@JuicyLucy, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Don't know what to say, my head just blew up!
I know. I'm wondering if LE sending the file to CPS 'for advice' is code for 'we know this isn't going anywhere but we want to look like we're trying'. I can hardly believe it, but I'm wondering if they thought it would be a kindness - that it would give SL's father a sense of closure before he died. Afaik he's hanging grimly on though, and I would have thought the sense of betrayal this creates will make things worse not better tbh.
I feel fake news is a bit of a strong term tbh, but it does seem as though Essex Police misdirected the media a bit. I'm guessing they send files to the CPS for 'early advice' all the time, and if charges don't follow then no one's any the wiser. In this particular case, it seems as though they wanted to look as though they were doing more than they actually were, while simultaneously insisting it was only 'early advice' and nothing was necessarily going to come of it. Pretty cruel really.

re: Your theory. My own theory on this case has always been that the two Js were directly involved, that MB wasn't involved in the actual crime.....but that perhaps there were other things in his closet which JK was well aware of and used as leverage to keep him on side. They must be very damaging for him to stay quiet all this time, but what's worse than a murder at your home?
As an aside, in the late 80s and early 90s he was playing venues like the Circus Tavern in Purfleet - before he made the big time. There were various things said about him, but he wasn't a star at that time and obviously no-one realised anything could end up being significant. There was quite a big drugs scene there at that time
