UK - Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight', Sept 2023 *arrests*

Today's live reporting from the BBC. Neither Graham or Carruthers appartently know anything about the tree being cut down, even through Graham's car and phone were tracked to and from the site, and Carruthers was the only person sent the video of the act from Graham's phone.

it makes me angry that they were so proud of themselves being destructive- thought it was so cool to be ... what? infamous? "bad?" And they were grown men.

Indeed. I was surprised to read that they weren't 15 yr old boys. Not that 15 yr old boys often do stupid things, but that adult men are usually not involved in such wanton destruction.

Good!

Thank you Jury.

Despicable acts should never be left unpunished.

Good riddance!!!

Trial previously heard
that Carruthers might have chopped down the tree so he could present it to his newborn baby girl as a 'trophy' -
without realising the revulsion this would cause.

Another theory is that the plot to chop down the tree was hatched
as Graham was facing removal from his ramshackle home in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall -
branded a 'shanty town' by long-suffering neighbours.

Some locals in the remote rural area are convinced
that the groundworker's motive in targeting the iconic tree stems from his grievance with authority over his failure to secure planning approval
for the eyesore he created in the unspoilt landscape."

Sentencing on 15 July

published at 15:11 9 May

We are bringing our live coverage of the Sycamore Gap trial to an end.

Just to recap, Daniel Graham, 39 and Adam Carruthers, 32, both from Cumbria, have each been found guilty of two counts of criminal damage.

Jurors took five hours to reach unanimous verdicts, their decision announced on the ninth day of the trial being held in courtroom one at Newcastle Crown Court.

Both men have been remanded into custody, in part for their "own protection", ahead of sentencing, which is due to take place on 15 July.

Mrs Justice Lambert said they should be prepared for "lengthy" custodial sentences.

Thanks for joining us and hopefully we will see you in July.

Anyone got any guesses as to what they'll get?

I'm thinking around 3 years. Depends on any previous, I guess?

Alan Robertshaw who runs the Art of Law channel is saying about 2 years.

Whatever sentence they will get,
their future is ruined IMO.

They will have criminal record.
What employer will risk hiring them?

Only basic jobs not wanted by anyone to choose from.
Will they even be allowed to carry a chainsaw I wonder 🤔

I doubt it will worry them too much as they seem like a couple of losers in any event.

Not really much to stop them possessing a chainsaw - unless the judge has scope to order that as part of the sentence.
