Man charged in student's death appears in court as friends wonder, 'Why Mackenzie?'
[...]

As the initial court hearing for Ayoola Adisa Ajayi, 31, was happening, police received a tip of additional evidence discovered along the Jordan River Parkway near 700 North and Redwood Road.

Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Schearer confirmed Monday that additional evidence had been recovered, but he declined to say exactly what was found.

[...]

Ajayi, who is being held without bail, appeared in a yellow jail uniform and glasses over a video feed from the Salt Lake County Jail with his attorney, Neal Hamilton, at his side. He has not yet entered pleas to charges of aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, desecration of a human body, a second-degree felony, and obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony.

[...]

Three of Lueck's friends who attended the hearing told reporters outside the courtroom they continue to wonder why their friend was killed and whether her death had been planned.

"Why McKenzie? I think that's a big question for us," said Lueck's friend AF. She said she and her friends "just immediately lost our breath" when Ajayi first appeared on the screen.

Man charged in Utah college student's death appears in court
[...]

Ajayi's court-appointed attorney, Neal Hamilton, didn't say anything during the hearing about the charges and the public defender's office has said it will not be commenting on the case.

Lueck's friends said afterward they are relieved that a suspect is behind bars. They said seeing Ajayi by video in court was shocking and left them angry and sad and took their breath away.

AF said they don't plan to say his name or give him any attention moving forward, but are following the legal process to make sure Lueck gets justice.

"We are all still in extreme shock. Even right now I feel like I could call her and text her and she would answer," AF said. "We didn't get to say goodbye to our friend."

They said they still have many questions, including why Lueck was chosen and if the killing was planned. They said they don't know how they knew one another.

"What did she do to deserve this?" KS asked.

“Words do not begin to describe the amount of sadness that we have been feeling over the past few weeks. We know that we share this pain with family, friends, and everyone in the community.

“MacKenzie Lueck was a strong independent woman that always chose to empower herself and those around her. MacKenzie was confident and always knew the right things to say. She was compassionate, loyal and kind to those around her. She is deeply loved and will be missed.”

[...]

“The person that took MacKenzie’s life has affected our entire community. Emotionally, we are in a state of shock, pain, anger and sadness. However, the person that took MacKenzie’s life cannot take away her voice. We will continue to persevere and live our lives how MacKenzie lived — in love and service.

“MacKenzie was excited to serve the community. With ‘MacKenzie’s Voice,’ we will continue to carry on her legacy by being a service to others in need.

“We hope that with the formation of ‘MacKenzie’s Voice’ we can bring light to a dark situation,” the statement continued. “We plan to (a) Continue to advocate for victims of violence in our community, (b) Support families with grief/trauma counseling, (c) Create a ‘manual’ for families and friends and friends of missing person(s), (d) Continue working with police departments to promote educational opportunities regarding missing person(s) investigations and workshops for our community, (e) Focus on finding other missing people.”
