"A young girl was raped and abused by three generations of her own family from the age of six
while her mother did nothing to stop it,
a court has heard.

The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons,
was sexually abused and assaulted
by her grandfather, father and two brothers,
a jury was told.

The mother was told about the rapes and sexual assaults
but beat her daughter, gagging and tying her up before locking her in a cupboard,
rather than trying to stop the abuse.

The abuse began when the girl was just six years old
and carried on until she was 12.

The child was beaten, burnt, raped and neglected by three generations of her own family,
Jennifer Knight KC
told a jury at Lewes Crown Court."

The girl, who has been in foster care since January when her family were arrested, first revealed the horrors when she told a teacher she was too scared to go home, Ms Knight said.

Six family members sat together in the dock as they were charged with 41 counts of raping a child, sexual assaults, actual bodily harm, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. They denied the charges.

The girl detailed horrific physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her family in a video recorded statement lasting three hours.

"The mental abuse did not stop following their arrests,
with family members contacting the girl pressuring her to change her story.

Her younger sister also faced physical abuse at the family home in West Sussex.

After more than 20 hours,
a jury in Hove agreed the family had caused years of suffering to the girl who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

And now
her grandfather, father, mother, two brothers and an uncle
face lengthy jail sentences."

Absolutely horrendous what they all did to this precious little girl.

And her mother was the one who was supposed to love, nurture and treasure her, yet she let her daughter down too.

It's as if they treated her like an object, for their personal use. Not as a human being.

I hope they all get a very lengthy prison sentence, and a very hard time in prison.
