon.

Thanks @covermecagney, I'm not too far away but not close enough. There's a vast search going on there, 100's of people as well as sea searches. It's looking most likely she has ended up in the sea which as we know can take some time to bring her back.

Another aspect I feel may have happened is possible terminal burrowing, she must have been shivering as it is freezing overnight and if its true she was only wearing those shorts and a vest then her core temp would be dropping pretty quick if she stayed on land, maybe hypothermia kicked in and then terminal burrowing and maybe she could be in some dense bushes ( I am thinking of the Gaia scenario ).

Its the preparation the police have stated which is very concerning amongst the illness she was suffering.

A friend works for the lifeboat crew but havent had chance to ask anything and not sure if he has been out in the search either.

There's 100's out searching today, one search from the FB group was postponed due to safety concerns but still loads of people are out looking in various areas.

So terrible. Don't see how there can be any other outcome than bad. This country has a lot of blood on its hands for cutting mental health services. There isn't sufficient help available even if you ask for it. I know myself that I have struggled my entire life and no doubt if I had been in a coastal area, I'd have gone the same way. [emoji853] My heart hurts for these young women.

I am certain I have read / heard that the police searches have been called off as there’s nowhere else to look, but can’t find a news report now... odd

I'm thinking of and praying that Sophie is safe, but I fear the worst. I too battle with poor mental health and day after day, year after year with little and for some time no support leaves very little strength to continue the fight. My heart aches for Sophie who must have hit rock bottom.

The UK's mental health so called services are a disgrace. As a nation we should be ashamed, but the government takes advantage of how the majority of people think those with poor mental health are either weak or psychopaths.

Please be safe Sophie. x

I hope for the best but fear the worst for Sophie.

On the subject of mental health, I actually think that it's less to do with a reduction in funding and more the awareness of mental health being an actual entity. Going back just 20 years people would have died and it would have been called tragic. Thankfully now we're more aware of the causes of such issues and that they can be prevented. Unfortunately that costs a lot of money and that's not money that our overstretched NHS can deal with currently.

I don't want to become political so I won't. This isn't a new problem, it's just a new focus.

I'm a member of the Facebook group and whilst the police are scaling back the search the public are still very much searching.

Missing student Sophie Smith 'left note for family'

A student who has been missing since Boxing Day left a note outlining her intention to take her own life by going into the sea, police have said.

Sophie Smith, 21, had been suffering severe anxiety and depression and had been receiving treatment for her mental health, Norfolk Police said.

The last sighting of her was on CCTV running towards the seafront in Gorleston after she left her home.

Tragic. [emoji17] Her poor friends and family and poor Sophie. I wish I could speak to her to tell her to hold on and that life is worth battling through. I hope they find her so they can lay her to rest.

How very sad.

At these temps hypothermia would have set in almost immediately, and hopefully she passed quickly.

Sophies family have asked for all searches from the public to be called off too. Sad news but I think it's safe guarding the public as well as themselves. They must want time to mourn. Can I copy something from the find sophie fb? I'm not sure on the rules regarding social media.
