SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (KTVX) — After a four-hour hearing, a Utah judge has denied bail for Kouri Richins, the woman accused of killing her husband and then writing a children’s book about grieving.

During Monday’s hearing, a judge heard from both parties and three witnesses before making a decision to continue holding Richins without bail during her pretrial period.

Richins dropped her head and cried as a detective testified about authorities finding her husband dead and “cold to the touch,” and prosecutors argued the evidence against her was strong enough to deny her bail.

"Eric made and requested several unusual to highly unusual choices and provisions to his estate plan," said attorney Kristal Bowman-Carter, who counseled Eric on estate planning, according to the documents.

Those unusual requests included that his wife not be designated as his health care agent should one be needed and that his wife and children be provided for, but with the caveat that she should be unable to control the financials. Eric chose his father and sister to be trustees on his family's behalf, according to the documents.

Eric sought to "protect the three young sons he and Kouri had together in the long-term by ensuring that Kouri would never be in a position to manage his property after his death," Bowman-Carter said.

In a phone conversation the day after Eric's death, Bowman-Carter explained the trust to Kouri. She said Kouri "became extremely upset. Her behavior (led) me to believe she was learning this for the first time."

  • “what is a lethal.does .of.fetanayl"
  • "can cops force you to do a lie detector test."
  • "death certificate says pending, will life insurance still pay?"
  • "luxury prisons for the rich in america"
  • "how to.permanently delete information from an iphone remotely”

"Most telling among these searches are her queries about how a death caused by poisoning is categorized on a death certificate and what constitutes a lethal dose of fentanyl," the prosecutors wrote.

"I don't know if there is anything about that woman that I believe, so I will just leave it at that." Below is my report immediately following the hearing, where I discuss Kouri's demeanor in the courtroom, who was called to testify and what else Amy said during her heart-breaking speech about her brother.

Eric Richins, a Utah man allegedly poisoned to death by his wife of nine years, took "highly unusual" steps to keep his wife from becoming the sole beneficiary of his estate after his death, according to his attorney.

Prosecutors allege Kouri Richins, 33, murdered her 39-year-old husband by spiking his cocktail with fentanyl the evening of March 3, 2022, at their home in Kamas, just outside of Park City, while their three sons were asleep.

"Eric made and requested several unusual to highly unusual choices and provisions to his estate plan," estate-planning attorney Kristal Bowman-Carter wrote in a declaration filed in Summit County in connection with Kouri Richins' murder case.

Prior to his death, Eric took Kouri off his will and made his sister and father the beneficiaries instead. His family told authorities he had been in fear for his life after Kouri allegedly tried to poison him several years ago in Greece and again on Valentine's Day last year.

The County Attorney's Office said Kouri gave "demonstrably false information" regarding the night Eric died, saying she went to sleep in her child's room around 9:30 p.m., but cell phone records show she browsed the internet after 10:00 p.m., and there's a 14 minute delay from when she unlocked her phone at 3:07 a.m. and when she called 911 at 3:22 a.m. In addition, she deleted her text messages from her phone the night Eric died.
