Unlisted Missing and Unidentified Persons Research

Larson’s parents reported him missing two days later, after his abandoned vehicle was discovered by a conservation officer at the Porkies
This makes me think a case exists somewhere, even if he's not in NAMUS.
Yes, I contacted Madison Police this morning, they said I need to ask records, UW pd might have it, or the Michigan police might have it. So I'll be working on finding the case number to submit him to NaMus

I have entered many doe network cases recently, including ones in NaMus but not on doe. Today I added 5 NaMus cases with missing persons report numbers. If you have open records in your state, you might be able to email your records handler of the local department and have them give you a list of open missing people cases and case numbers. I feel so empowered by this, like I might actually help.

Pretty sure this doe is still unidentified and not in namus
This is literally where I grew up and I have no recollection of this… I double checked on doe network and he’s not on there either. You could email Melville pd and ask them if the case is open, whether they will put in on NaMus

I'm wondering if case #99, N P, could be a match to this Doe of Yugoslavian ancestry found on long island.

Not a bad idea

Let me know if I'm posting this incorrectly. MP was reported missing in 1941, body still not found by 1945 according to newspaper articles.

D.L.C: July 6, 1941
Location: Phippsburg, Routt County, Colorado
Age: 28
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 89 lbs
Clothing: Rose colored, knee length coat (allegedly)
Circumstances: MP was allegedly killed by being strangled to death by her husband at their home in Phippsburg, Colorado after a domestic dispute. Her body wrapped in a blanket, weighted down, and dumped in the Colorado river off a bridge west of Fruita.

Here's another Jane Doe I can't find a resolution for:

Date Found: November 19, 1961
Location: Stratford, Kings County, California
PMI: 9 months - 1 1/2 years
Race: Caucasian
Age: 50 years
Height: Under 5ft
Weight: 90-100 pounds
Hair: Dark hair with slight gray
Clothing: Dress, sweatshirt, knitted slippers, socks, and underclothing
Deformities: Scoliosis, would have walked with a gait, curvature was severe enough where she may have not been able to walk at all. May have used wheelchair or cutches.
Accessories: Army-type blanket

Circumstances: On November 19, 1961 the mummified body of a middle-age woman was found by a hunter. The location was 5 1/2 miles south of Stratford on the east side of the Kings River. The body was found pinned and wrapped in an army-type blanket. She was found fully clothed, with her clothing indicating her may have been middle or lower class. Law enforcement theorized she may have been from a farm labor family. Pathologists determined that the woman likely died of natural causes and that her family may have not been able to afford to bury her. X-rays and finger prints were able to be lifted from the body due to its mummified state. She was eventually re-buried in Lemoore cemetery under the name Jane Doe.

Her find a grave is here, not sure when she was buried but I'm guessing they were unable to make a positive identification.

Hello. I would really like to start a discussion with others about which states have NAMUS laws.. (even if I’m the only one posting, ha!)

I’m currently working on pushing for some changes in Indiana and have an upcoming meeting with [someone] to discuss this further. One of the changes I’d like to see implemented is making NAMUS reporting mandatory in Indiana after X amount of days of someone being missing.

Why?

As of February 24, 2025, there are 827 missing persons in the Indiana Missing Persons spreadsheet (not including any missing persons from 2025). However, only 239 missing persons are currently listed on NamUs. This discrepancy highlights the need for mandatory reporting to NamUs to ensure comprehensive tracking and increased case resolutions.

As of 2021, NAMUS stated that,

“At present, sixteen states have passed legislation mandating the use of NamUs for missing and/or unidentified persons cases.
Those states are:

(I have added / am in the process of adding hyperlinks to statutes for each state)

I’d love to hear from others—
Does your state have NAMUS laws? Have you seen changes where you live after these laws were enacted? If your state is not listed, do you have a resource similar to the Indiana Missing Persons Spreadsheet? If so, what’s the discrepancy (if any) between NAMUS & that resource?

Let’s compare and discuss the varying laws across states!
Who knows, we may be able to make a difference ! 🥺💜🙏
(Helping 1 victim, or 1 family would make it all worth it, imo)

You're welcome and thank you for starting this thread. I plan to contribute when time allows (does it ever 🙄 ). I think CT, IL, NC and TN have some laws too, they are among the most active states on NamUs.
