UK - Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight', Sept 2023 *arrests*

  • #101
Mr Graham did not attend the hearing as he was “unavoidably detained”, his barrister Christopher Knox said.

A trial has been listed for 3 December and is anticipated to last at least 10 days.

Both men are accused of criminally damaging the tree and wall on 28 September, with both sites referred to in court documents as places of "historical interest" and "natural beauty" belonging to the National Trust.

They have been released on bail.

The 38-year-old, from Carlisle, Cumbria, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing and also denied causing damage of about £1,150 to Hadrian's Wall when it was hit by the tree.
He will face a trial in December alongside fellow Cumbrian man Adam Carruthers, 31, from Wigton, who pleaded not guilty to both offences at an earlier hearing.
The trial is expected to last for at least 10 days.

The trial of two men accused of illegally chopping down the world-renowned tree at Sycamore Gap has been delayed as one of the defendants is unwell.

Hopefully the trial can get going in the new year. If the guy is young and fit enough to chop down a massive tree, hopefully he'll be fit enough to stand trial soon.

"Potential jurors in the trial of two men accused of felling the landmark tree at Sycamore Gap have been asked if they have any emotional connection to the much-loved site on Hadrian’s Wall.

Daniel Graham, 39, of Milbeck Stables, Carlisle and Adam Carruthers, 32, of Church Street, Wigton, Cumbria, are on trial at Newcastle Crown Court charged with two counts each of criminal damage.

They are jointly charged with causing criminal damage worth £622,191 to the much-photographed Northumberland tree.

They are also charged with causing £1,144 of damage to Hadrian’s Wall, a Unesco World Heritage Site, which was hit by the tree when it was felled overnight on September 28 2023."

I just can't imagine what their motive was

IMO

Stupidity doesn't need any motive.
It is senseless & dangerous.

As the saying goes:
"Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than evil."

IMO they are awful trees . Wonder if alcohol was a factor.
Maybe - but it's not like it was in a neighbours garden blocking light etc
