Using "Ancestry" Databases

I would like to search for a UID based on initials found on their clothes. I've got an E, an L and a T and a projected birth year and birth place. But everytime I plug E and T into the database along with the city and year it comes up with completely unrelated stuff -- Like "Mary Jones in Cincinnati OH"... help? :)
