This was a huge compound. There were several buildings. You can see on some footage that the fire engulfed only portions.
.

I wouldn't call it "huge", and the continued use of the term "compound" in the reports is rather misleading. It is a house, a typical good-sized suburban home, but nothing especially noteworthy. It is about the same size as most of the other houses in the general neighborhood (as seen on Google Earth). Multi-generational extended family households are the norm in the Middle East and so houses tend to be big. The use of a walled enclosure is also very typical in the Middle East and reflects a very long tradition of domestic architecture in the region using an enclosure wall to separate the home and private garden from the dust and noise of the streets. The homes tend to be built with cement block and tiles -- no wood frame or floors, no wall-to-wall carpeting -- and so are less prone to catastrophic burning. Obviously a large explosion will do serious damage but the helicopter was exploded away from the house.

I have not seen the animated reenactment yet. Does someone have a link?

Edited to add: I don't know how that thumbs down symbol got up there. I must have clicked on it by accident but cannot remove it now. It was not intended as a commentary

I'm sure the Seals had to engage in a firefight before they even got to where osama was holed up using his family as human shields. They stormed the compound and fought their way to osama's hidey hole.

Maybe, but that is NOT the animation they are showing on TV. MSNBC just showed it again: blue dots (representing Navy seals) circle one building on both sides and meet four yellow dots plus one red dot (representing OBL and company) on the opposite side (but still out-of-doors).

A fire fight ensues and OBL is shot and killed, along with all but one of the yellow dots.

NONE of this takes place indoors; none of it would leave blood on a bedroom floor. The Seals then spent 40 minutes on the property searching the buildings, but if they shot anyone during that time, it hasn't been reported.

I do not celebrate the death of a man (or a monster). But I do celebrate-I celebrate the end of an evil, corrosive force, that recruited and taught that evil to others. I celebrate that this particular evil is gone, never to harm anyone again. I celebrate the closure, for the families of the 9/11 victims. I celebrate that the fear our young people lived with, the fear of another large scale attack in the US by this evil, have been laid to rest. I celebrate that justice is done. And I celebrate the celebrations, seeing America come together in pride for it's nation-college students, firefighters, police, and working and non working citizens..embracing, hugging, and some of the largest peaceful gatherings this nation has seen in a long time,. I celebrate our pride in our military, and our love for the USA. So, yes, while I am excited and can 'dance'--it isn't because of the death of a man, it is what the death of that man means--it is what our Eagle stands for-JUSTICE. And quite simply, I am thrilled.

The animation on CNN was different. It showed 2 helicopters hoovering on each side of the house. Seals fast roping down, gunfire inside house, and then one helicopter either exploding or on fire. 4 Seals carrying Bin Laden's body to the helicopter.

My friend on FB: Twitter announces that the death of Osama bin Laden has surpassed Charlie Sheen as the most tweeted topic.

My husband: Wait a minute, wasn't Charlie Sheen in "Navy Seals?" WINNING!!!

:woohoo:

The animation I'm talking about seems to be NBC's cartoon of choice:

(It appears about halfway through that report.)

I was wrong, BTW, OBL is represented by a yellow dot and his companions are in orange. But all the fighting clearly takes place outside.

This strikes me as a huge discrepancy between accounts.

The "compound" in this animation does not match at all with the photos and drawings of the house that I am seeing in other news reports. I found a website which describes the evolving information about the location identification. Scroll down to the last photos which supposedly are of the confirmed locations which is a suburban house with some outbuildings.

Let's be clear on this: OBAMA did NOT kill Bin Laden. An American soldier, who Obama just a few weeks ago was debating on whether or not to PAY, did. Obama just happened to be the one in office when our soldiers finally found Osama Bin Laden and took him out. This is NOT an Obama victory, but an AMERICAN victory!!

Maybe this has already been discussed - sorry if it has - but what happened to the bodies of the other 4 who were killed: wife, two men, son? One would suppose there were guards at the compound. What happened to them?

You are absolutely right, nachomama. The brave Navy Seals killed Bin Laden, under the direct command of President Obama. I am pretty sure I heard Obama give credit to those Seals in his speech.

At least we do not have another false "Mission Accomplished" declaration like the one exactly 8 years ago. Bush wasn't even looking in the right country!

Congratulations! You are even less gracious than Rush Limbaugh.

Barack Obama was never debating whether to pay American soldiers. In fact and much to my chagrin, his proposed budget raises the military budget considerably.

If the Attabad mission had failed, you would have been the first one here to blame Barack Obama for his incompetence. So he did that much at least: he took the risk of being blamed for a mission failure.

Seems like you could give him his one day in return.

BTW, one report I heard on TV today said the names of the actual Seals and CIA agents involved will not be released for fear they would immediately become targets for terrorists. I trust those brave men know they have our gratitude, even if we don't have their names.

You are right. NBC needs to retire that cartoon: for one thing, it shows a rectangular compound instead of the triangular property shown in the photos. It also shows a property with no second set of walls within the outer walls, obstructions that would have at least slowed entering Seals.

Oddly, the NBC website shows the CIA-issued map, a map that renders impossible the raid as shown by NBC's cartoon.

Which I was pleased to see, Mr. President made sure to reflect in his statement the other night. He emphasized several times during his speech that this has been the culmination of much dedicated work spanning several presidents' terms over the course of ten years.

This whole thing is absolutely rife with conspiracy.

John Brennan, a chief counterterrorism adviser:

(snip)Brennan, who has spent 15 years trying to hunt down the notorious fugitive, reveled in the successful mission

(snip)The President himself deserves enormous credit for giving the final green light to the nighttime raid, Brennan said, calling the decision one of the "gutsiest calls of any president in recent history."

There was an increasing confidence within the CIA that the bin Laden was living in the compound, but up until the last minute, U.S. officials could not be 100 percent certain, and there were members of the President's national security team who disagreed with the decision to order the raid, Brennan said.

"There was nothing to confirm that bin Laden was at the compound - the President had to evaluate the situation," Brennan said.

buffetoflies, I am not clear on exactly what the conspiracy is?

FINALLY! Chris Matthews of MSNBC is now reporting that the landing Seals killed two guards on the grounds, then searched the main house, room by room, until they found Bin Laden and another man (presumably the son) holding a woman as a shield in a third-floor bedroom. All three were killed there.

I just hope they get part of the bounty
