A man has been arrested and charged with murder in the disappearance of University of Utah senior Mackenzie Lueck, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said at a press conference Friday.

Ajaya Ayoola, reportedly a 31-year-old former Army IT specialist, was charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice and the desecration of a body, police said.

Authorities conducted a search of Ayoola’s property on Wednesday, where they found charred personal items and “female human tissue” in the backyard, Brown said. According to the police chief, DNA from the tissue matched DNA from Lueck’s personal items. Ayoola’s neighbors told police they had seen him burning something in the backyard on June 17 and 18.

Ezekiel was almost 15 when he witnessed a gruesome murder. An angry mob burned his neighbor alive in the street and the man died at his feet. Sadly, it was not the last time he witnessed such horror. With his well respected father as guide and mentor, Ezekiel saw this death, then a death much closer to home when a loved one was killed in the same brutal, terrifying way 50 feet from him, and he could do nothing to stop it. Staggering to recover from these severe traumas, he finds relief and joy in meeting his first love, becomes embroiled in grand theft, and experiences heartbreaking betrayal. Ezekiel must decide if he will join the ranks of a criminal mastermind, or fight to escape the tyranny that has surrounded his young life. Or even beat them at their own game. When trust is lost, can he even trust himself?

Aggravated murder, kidnapping charges filed against Salt Lake City man in connection with Mackenzie Lueck murder
[...]

Charging documents, filed Friday afternoon, indicate that Ajayi and Lueck were both in the same area of Hatch Park in North Salt Lake around 3 a.m. on June 17.

Neighbors of Ajayi told police that he appeared to be burning something in his backyard between the dates of June 17-18, according to charging documents.

During a search of Ajayi's home, police found a "fresh dig area" on Ajayi's property, which was the same place his neighbor told police he was burning something.

When the area was excavated, police found "several charred items" that appeared to be personal items of Lueck's. Other tests were performed on charred material found at the home, which appeared to be "female human tissue," according to charging documents.

Police made a DNA profile for Lueck and compared the profile to materials found in the home. The DNA profile for Lueck was consistent with the DNA profile for materials found at the scene.

Charging documents say Ajayi appears to be a "substantial danger to any other person or to the community."

MacKenzie Lueck murder suspect apparently wrote book involving burning bodies
[...]

In the Amazon book summary, it describes two people burning, starting with:

Ezekiel was almost 15 when he witnessed a gruesome murder. An angry mob burned his neighbor alive in the street and the man died at his feet. Sadly, it was not the last time he witnessed such horror.

Later in the same summary:

a loved one was killed in the same brutal, terrifying way 50 feet from him, and he could do nothing to stop it.

[...]

The Amazon page also provides a biography that reads in part:

Ayoola Ajayi was born and raised in Africa. He has been a salesman, an entrepreneur, and a writer. He has survived a tyrannical dictatorship, escaped a real life crime, traveled internationally, excelled professionally in several industries, and is currently curating a multi-platform advertising campaign for his debut novel, Forge Identity

The profile on Amazon seems to fit the information that is known about the suspect who is confirmed as Nigerian from Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill.

[...]

It is not known if Amazon.com will remove the book from sale. Many reviews on the book are new and call for it to be taken down from the website.

Police arrest Ayoola Ajayi and seek aggravated murder charges in the death of MacKenzie Lueck
[...]

In a police interview with Ajayi, Brown said, the suspect asserted he texted Lueck about 6 p.m. June 16, but had no further contact with her. He said he didn’t know what Lueck looked like and said he hadn’t seen her photos or online profile, Brown said, but he had several photos of her, including an image from an online profile. Brown did not disclose what website the profile was on.

[...]

There were several questions Brown declined to answer or said he didn’t know the answer to on Friday. The chief didn’t know if the June 16 texting was the first contact Lueck and Ajayi had.

Brown said he did not know the nature of any relationship Ajayi and Lueck had or why they met in Hatch Park — though address records show Ajayi had previously lived in an apartment about 0.2 mile from the park. Brown said he didn’t know where or when Lueck was killed. Other than saying “tissue” belonging to Lueck had been found, the chief declined to say what remains have been recovered.

[...]

Ajayi has no criminal history in Utah apart from some traffic citations. North Park police investigated a rape complaint against Ajayi in 2014, but didn’t pursue the case after the female victim said she didn’t want to press charges, according to a news release the North Park Police Department issued Friday.

[...]

“He's definitely a guy that likes to maintain an appearance,” said SM, who said he first met Ajayi when they were in basic training together with the U.S. Army in Fort Jackson, S.C. In January 2018, Moore relocated to Utah and temporarily moved into downstairs rooms that Ajayi has advertised for rent on Airbnb.

[...]

As a roommate, Ajayi also “tends to have some anger issues,” Moore said. He would suddenly become “irate and disruptive” over small matters, Moore said, like disagreements over how furniture was arranged or the heat level used in cooking.

“He doesn't like to be told anything other than his way,” Moore said. “He snaps or loses his temper, [then] he comes back to his sweet self.”

Moore said he moved out because the tension was too persistent.

[...]

In fact, Moore said he didn’t even know that Ajayi had been married. Ajayi and his ex-wife married in 2011 in Texas, and they separated in 2017; their divorce was finalized in January, according to court records.

[...]

Court records show he received unemployment benefits at some point in 2017, and, in 2016, he was a defendant in eviction proceedings in Davis County. According to the LinkedIn profile, he has been employed in IT since 2017.

Her family told police Mackenzie had texted them after arriving at the Salt Lake International Airport during the early hours of June 17. She had been in California for her grandmother’s funeral.

Detectives traced the texts, and found video of the 23-year-old at the airport.

We knew that she was on that phone, which is a footprint to follow,“ he said.

They found she got a ride from a car service from the airport to Hatch Park in North Salt Lake.

Less than a minute after meeting someone at the park, her phone was shut off and stopped sending data and location information.

“We were able to track her to the park, and the last time we knew that we had any identification with her phone was 3 a.m.,” said Chief Brown.

Lueck’s phone records showed investigators her last communication, which was with the suspect.

[...]

“We had a digital footprint that Mackenzie was there, and we had a digital footprint that the arrested person was there – at the same time. It was within a minute or so, and then that is the last digital evidence that we have for Mackenzie,” the chief said.

The evidence led police to Ajayi’s home at 547 North 1000 West in the Fairpark neighborhood of Salt Lake.
