The funeral for two young West Point brothers stabbed to death in their home May 22 week was held Monday. Hundreds of people attended the services for 10-year-old Alex and 4-year-old Benjie Vidinhar at the Washington Heights Baptist Church in Ogden.

The family asked that people who are attending to dress comfortably and to wear children-themed T-shirts, which many did.

Is it me or does the UK have different standards of reporting than the US? Typically, we would see the word "allegedly" or make a statement with the qualifier: "according to police." Shouldn't the boy have the same courtesy as an adult, as he hasn't been tried and convicted yet.

I guess so, because of our ' innocent until proven guilty' premise.

This line was interesting:

Police say they have a motive for the killings, though they have not revealed it to the public.

I always thought this was odd to say:

“He had been interviewed by one of our detectives, and there has been things that have been brought forth that is part of an active investigation, and as time goes on, it will be released as to why he did what he did,” Richardson said.

“I don’t want to speculate what was going through his mind, but he is a natural child of the family and the two children who were victims in this were both adopted,” the sheriff added.

If he didn't want to speculate, why did he just do so?

Was he implying that he 'didn't love them' because they were not his 'natural' siblings?

I have always HATED that term, 'natural child'---as if adopted kids were unnatural?

A 15-year-old boy arrested for investigation of murdering his two younger brothers will remain in custody at the request of his attorneys.

At a weekly review of the boy's custody status Friday, defense attorney Todd Utzinger said a juvenile court judge granted his request that the boy stay in custody at Farmington Bay Youth Detention Center to allow additional time for prosecutors to file criminal charges.

"The judge extended the timeline for the county to file charges another two weeks," Utzinger said. "I think the county has tentatively reached a conclusion about what they want to do, but they agreed to give us some additional time to provide input before they make that final decision."

A 15-year-old boy accused of killing his two younger brothers was charged Thursday with two counts of murder.

In conjunction with the charges filed in 2nd District Juvenile Court, Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings also filed a motion Thursday to have the teen certified to stand trial as an adult.

--------------------------

"Neither of these alternatives is attractive," Rawlings said of the case. "Based on the evidence as we know it … it is our view that concern for public safety is paramount," he said, explaining that is why he is seeking to have the teen certified as an adult.

Sad. Senseless. I feel the most sorrow for the two little boys - their childhood, their futures were stolen from them by somewone they knew. What caused all of this is yet to be seen, but I simply cannot understand how a fifteen-year-old can take a knife and stab another much smaller child. What happened to the sense of shock he should have felt over what he was doing, how could he go on with the blood, the screams. I am so sick of these tragedies. When will this madness stop.

Once she does, there will be a second hearing on whether the case will proceed in juvenile or adult court.
Prosecutors have already filed a motion seeking to have the teen stand trial as an adult.

At a hearing Tuesday, the teen was advised of the charges against him and a preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 27.

-----------------------

The teenager was flanked by his father and defense attorneys Tuesday. Attorney Todd Sessions said his client would waive his rights on both the timeliness of the preliminary hearing and a trial.

Judge bars statements teen made after brothers found stabbed

--------------------

Attorneys on both sides of the case stipulated to the decision, agreeing that the West Point teenager's statements were made in violation of his constitutional Miranda rights.
--------------------------

The judge noted that there is one exception to the stipulation, which is that if the teenager testifies in court and makes contradictory statements, the suppressed interview could be used to impeach him. He told the judge he also understood this portion of the agreement.

--------------------------

"As the stipulation indicated, (the teenager) twice expressly refused to waive his rights and several times expressly invoked his right to remain silent, and despite that they continued to question him until he finally succumbed to their request to make a statement,"
he said.

His client also told detectives he didn't want to answer any questions, indicated he wanted to sleep and had to be woken up twice during the interrogation. This despite the presence of multiple detectives,
Utzinger said.

I know the 2 younger boys were adopted, does anyone know if the 15 yr old was adopted or is he their biological son? I also wonder if the parents knew before this happen about any emotional issues or metal issues prior to the murders. TIA

  • #119
If I remember correctly there is 2 boys (including the suspect) that are biological.
Alex (10, murdered) was adopted at birth.
Benjie (4, murdered) was more recently adopted with his two younger sisters.

So 6 kids total, 4 adopted and 2 biological.
Hopefully I got that right and it makes sense.

I seem to recall there were some indication of some issues, but nothing to this magnitude.
