Mackenzie Lueck suspect Ayoola Ajayi lived a life of contradictions, unfinished business

July 1, 2019

Then in 2014, Ajayi’s life took a turn for the worse. He became the suspect in a rape investigation, the North Park Police Department said Friday. The investigation was dropped, however, after the woman decided not to press charges.

Five years later, he again finds himself the subject of a police investigation.

Although charges haven’t been filed against Ajayi, 31, he was booked Friday on suspicion of aggravated murder, kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body in connection with Lueck’s disappearance, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
[...]

After a week of searching for Lueck, investigators said that her body had likely been burned. When authorities searched Ajayi’s home, they found a freshly dug area, human tissue belonging to a woman and some of Lueck’s personal items that had been charred, police said. Neighbors told authorities they saw him burning something using gasoline in his backyard on June 17 and 18.
[...]

S Moore, who said he lived with Ajayi for a few months, told the Salt Lake Tribune that Ajayi was an Airbnb host who was intelligent and had a good relationship with his clients.

“A.J. would be the kind of guy that’s, ‘Hey, let’s go to the Asian supermarket and buy a couple of crabs and go back to my house and eat,’ ” Moore said.

He invited women over but did not seem to have long-term relationships, Moore said, noting that he wasn’t aware Ajayi had married in Texas in 2011 and separated in 2017. The divorce was finalized in January, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

It was Ajayi’s anger issues that drove Moore to move away, he said.

Ajayi would suddenly become “irate and disruptive” over small things, like disagreements over how furniture was arranged. “He doesn't like to be told anything other than his way,” Moore said. “He snaps or loses his temper, [then] he comes back to his sweet self.”

Still, Moore said he never saw his roommate act violently.

Murder Of University Of Utah Student Mackenzie Lueck Has Dallas Connection
[...]

According to their marriage license, Ajayi married a woman in Dallas named, TJ.

[...]

“He was threatening me, saying he was going to get me locked up, saying he was going to get me kidnapped, he was going to get me killed and all that, but I stopped talking to him because I just feared for my life,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins never reported the incident to police and Ajayi has no criminal record in Dallas.

But the CBS 11 I-Team did ask the police department if officers ever had been in contact with Ajayi while he was here.

There has been no response yet.

What also remains unclear is where Ajayi stayed when he was in Dallas and just how long he was here.

When he got married – records show his wife listed her home address as apartments off Zang Boulevard.

But talking to residents there on Monday, none said they knew or even heard of her.

Report details rape allegations against suspect in Mackenzie Lueck killing
More search warrants were served over the weekend in connection with the death of University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck, Salt Lake police confirmed Monday.

Detectives were continuing to collect evidence in anticipation of formal charges being filed against Ayoola Ajayi, 31. Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer declined to say what specifically investigators were looking for, but said one of the warrants was served at Ajayi's house in the Fairpark neighborhood of Salt Lake City, where police have already spent many hours collecting multiple bags of evidence.

[...]

Also Monday, more details were released about a rape investigation involving Ajayi in Cache County in 2014...

[...]

The woman said she told herself at the time, "OK, let's get it over," and then went to the hospital for a sexual assault exam afterward, the report states. The woman told police "she felt that it was her fault because she was not assertive enough," and she declined to press charges.

She also told police that after the alleged assault, she avoided Ajayi at work. When she sent him a text telling him "not to contact her ever again," he responded with "what she described as a not so nice text," according to the report.

A heartbroken University of Utah will hold a vigil Monday evening commemorating student MacKenzie Lueck, who police say was killed two weeks ago by a man from Salt Lake City.

The Find MacKenzie Lueck Facebook page and the University of Utah student government are hosting the vigil at 6 p.m. at the university's Union Lawn. Students and members of the community will gather to remember Lueck – a pre-nursing and kinesiology student known to her friends as "Kenzie."

“She's like a nurturer,” KS, one of Lueck’s sorority sisters at Alpha Chi Omega, told The Salt Lake Tribune. “She's almost a mother to me."

No formal charges yet in Mackenzie Lueck's murder
[...]

Steve Burton, who leads the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said the jail has a 72-hour hold policy that starts on the first business day following an arrest.

That means if not formally charged by Wednesday afternoon, Ajayi could presumably be released, but Burton said that is unlikely.

[...]

Burton said one reason for delaying the filing of charges would be to allow more time for a key decision. Prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to pursue the death penalty, and the clock starts after he’s formally charged.

Slain Utah college student Mackenzie Lueck remembered at vigil
[...]

“Everyone who knew Kenzie knew how fun she was to be around. She was a people pleaser,” KS, one of Lueck’s close friends, said through tears as she spoke at the vigil. “It breaks my heart knowing she died alone in such a scary place.”

Other friends shared memories of cramming for exams together and taking weekend trips up to Lake Powell...

[...]

She was leading a freshman orientation trip when the news broke of Lueck’s death. “It shocked everyone again. We’re still waiting for more information, but it makes everyone be a little more careful and wary of their surroundings,” SW said.

[...]

DC, a recent graduate of the university, said the vigil was a sobering reminder of his privilege. “She doesn’t get to graduate, or experience life after college,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine this happening to me or my family.”

[...]

The vigil and nonprofit organization are only the first steps in honoring Lueck’s memory, friends shared.

“Kenzie would want to be remembered as a kind, helpful person who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed in,” CR, one of Lueck’s close friends, said. “She could make you smile when all you wanted to do was cry, and that has been helping me get through this.”

More warrants expected in MacKenzie Lueck case; police may be checking for other victims
[...]

Chief Mike Brown confirmed Monday that officers executed two search warrants Friday night, but he declined to provide details about them.

“This is a very complicated case,” he said. “It has a huge digital footprint, and I can guarantee you there will be more warrants as we move forward.”

[...]

Bertram, who is not involved with the Lueck case, said investigators are “absolutely” looking at whether there are other victims. They’ll be looking at everywhere Ajayi has lived, worked and even vacationed.

“Typically, people who are involved in these type of crimes have been involved in other types of crimes,” Bertram said. “They may not have been caught, but their behaviors are such that they engaged in things that progressed up to something like this.”

The past criminal history does not necessarily mean other murders but could include crimes like voyeurism or something fire-related, Bertram said.

[...]

Chief Brown said 40 to 60 officers are still working the Lueck case.

Utah woman says she had uncomfortable date with murder suspect
[...]

“I met him on Bumble, the online dating app,” said the woman speaking with Fox 13 News on the condition of anonymity.

The online meeting was last year. After chatting through the app, the two decided to meet for lunch where things took an uncomfortable turn.

“He just couldn’t answer questions about, you know, what friends he had at work, what conversations he had, what he really did for a living. It was all really vague,” she said.

She says she never felt truly scared, but had an inner feeling something was not right.

“He just seemed like a very strange individual and not anyone I would want to spend time with," she said.

Reports: MacKenzie Lueck's alleged killer was banned from USU campus, accused of rape
[...]

According to records from Utah State University, Ajayi was banned from the campus in 2012 after a theft investigation.

He also appeared to be living in a janitor's closet and at various buildings around campus.

At one point, campus officials notified Ajayi that his visa had lapsed and that he was no longer eligible to take classes, the report states.

Documents from police about a 2014 investigation in North Logan showed Ajayi was accused of raping a woman.

Police reports 2News inspected say cops felt there was a strong case, but they said the woman decided not to meet with them or pursue the case further.

Friends of slain Utah student MacKenzie Lueck hold a vigil to remember how she loved tacos, yellow swimsuits and throwing parties for her cat
When MacKenzie Lueck threw a birthday party for her cat, she didn’t hold back.

“She even got champagne,” said her friend, KK.

“Oh my goodness. Do you remember the cake?” added KS. “She made it out of special cat food.”

All of Lueck’s closest friends were invited to celebrate Nova, a fluffy gray kitty whom she adored, as she turned another year older. They were asked to wear pointy party hats and throw confetti. And everyone sang off-key while Lueck unwrapped a new toy for the cat.

“Now, that’s one of my favorite memories of her,” KS added, trying to smile but wiping away tears as they carried mascara down her cheeks.

[...]

They shared stories of how Lueck loved to get tacos from street carts and always seemed to be raiding someone’s fridge for a snack. They talked about how she smiled so much after she got braces that it cut into her lips. They said she was bubbly and kind and always planning road trips to Lake Powell.

In front of them was a big picture of Lueck in a yellow swimsuit — bathing in the sun like she liked to do. And as the setting sun shone down on those mourning, they promised to honor her the best they could.

Utah State University banned the man who is accused of killing Mackenzie Lueck

The campus police reports also describe Ajayi, a Nigerian immigrant, as overstaying his visa and perhaps being homeless. When USU police booked Ajayi into the Cache County jail in 2012 on suspicion of misdemeanor theft, officers notified both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a Nigerian consulate.

“This letter is to inform you that if you feel you need to visit our campus,” wrote Eric R. Olsen, the associate vice president for student services to Ajayi on Aug. 2, 2012, “you must first contact the Utah State University Police Department and have them escort you on and off campus. If you violate this mandate you will be cited for trespassing and will face additional legal consequences.”

While Ajayi was booked into jail on suspicion of theft, a search of Utah court records gives no indication he was charged.
