Man charged with murder of Salt Lake City girl to face death penalty | Gephardt Daily

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 14, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — State prosecutors have filed a letter of intent to seek the death penalty for suspect Shaun French, 26, charged in the brutal murder of 15-year-old Baleigh Bagshaw.

The letter of intent was filed late last week.

Unfortunately, no court date stated in the article...
Why seeking the death penalty? Utah doesn't use the capital punishment...
Only 7 executions since 1976, the last one in 2010

8/13/19 Update: Third District Judge Royal Hansen ruled Tuesday there is enough evidence for French to be tried on a charge of aggravated murder. Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will seek the death penalty. Plead not guilty. He is due back in court Oct. 21.

11/8/19 Update: State prosecutors have filed a letter of intent to seek the death penalty. Defense files motion for gag order on case. Next court hearing is 11/18. 11/18/19 Update: Next hearing on 12/10/19.
12/10/19 Update: Judge Paul Parker denies defense’s motion for a gag order, but imposed a lesser restriction. He said he would order attorneys on both sides to observe the standard in their professional code of conduct, which forbids them from giving reporters information that’s not already public and would likely lead to prejudice.

Utahn pleads guilty to aggravated murder in death of 15-year-old Salt Lake girl

July 1, 2020
SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man pleaded guilty Wednesday in the brutal killing of a 15-year-old girl, admitting he murdered her to prevent her from reporting him to police after she broke up with him.
[.....]
French, 26, entered the guilty plea in Salt Lake City’s 3rd District Court to aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors. In exchange, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office agreed not to seek the death penalty and several remaining charges against French were dismissed.

The plea deal stipulates French will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutor Richard Pehrson said Baleigh’s family approved of the agreement.

The charges dropped as part of the plea bargain are: aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; obstructing justice and sexual exploitation of a minor, second-degree felonies; and two additional charges of witness tampering, also a second-degree felony.

Baileigh’s mom was my Uber driver once last fall. Somehow we ended up talking about what had happened to her daughter. She told me how he had driven all the way back from Ohio and hid inside the house, waiting for Baileigh to come home. It was only a few days before she died that she told her mom about the sexual relationship. She broke my heart.
If this post is against the rules, I apologize.

A 26-year-old Utah man will spend the rest of his life in prison for brutally killing a 15-year-old girl after she said she was going to tell the police he had been having sex with her.
The sentence was not a surprise — Shaun Patrick French agreed to the punishment when he pleaded guilty last month to killing Baleigh Bagshaw in May 2018. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to drop the death penalty and several other charges.
French showed little emotion Tuesday and declined to speak when given the chance.

Yes, he got the embarrassing charge of sexual exploitation of a minor off his charges. Should not have been allowed. That was the whole basis of the crime.
