The body of Utah student MacKenzie Lueck has been found in Logan Canyon, police say - Salt Lake Tribune
[...]

Brown and Gill both issued pleas to give the Lueck family, living in California, privacy as they grieve.

“Whenever our community experiences a loss like this, the tragic circumstances have the potential to tear at the fabric of our community,” the chief said. “I am here to ask you, to implore you, to remain respectful.

“The tight-knit nature of this community is what helped us close this case so quickly. You have rallied together behind the Lueck family through this trial and I have felt that overwhelming support,” he added. "I hope that we take the time this weekend to talk to our loved ones and work together to prevent crimes like this from occurring.”

It could have been, but if so, why did it take so long? Wouldn't they go there immediately. I honestly don't know and that's why I'm asking.
I'm not an expert in how cell phone pings work, but would imagine that a cell tower would ping the general area but not exact location, or there could have been multiple pings throughout the canyon, but not showing exactly where the body was, just where he had been. In that terrain it could take a long time to uncover what they were actually looking for - and that's if it was indeed through cell/internet records.
If it was from physical evidence like from the car or photos of the car, finding the location within a wide radius may have taken a lot longer. I bet they had detectives or CSI-type people out looking (maybe even in unmarked vehicles) but didn't want to reveal the location lest hikers/vacationers/amateur sleuths go looking and mess something up.

DA Sim Gill made an interesting comment about the Logan Canyon lead being produced by a collaboration of the DA's office and SLC homicide dept. It was described as an "opportunity". Could have been info from AA himself, IHMO.

It's at about 12:10 in the PC.

They had to get warrants, receive the information, and analyze it. ? MOO

Perp talked to a jailhouse snitch.

I never would have thought this but after listening to hundreds of true crme podcasts I realzie how often then put police undercover in your cell for confessions.

Mackenzie Lueck's body has been found, police say - CNN
[...]

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, who earlier this week was granted an extension to file charges against Ajayi, said at Friday's news conference that his office would move forward with formally filing charges in the "early part of next week."

The investigation, Gill stressed, remains ongoing.

A suspect would typically only be allowed to be held in custody for 72 hours before charges are filed or they must be released. Because of the extension, Gill told CNN, his office has until Wednesday at 5 p.m. local time.

The Salt Lake Legal Defender Association said in a statement sent to CNN it had been appointed to represent Ajayi, and stressed that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

"The facts in this matter will be established in due course through the processes of the criminal justice system," the statement said.

Does that mean that the lawyer we heard about last week, the one with the impressive resume in sexual assault cases, has already bailed out?

USU is near Logan Canyon.

No cell service is needed for Google maps to continue to track a person. There was a California case (recounted in the podcast To Live and Die in L.A.) where it was used to locate a body.

I'm guessing that AA wouldn't have been able to find his way into a mountainous, deserted area without his phone. The stupidity of all the things he did post-mortem makes me unsurprised that he would have taken his phone.
Yeah, and if he didn't think he'd ever be caught (aka, thought he covered his tracks/hid his identity from the get-go, he'd have no reason to worry about evidence at his house or from his phone/computer etc.).

Wow, this is not a development I was expecting at all. I assumed her whole body (even if dismembered) was in his back yard. Now I'm wondering what the tissue was and how much of her was in the canyon.

I’m bothered by how he went from sleeping on campus, to being evicted from an apartment, to qualifying to buy a home, to now affording a secret room addition built by a contractor?

Where is his new affluence coming from? I wonder if the answer to the question will answer many more.

Good question. The article doesn't say when the public defender's office sent the statement to CNN so it's hard to say. MOO

Police said they found "charred material" that was "forensically determined to be female human tissue.”

It seemed incredibly unlikely that AA would have been able to burn and consume a body in his backyard in a residential area, such that only forensic evidence of female human tissue remained. Too small an area and neighbors are too close to get a big enough fire. You would need a ranchette in Colorado for that.

AA's apparent attempt to burn a body (and failing) suggests that he never had much of a plan for evidence disposal.

This makes it a little less likely he has done something so depraved in the past. These guys tend to get better with experience.

Seeing the new WS headline on the banner is surreal, “MACKENZI LUECK'S BODY HAS BEEN FOUND”, essentially that she has been found “twice.”

Moderator, please see spelling of ML’s name in headline, tia.

Are you thinking he attempted to burn her whole self in his yard, failed, and then transported her charred body to the canyon?

Gosh, I wonder if it was something found on/in the car, like vegetation or mud in the tires. But that would still be a very large search area.

Hi Tortoise!

Its another horrible case isn't it?

Now that I think about it more, I think AA put KLs flesh in the bonfire, and then took what remained to where the rest of her remains were found.

Imo, no way would he dig up a burned body, and move it.

What an absolutely horror. My heart is even more shattered for KL, and her family.

Imho

Yes it is. We may see the same thing in Najah's case. So far, they've only found a foot. :(

Sounds like it could be. He probably can’t afford to pay her.

I think this is the most likely case, and any other possibility would be even more horrific.
