I may be getting the timing mixed up. This other renter that was accused of felony rape.... what did he drive? I remember us looking at an Airbnb review that was weird. Could that have been this renter? They’d know what car he drove by now though. Surely.

Odd inconsistencies from the driver/LE.

I don't actually think there were two cars. I think the Lyft driver misidentified AA's car as a maroon Subaru, or someone got that info wrong. He didn't say maroon Subaru in the interview, did he? The police mentioned only one car on the surveillance tape, which I'm assuming was at a nearby light or something, as Hatch Park didn't actually have cameras. The driver also didn't say anything about a woman getting out of the car to help with bags in the interview. He said he transferred the bags from his car to the "friend's" car and that he only saw the "friend" from behind and thought he/she had "black curls" and a "soft voice," so assumed it was a woman (also he may have figured woman because any man would most likely get out of the car and help with the bags). Again, I think he just convinced himself it was a woman because he would feel better about dropping a ride off in the park at 3 AM with a woman - again, not that he did anything wrong. There is no way AA looks like a woman from behind or anything other way!

Also, do the masked texts indicate they had only been communicating that Sunday? I guess I had always assumed that if they hadn't met in person before, they had at least been communicating for a while and sending pics.

I've been following this case pretty much since it happened, before I had an account here, so these updates fascinate me. The reference to the stun gun likely explains how ML was incapacitated so quickly after entering the car, and why her phone was turned off immediately. These were two of the features of the case that had always puzzled me. Them exchanging texts via a third-party service might also explain how the victim was lured to the park to begin with--she may have been misled regarding who she was actually meeting. But the mention of a woman potentially being involved, and of other renters in the house that night, really throws things for a loop. We hadn't heard anything about a woman suspect before this. I'm inclined to think this "woman" is really AA, either in disguise or simply mistaken for a woman, but man, oh, man, I don't know how that guy passes for a woman, even at 3 A.M. in poor lighting. The different accounts about how ML's luggage got in the car, and whatever contact ML had with this mysterious woman who was there to pick her up, are also bizarre. May it be that the man interviewed by the media who claimed to be the driver is not in fact the driver? But if that were the case, I'd have to assume we would know that by now.

But goodness gracious, that house must've been a horror house. Or at least, AA and his renters apparently had every intention of turning it into one. I wonder what his plan for ML was. I've never believed he had been planning her death that night. He had something else in mind for her, I'm sure.

SBM

I found it interesting that, according to this article, he had sent her a picture of himself, at her request.

Warrant reveals new information about the last moments of MacKenzie Lueck's life

So, it seems like she at least knew what he looked like, even if he undoubtedly lied about other details.

But did she know he was going to be the person waiting for her in the park, though? That was my question. The reference to a woman being there to meet her complicates that. Mistaken identity? Or did AA really have a female accomplice (although I have to believe we would've heard about her by now if so)? Also, the way the article is worded, it says that AA claimed he had sent her the photo, not necessarily that he actually did. He also claimed this several days before he was arrested. It may not necessarily be true.

By the way, what does "SBM" mean?

It doesn't say he claimed, though. It literally describes, with no attribution to him at all, what was on his phone, including the text of a message and that he sent a photo, responding to her request. That sounds like info in a warrant that was obtained directly from his phone, not what he claimed was on his phone.

I'm also not sure what to make of the claim about the woman. I have a hard time believing he would be mistaken to be a woman but nothing else has suggested he had an accomplice. Very weird.

SBM = snipped by me

The only person who ever said anything about a woman is the Lyft driver, and he also states he only saw the driver from the back, saw black curls and heard a faint voice. Again, I'm thinking that the Lyft driver is sort of getting himself off the hook by claiming he thought the driver was probably a woman and again, the Lyft driver doesn't have to explain himself at all. He did nothing wrong, but others might wonder why he dropped off ML in the park with a man. Well, because she told the Lyft driver she was meeting a friend.

I agree that AA used the stun gun to incapacitate ML and take/turn off her phone almost as soon as she got into his car. I'm not sure how masked texts work, so I don't even know what was going on there. He could've sent her one of his modeling pics and she may have been thinking - decent looking guy with a good body.

I’ve been away from this case for a bit and came back just to check on any progress. Goodness, I’ve got some catching up to do! I thought the details were awful before, but they sound worse now.

Court documents outline new details in Mackenzie Lueck murder case

Feb 5, 2020

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office could not comment Wednesday on whether investigators believe there was a second woman at Hatch Park, stating only that the warrants are based on preliminary information available to police at the time, and additional information will be flushed out during court proceedings. bbm

Dating apps became a focus early in the investigation. On June 22, detectives learned that “Mackenzie is involved in groups such as Tinder, Seeking Arrangement, Call Her Daddy that include sexual conversations, photos, videos and date arrangements that Mackenzie has been involved in for quite some time,” according to the warrants.

Also on June 22, Lueck’s father told police he discovered his daughter had been using a credit card that he did not know she had, according to the warrants, as well as a separate bank account. He also discovered that his daughter was using TextMe, a third-party messaging application for mobile phones.

The Luecks said they knew MacKenzie planned to use a ride share, such as Uber or Lyft, from the airport.

The Lyft driver who dropped MacKenzie off at Hatch Park — where police believe she was picked up by Ajayi — after she got back to Salt Lake that night also offered some unusual information.

A maroon Subaru was already in the parking lot when the Lyft driver pulled up to Hatch Park. He told police that he saw a woman get out of a vehicle to greet Lueck, and that Lueck and the unknown woman appeared casual and friendly with each other.

ETA: Uber driver later learned the driver of the alleged Subaru (Kia Optima) was the suspect AA (not a woman). This would ordinarily be a gift for the accused but glad that investigators collected much more evidence.

Warrant reveals new information about the last moments of MacKenzie Lueck's life

It seems the Uber driver's initial belief was that a woman was driving AA's vehicle described as a maroon Subaru (AA's vehicle identified by LE as dark KIA Optima).

KUTV/2 article does not make it clear if Uber driver changed his mind about not seeing a woman waiting for ML in the park after shown AA's photo but other articles seem to imply Uber guy agreed it was AA and/or a man that ML left with.

Thanks for clearing it up! I will have to go back and review all the details and evidence from the case. It's been a while since I looked at everything and with so many months gone by I think some of the facts fell from my memory.

Bumping these earlier posts to add some clarity on how the info being discussed came about as well as the sources for the information.

First, the initial search warrant issued by police also described the suspect waiting in the park for ML as a woman driving a maroon vehicle. This preliminary information first used by the police in the warrant came from a witness -- the uber/lyft driver.

This description was the rideshare driver's recollection long after he dropped one of his many rides off in a park and after police notified ML was missing. We cannot fault him for what he thought he saw at the time. However, I think it's equally important to note that he acknowledged that he was mistaken that AA was a woman as soon as the police showed him photographs of AA and the car that he was believed to be driving. Good photos that were NOT taken in a dark park around 2 AM.

I don't believe we know the rideshare driver's country of origin but it's my personal experience that there are several countries where AA's seated, rear- view of only his head and shoulders could resemble a female of that land. AA also did NOT have close-cropped typical male hair cut when seen by the driver.

(Please see the photos I'm reposting here showing the difference between the length of AA's hair near the time he was seen by the rideshare driver (i.e., at arrest) compared to what we were more familiar with from his various internet profiles).

From the Feb 5 MSM article above, it was ML's father that told police he discovered ML's long-time use of the third-party texting ap (Textme) for mobile phones that ML was using for quite some time most likely to keep her alternative dating practices private or from others.

Also on June 22, Lueck’s father told police he discovered his daughter had been using a credit card that he did not know she had, according to the warrants, as well as a separate bank account. He also discovered that his daughter was using TextMe, a third-party messaging application for mobile phones.

I also don't think it's beyond reality to believe that ML turned her phone off when she arrived at her destination (the park) seeing her ride waiting-- or after she got in his vehicle. I think ML had reason not to want to answer her phone/text given the only person that knew for certain that ML was awake was her Mom. Having just arrived home from my grandmother's funeral -- it would not be unlike my own mother to phone/text me and encourage me to get a good night's rest or some other comforting words before I went to sleep.

Site of Mackenzie Lueck murder up for sale … described as what?
The home that police say hosted the murder of a University of Utah student, Mackenzie Lueck, is back on the housing market; however, the online listing is raising a few eyebrows amongst neighbors.
It’s not just what’s on the listing that has some neighbors questioning it, but what’s not on it. The Zillow listing doesn’t make any mention whatsoever of Lueck’s murder. It mentions that the basement needs work “due to water,” and it describes the home as “the cutest house on the block.”

KUTV/2 reported on the home last October after a 'For Lease' sign was posted in the yard.

The "For Lease" sign was removed from Ajayi's property five hours after 2News called PMI Property Management, the company listed on the sign. Two employees said they had no idea about the murder.

It appears from the listing that the property is under lease until November 2020 at $1800./mo.

I don't know if that info actually has to be in the listing, does it? It might be enough that the realtor discloses it to any potential buyer. Also, do the laws in each state vary regarding revealing negative associations to the home?

You are right SoCalGirl!

Utah Home Sellers: Disclosures Required Under State Law

The only disclosure explicitly required by Utah law is that sellers tell prospective buyers whether there has been “use, storage, or manufacture of methamphetamines” in the home. (See Utah Code. Annot. § 57-27-201.)
Utah Code. Annot. §57-1-1 outlines the disclosures that sellers do NOT have to make. A seller does not have to disclose that a home was the location of a homicide, a suicide, a decontaminated methamphetamine lab, or residence by a person with a life-ending disease such as AIDS.
Despite these minimal statutory requirements, however, Utah sellers routinely provide much more information

Seems the property is being marketed to rental investors and if listing is correct that property is currently under lease agreement until November at $1800/mo there will probably be interest from certain buyers.

4 bedrooms, 2 baths - and draft plans for your very own hidden bdsm torture chamber made to appear as a wine cellar - tossed in for free with a full-price offer.

When JC’s family home came on the market (before demolition), I pondered prospects for a buyer... And decided that although something horrifically unfathomable happened there, that the right buyer could focus on the very happy family that made memories there but for one BAD night.

But AA’s house? I don’t imagine anything good having ever happened there. No amount of money in the world could entice me to own that monstrous site. I hope it goes into foreclosure & gets demolished. Mo

RSBM.

I expect the neighbors hope exactly the same thing. At least those who own their homes. No one – at least no one healthy – wants to have a chamber of horrors in full view day after day, year after year. Nor do they want their kids to hear the stories about burn piles or secret rooms, and anyone who knows kids can anticipate they'll want to explore or play detective or dare each other to trespass there. If the site is not demolished and redesigned it has high potential to become a notorious location. Lurid photos of the house, garage, and grounds will live on forever on the Internet, long after AA's trial is over, and that will be terrible for neighborhood reputation, real estate prices, etc.

Gushing in real estate ads aside, there is nothing "cute" about that property any longer and there won't be until it is razed and improved upon.

MOO. Edited for typo.

Ugh. To each his own, I suppose. MOO

Noting:

[...]

It turns out, the man renting the property currently knew all about its past before he moved in. Doug Olinger told 2News living in a former crime scene doesn't bother him.

[...]

The house does have some strange features, Olinger says.

"He had a version of a Murphy door that looked like a bookcase," he said, referring to the home's previous owner, Ayoola Ajayi. "So imagine a book case that's actually a door."

Ugh indeed.

Not only does living in a "former crime scene" not bother him, but I guess providing monthly rental income to an accused murderer and sexual predator doesn't either.

A hidden closet with a secret bookcase door. This tops the proposed wine-cellar-with-meat-hooks chamber in that... IT EXISTS.

Murphy Door Store | Hidden Door Bookshelves, Hardware & More
Never heard them called Murphy doors before- just library doors, hidden doors, bookcase doors. So wonder if this was the brand of door installed? If so, I wonder what info, if any, the custom order people heard when processing AA’s order.

Of all the rental properties in SLC that have a backyard for his dogs to run in- he had to pick that one? I’d no more let my dogs play in that yard than my kids. To each his own, but REALLY? Jmho

Thanks for posting about the Murphy door. When I read the article, the secret bookcase door jumped out at me, too. It's certainly suspicious given the charges against AA.

Although, older houses typically have very small closets. Years ago I don't think that folks had as much clothing or "stuff" as we do today. The Murphy Door increases storage space for smaller closet areas. They are an attractive way to add storage space to a small area. So, it could be a practical storage solution, or a way for AA to hide certain things. It appears that these doors can be locked in place. Hmmm... don't think I'm going to ponder this too long.
