US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

<Modsnip: Politicization>

"Prime Minister Starmer has spared no effort over the past year to appease Trump, hoping to secure a favorable trade deal and keep the Americans on board regarding the war in Ukraine. Flattery was London's primary tool, as seen during Trump's state visit to the UK with all the bells and whistles.

Starmer avoided confrontation with the White House as much as possible, but now we're seeing—very cautiously—a shift. The words we heard from Starmer today were his strongest criticism of the US government yet."

I’m genuinely curious. Trump has cited Russia and China as the main reason that owning Greenland is strategically important for the US, but he also invited Putin to join his Board of Peace. How do those two positions fit together from your perspective?

The US government has admitted that it made the following mistake:

"Hendrik Vos: "According to British media, Trump may have simply made a mistake"

According to professor of international politics Hendrik Vos, Trump may simply have been mistaken about why some European countries sent troops to Greenland.

"Trump reportedly admitted to Starmer (British Prime Minister) that it was a misunderstanding and that he had been misinformed," Vos says. British broadcaster Sky News reported this, citing its own sources.

In his Saturday Truth Social post announcing the tariff threat, Trump added that European troops had been deployed "for unknown reasons."

He named the countries that had deployed military personnel for the retaliatory measures in the form of import tariffs.

Starmer tried to convince Trump, according to Sky News, that the military deployment is intended to safeguard US security interests, and not to counter American interests.

"Trump is said to have admitted he was mistaken about the motivation behind the European troop deployment"

The US government feels no obligation to work solely for peace, which opens the door to control Greenland.

"Although Trump has spoken repeatedly about his desire to "get his hands on" Greenland, concerns about it have grown in recent weeks. Trump has not ruled out military intervention in Greenland.

Trump is linking his threats to not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. In a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Støre, he wrote that he no longer "feels obligated to work solely for peace."

Now, Trump says, he can better focus on "what's good for the US." That, in his view, includes control over Greenland."

Seriously?! Omg, I just am astounded by this 'misunderstanding.!' I see that the UK PM is doing his utmost to excuse Trump. I just don't buy it. IMO.

I think the mistake relates to links posted yesterday. The US claimed that they had no knowledge of the Arctic security exercises in and around Greenland yesterday, but the EU said that the US was aware of the plan. Because the US said it knew nothing about the exercises, the US imposed 10% tariffs on EU countries as retaliation.

I think that was the mistake - a misunderstanding about the reason for the Arctic exercises. If that was a misunderstanding, then the 10% tariff threat is gone.

Ok, you would think since the US leadership is so up in the arms about security issues, that they would know exactly what is going on and why in Greenland by troops. I still don't necessarily buy that they had a misunderstanding, but we will see if the tariff threat is removed. ;) HOWEVER, I DO see that Trump himself could have misinterpreted the security exercises, so .... IMO

In my opinion, people born in 2001 cannot makes sense of this 79 year old man.

"President Trump is now claiming that one reason he is pushing to acquire Greenland is that he didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize, according to a text message he sent to Norway’s prime minister over the weekend."

It does not sound like the tariff will be lifted.

The US president is using the tactic of attacking/harming any country that does not do he wants. Every country that does what he wants will be rewarded.

All countries have to stand united against the US to stop the United States from forcing sovereign nations to become part of the united states.

Gift article

"The three highest-ranking Roman Catholic clerics who lead archdioceses in the United States said in a strongly worded statement on Monday that America’s “moral role in confronting evil around the world” is in question for the first time in decades.
Citing recent events in Venezuela, Ukraine and Greenland as having raised fundamental questions about the use of military force, the cardinals call for a “genuinely moral foreign policy” in which “military action must be seen only as a last resort in extreme situations, not a normal instrument of national policy.”

"Trump on Greenland: "We have to have this, Europe won't put up too much of an objection"

US President Donald Trump doesn't expect "too much resistance" from European leaders regarding Greenland, he told reporters before boarding Air Force One for Washington.

"Look, we have to have this. And they want this over and done with. They can't protect it. Denmark, they're wonderful people, and I know the leaders, they're very good people. But they don't even go there. And just because a boat went there and left 500 years ago, doesn't mean it's your property."

Watching Mike Johnson embarrass himself in the UK Parliament right now. He's actually lecturing Parliament over international threats to justify taking over Greenland. He has no self awareness at all. Lecturing the UK over threats? Seriously?

ETA now talking ironically about morality and principle, free speech and self-determination. Really. Oh, this is not going down well. His tone is so condescending. It's shocking frankly.

The President is showing the world “the U.S. is back,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC, as tensions rise over the president’s bid to acquire Greenland

Bessent said U.S. control of Greenland was “important,” adding: “That will stop any kind of a kinetic war, so why not pre-empt the problem before it starts?”

Bessent told CNBC that European countries should contribute their “fair share” towards defense. “While the Europeans have been building schools, having healthcare, we have been defending the world,” he said.

This evening I actually saw (on TV of course) Norway's PM speaking about this misconception of DT's - that the Norwegian government is to blame for him not getting it. The PM was talking privately I think, certainly not to the press. His voice was very quiet and emphatic, this is how I recall it: "I have explained and explained to him, but he will not see it, he will not listen. Over and over I have said it, again and again, that it is a committee, not the country. But he will not understand, he just will not."

Now this is not word for word by any means, I am just trying to give the gist of it, and what I think was the exasperation of the PM. IMO
