Trump at Davos

Or, was it that Saudi plane? 🤔
That one isn't ready yet, apparently. (I looked into this last night, but don't have a source handy, so IMO.)

Trump: I'm seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland This would greatly enhance the security of the NATO alliance. The US is treated very unfairly by NATO. We give so much and we get so little in return.

For any WSers living outside of the U.S....what do you think of us? Has your opinion of us sagged? Or has it always been low? I can't imagine there's a lot of positive vibes for Americans through all of this...

It's complicated.
Has your opinion of us sagged?
Yes.
Or has it always been low?
No.
I can't imagine there's a lot of positive vibes for Americans through all of this...
The administration is not the people but to be honest USA 2026 is not a good look on you. You're still always welcome to visit us (I'm in Ireland) but we won't be travelling to the US again until after 2028 at the earliest.

Well, since you're kind enough to ask...

I am British, living in England, and I try hard not to blame Americans in general for the current administration, Trump, Vance and Miller in particular. Many of us here cringed at having Boris Johnson as PM, but Trump is way beyond that. I found myself feeling much in sympathy with the Danish/Greenlandic 'Make America Go Away' caps.

The insults to Denmark in particular have made my blood boil, as my brother is married to a Dane and lives there with his family. I wonder if most Americans know how many lies have been told about that country, which suffered more casualties supporting the USA after 9/11 than any other country except the UK. That was the only time Article 5 of the NATO treaty has ever been invoked. But then again - my blood boils at his constant enabling of Putin over Ukraine.

I think most people here have enough sense not to blame all Americans for Trump but find it hard to credit how a country with so many outstanding people ended up electing him. I grew up in the post-war era of international reconstruction and optimism and the way the USA has turned fills me with fear for the future for younger people.

Why he needs Greenland for the energy reserves and to change regulations:
"Environmentally they don't let them drill"

He continues his diatribe against wind
"Every time it goes round they lose $1000"
"I haven't been able to find any wind farms in China ... they use a thing called coal mostly"

Listening to this BS speech makes me sick. Greenland is sovereign territory. Everything about my upbringing supports them against the US.

I'm a US citizen living in the UK. I will never again live in the US.

The descent into fascism makes my blood boil. I'm sick and disgusted. I keep my head down and don't advertise where I'm from. Being mistaken for Canadian is 👍 I hope for a course correction, but I'm too old to ever see it. I had to decide where my red line was. I'm embarrassed it didn't come earlier frankly, but when it was time, it was time. I keep thinking about my ancestors who made the reverse trip from Britain to America - what was their red line? The Mayflower returns - I left the US and have no regrets.

Once again his comments today are deeply disrespectful to American allies and NATO partners.

Does he really believe what he is saying? Is he trying to rewrite history.

World War 2 was won by joint forces not just America.

NATO allies sacrificed service personal to protect America after 9/11 (The only time NATO has had to act!) yet once again ignored by Trump it’s damn right disrespectful to all those service personal from other countries who lost lives / were injured in this conflict.

Greenland was not given to America during the war - Denmark ALLOWED USA to build bases their for security purposes.

snipped

And still allows! Issues about the bases could be negotiated without USA taking "the piece of ice" as he refers to Greenland.

There was a lot in that speech that wasn't about Greenland that was shocking, tbh. But trying to stick to Greenland issues for the sake of the thread.

European Parliament suspending work on EU-US trade deal

The European Parliament has said it has decided to suspend its work on a trade deal between the 27-member bloc and the United States, a parliament member said, following Mr Trump's repeated requests to take control over Greenland.

The EU assembly ‍has been debating legislative proposals to remove many EU import duties on US goods, a key part of the agreement struck in Turnberry, Scotland, at the end of July, as well as to continue zero duties for US lobsters, initially agreed with Mr Trump in 2020.

The proposals require approval by the parliament and EU governments.

Many politicians have complained that the trade deal is lopsided, with the EU required to cut most import duties while the US sticks to a broad rate of 15%.

However, they had previously appeared willing to accept it, albeit with conditions, such as an 18-month sunset clause and measures to respond to possible surges of US imports.

The trade committee of the European ‍Parliament was due to set its position in votes on 26-27 January.

However, this has now been postponed.

The chair of ‍the committee, Bernd Lange, told a news conference that the new tariff threats had broken the Turnberry deal, saying it would now be put on hold until further notice.

However, freezing the deal risks angering Mr Trump, which could lead to higher US tariffs.

The Trump administration has ‍also ruled out any concessions, such as cutting tariffs on spirits or steel, until the deal is in place.

Continuing his defense for wanting to take over Greenland:

"After the war, which we won, we won it big. Without us, right now, you‘d all be speaking German and a little Japanese, perhaps. "

Does this idiot not realize he is currently in a German speaking country? My god.

“People thought I would use force. I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force,” Trump said during his address at the World Economic Forum, walking back his previous statements leaving open the possibility of using the military to take over Greenland.....

Trump reiterated his stance that the U.S. is the only country equipped to defend Greenland from what he says are growing threats from adversaries: “We’re a great power, much greater than people understand, I think they found that out two weeks ago in Venezuela,” Trump said, referring to the U.S. capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

That's a shame if you feel you have to keep your head down. I'd hope most people here in the UK realise not all Americans support what's going on.

They do.

IMHO - they fail to use it and they should learn. Building casinos is not a way out, if you think of it.

US history with the natives has been “not easy”, but every country has done the same with own natives! Rinse, repeat. But still some have better results than others.

So I always felt that our natives could use better elders, and demand more. They are different as tribes but they could view themselves as a group. But I never lived there and suspect that what I see is the result of “indigenous PTSD” that has never been dealt with.

The human part of the situation with the Greenlanders concerns me most.

For example: if a group with another native language is adopted, how is the language treated? It is not an Indo-European language, but it is alive and an official language of Greenland. Much has been done to preserve Kalaallisut.

Do we recognize it as a second official state language, as New Zealand treats Māori? Or what?

You take a tiny, but self-governing entity, because of its minerals and whatever. But you can’t pretend that the entity doesn’t exist.

No, seriously, think of this. They speak mother tongue and as I suspect, many speak Danish. If they need treatment they use own doctors or go to Denmark, right.

Now what will happen if they need medical help and need to go to “the continent”? How do they express themselves?
Denmark and Greenland have responded to the issue with the statement that, in 2026, we can trade with people, we cannot trade people.

What the US is proposing today is to trade people. That is, the US is proposing that the people of Greenland and their homes, property, lifestyles will be traded to the United States in exchange for money.

People in the US need to wake up and ask themselves - is it okay for their government to trade them, or give them, to China in exchange for money? That is exactly what their government is demanding from Greenlanders - that they be sold to the US.

We with any level of an IQ, moral compass and so on are DISGUSTED. He does NOT represent us at all. Yes, there are the low thinking, greedy and selfish among us everywhere, those are the ones that like to align themselves with him, the haters of anyone not 'like them'. Fear and insecure due to their willful and or inborn ignorance as a human being. Those kind of people exist all over the world. IMO

"Greenland is not for sale" has deep meaning.

People in Greenland don't own the land. They lease it. Greenlanders adhere to the concept that nobody can own land.

In Greenland, all land belongs to the people and is managed by the public authorities, preventing private land ownership....The land ownership law in Greenland is driven by a philosophy. Greenlanders believe that land is a shared resource and not something that should be owned by individuals. They believe all land belongs to people, collectively.

It's a concept the president could never understand. imo
