It's a really sad story. I hope the man pulls through ok, I think I read he has a daughter at university too, this must be devastating for her.

Literally just up the road from myself - everyone is very shocked. Word on the street is that the lad who has been charged had been staying with the family since before Christmas - he was homeless at the times

Was he a drug addict, or did he have mental health issues?

This is a heartbreaking case. The Wilkinsons sound like genuinely good people who did everything they could to help Barley when he was homeless, and this is how he repaid them. A more in-depth story on the BBC's site doesn't really offer any motives, but does reveal some disturbing details about his background and his behaviour before the killings:
