Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander James Stavridis told an audience Thursday evening at Augustana University that the war with Iran is “not going well” strategically, and America’s leaders are stretched too thin with conflicts around the globe.

Stavridis said, the Trump administration has created a “bandwidth” problem for the few people President Donald Trump has entrusted to handle each situation.

“It’s too much, and they don’t have the professional support that they need,” Stavridis said.

Stavridis was the longest-serving combatant commander in recent U.S. history. He is a retired four-star U.S. Navy admiral who oversaw operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, the Balkans and counter-piracy efforts off the coast of Africa. He also led operations across Latin America.

Iran says strikes contradict Trump's 'extended deadline for diplomacy'

Iran's foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi says that Israel "has hit 2 of Iran's largest steel factories, a power plant and civilian nuclear sites among other infrastructure".

In a message shared on X, he says that "Israel claims it acted in coordination with the U.S." and the attack "contradicts POTUS extended deadline for diplomacy".

Iran will "exact HEAVY price," he adds.

It comes less than 24 hours after US President Donald Trump said he would pause any attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure for a further 10 days.

It comes as the Israeli military says it has struck the Arak heavy water plant in central Iran.

Iran’s security forces are recruiting children as young as 12 to man checkpoints in Tehran and perform other duties during the war, an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps official told state TV on Thursday.
...
“Considering the ages of those requesting to join, we have now lowered the minimum age to 12 years old, because children aged 12–13 want to be involved.”

The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the missile attack on Israel in a statement aired on television.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, a military spokesman for the Houthis, issued the claim in a statement aired Saturday morning by the group's Al-Masirah satellite television.

Saree said they fired a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting what he described as "sensitive Israeli military sites" in southern Israel.

The entrance of the Houthis into the war also called into question whether the rebels will again target commercial shipping travelling through the Red Sea corridor, further disrupting global shipping.

The Houthi rebels attacked over 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two vessels and killing four sailors, from November 2023 until January 2025.

An Iranian missile attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Friday injured 10 U.S. service members, according to multiple outlets.

Two of the service members were seriously injured, a U.S. official familiar with the incident told The Associated Press. The missile damaged several U.S. refueling craft and several unmanned aerial vehicles, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials.

Iran conflict enters a fifth week as tensions escalate in the region
The incident marks the second successful attack on the base this month as Iran strikes back at a joint U.S.-Israeli assault. A previous attack on March 1 killed 26-year-old Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington. He is one of 13 service members who have been killed since the start of “Operation Epic Fury.” Six were killed in an office space in Kuwait, while another six died in a refueling plane crash.

Over 300 service members have been injured in the conflict, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) told The Hill earlier on Friday. Ten remain seriously wounded while 273 have returned to duty.

Ships from several countries safely travel through Strait of Hormuz.

"The Indonesian government has held "positive talks" with Iran to enable the safe passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
...

Thailand has reached an agreement with Iran to allow ships to sail safely through the Strait of Hormuz. The Thai Prime Minister announced this.

"An agreement has now been reached to allow Thai oil tankers to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz, thereby reducing concerns about the supply of fuel to Thailand," said Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during a press conference."

"Aside from Iranian ships, the bulk of the ships that have been getting through are linked to Pakistan, China and India, Schroden said.

This suggests Iran "seems to have drawn a sort of clear line" between ships from countries tied to its aggressors and the ships that aren't."

A gas tax holiday is a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax, currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel fuel. That does not include state taxes, which often are higher.

The tax provides more than $23 billion per year in revenue for federal highway and public transit programs.

The president cannot suspend the federal tax on his own. Congress would have to approve the move.

Both the House and Senate are controlled by Republicans, and bills on the issue are unlikely to advance unless Trump signals his support.

Suspending the tax could provide some relief

Rising gas prices are putting renewed pressure on household finances, especially for low- and middle-income Americans who have less flexibility to absorb higher transportation costs. The increases can influence how much people drive, where they travel and how they spend money on other things.

“Trump’s war of choice with Iran is driving up gas prices across the country — and Americans shouldn’t have to bear the additional economic burden of Trump’s reckless decision making,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat who co-sponsored the Gas Prices Relief Act with fellow Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona.

The bill would suspend the tax through Oct. 1. A similar measure was sponsored in the House by Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas of New Hampshire.

During a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pezeshkian "thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts to put an end to the aggression against the Islamic Republic," according to a statement from the Iranian presidency.

The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey met in Islamabad (Pakistan) on Sunday and Monday for discussions on the war in the Middle East."

The Plan

"The war against Iran began for the US and Israel with clear objectives. For Israel, all Iranian building blocks that could lead to a nuclear weapon had to be destroyed, top figures of the regime had to be eliminated.

Soon, the Iranian population would take to the streets “and finish the job.” A new pro-Western and democratic Iran would rise. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu can launch his election campaign in the autumn with the achievement that he, and he alone, has defeated Israel’s arch-enemy Iran.

A quick victory would also reflect well on the American president, who would immediately gain control over Iranian oil and gas production currently flowing towards challenger China. It would be a quick, clean war. It was not.
...

Who are the losers
?

The Iranian citizens. After enduring a harsh and repressive regime for decades, Iranian cities and infrastructure are being destroyed, the Iranian population is further impoverished.
...

The greatest pressure to end the war now rests with US President, who is being held accountable both within the US and abroad for the reckless and seemingly hopeless conflict. President Trump promised his voters to halve the price at the pump; since the conflict, prices in the US have risen by 50 percent.
...

Iranian diplomats are known as tough and shrewd negotiators who demand detailed and comprehensive agreements. The prevailing approach of American negotiators is the opposite: they work with a (quick) political agreement that their president can boast about. That is not going to work."
