"The tragic end of the 'Robin Hood' tree:

Sycamore Gap tree took 100 years to grow

and fell in under 3 minutes.

The Sycamore Gap tree
was cherished for its striking silhouette set between two hills on Hadrian’s Wall,
a Roman-era fortification dating back to AD 122.

Beyond its natural beauty,
the tree was a symbol of resilience and history,
drawing thousands of visitors each year.

It became globally recognisable after its appearance in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
and was frequently featured
in photography, social media posts, and tourism campaigns.

For many,
it represented a living link between ancient history and modern culture.

A national symbol destroyed

Although not Britain’s oldest or largest tree,
the Sycamore Gap tree held deep sentimental value.

Its location on Hadrian’s Wall,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
made it a favourite spot for tourists, photographers, and locals.

Its loss is seen as a symbol of the broader challenges
involved in protecting the nation’s natural and historic landmarks."

The BBC's write up of today's proceedings. Even though Graham's car and phone were tracked to and from the site, and the video of the felling was filmed on his phone, it was apparently nothing to do with him as he was in the habit of letting people just go off with his car and phone. Riiiiight......

Plus DG made a 10 minute ‘anonymous’ call telling the police is was Carruthers that did it in August 2024. His voice was recognised and his phone had a record of calling 101 at the time of the call.

He’s really the not the smartest, is he?

And expecting the police to believe he leaves his keys and his phone in his vehicles so anyone can use them!

This is outrageous and so very disturbing. I’m guessing they thought this was their claim to fame?

On another note in the article from The Mirror what in the world is that one fellow doing with those two baby owlets? Took them from their parents? Thought that was funny too?

These two jackasses don’t deserve to be outside unsupervised.

MOO

I wonder what the punishment is for this category of crime.
These are the sentencing guidelines for criminal damage with a value of more than £5000. Given what we've heard so for, I think anyone convicted would be judged to have high culpability and have caused serious harm, so the start point would be 18 months in prison, which could be increased up to 4 years depending on aggravating and mitigating factors.

it makes me angry that they were so proud of themselves being destructive- thought it was so cool to be ... what? infamous? "bad?" And they were grown men.
One of them even has 2 kids! Imagine your dad going being in prison for your childhood because he just had to go and cut down an ancient tree for the bantz

Interesting, thanks for sharing!

I think given the huge public interest a custodial sentence is very likely here. Perhaps prison will make these two alleged man babies grow up a bit.

'tried to pin blame on his friend'.

A man accused of felling the Sycamore Gap tree
tried to ‘drop’ his co-defendant in it,
in an anonymous call to police.

Daniel Graham, 39,
spoke to police on the 101 service in August last year
and told a call handler
his co-defendant, Adam Carruthers,
was in possession of part of the tree, chainsaws and even firearms,
it is alleged.

Andrew Gurney, for Carruthers,
played the call to the jury.

The male caller,
speaking to a call-handler, said:

‘I tried to phone Cumbria Police to report some information,
they said I need to speak to Northumbria Police'.

The caller then declined to give his name or number
and when asked what the call was about replied:

‘Sycamore Gap'."
