UT - Man with sword killed by police in Utah County - Shot in the back???

Imo it is still kind of barbaric to "shoot to kill" if the officer is not facing another gun, but again jmo.

I hear ya, and usually agree with you on most cases. But I think the officers are not just thinking about their safety, but the public at large. If a grown man is walking around town swinging a large sword, and lunges at them, what else might he do, if he is desperate?

Whoa! That is definitely NOT a toy sword and that is definitely not a small sword either.

"I believe that maybe my son thought, 'Maybe I'll try to get a job at Panda, maybe this sword will impress them,'" she said.

"(He probably) thought he was cool with the sword. He was more of a little kid trying to be a teenager."

I am sorry but that is NOT a normal thought process for a 22 year old man.
Even an immature one, it simply is not a normal thought process.
I think everyone would agree with that. :twocents:

That is the thought process of a mentally ill or disabled young man.
I simply don't understand why the family would deny this?
The whole thing just doesn't make sense to me. :dunno:

Umm, if I was working at Panda and a man walked in with a sword asking for a job, I'd call 911 and assume it was a hostile, dangerous situation.

"This photograph was taken minutes before Darrien Nathaniel Hunt, 22, of Saratoga Springs, was shot and killed by police Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, as he was walking near a Panda Express restaurant while carrying a Samurai sword. A woman driving in the area took the photo to send to her husband because she thought it was odd. But she said he didn't seem threatening. Investigators on Saturday said he brandished the sword and lunged toward officers, prompting them to shoot him."

Is it possible woman taking photo thought he did not seem threatening because....
1. driving in car, she was protected from potential attack by virtually any pedestrian?
2. he was also walking away from her?
3. if he turned around & lunged at her w sword or other means, she could have stomped on gas & escaped from him.
Appears from reflections in pix, imo, she did not even roll window down to take pix; she was behind safety glass.

IOW, he 'didn't seem threatening', because he was not threatening her?
If she had been picking up her (hypothetical) 3rd grader at strip mall and seen sword-dude 5 ft from child
approaching child, would she still have said 'no threat?'

Compare woman-in-car to LEOs' situation:
1. LEOs were not in car protected from potential attack.
2. Seems, sword-dude was not walking away from 2 LEOs.
3. Was reported that sword-dude lunged w sword at LEOs, or one LEO.
No safety glass separating LEOs and sword-dude.

JM2cts.

Her intuition felt uncomfortable about it. That's why she bothered taking the photo!

My own son has been in martial arts forever. He has an arsenal of weapons. Some days he walks or rides his bike to classes.
He's black with dreadlocks almost to his waist.
Never had a single problem.
Why? Because not only are they sheathed they are in a zippered weapons bag.

Family members say they believe Hunt was costume playing, or "cos-playing," when he encountered the officers.
Edwards described cos-playing as dressing up as an animation character.
The family says Hunt had an affinity for anime, a style of Japanese animation, and for drawing anime characters.

At Friday's press event, Edwards presented a picture of an anime character he believes Hunt may have been impersonating.
Prior to the shooting, Hunt was seen wearing a large red shirt and dark pants, with afro-style hair and a sword strapped to his back, similar to an anime character called Samurai Champloo.

Before comparisons between Hunt and the anime character surfaced on social media, family members had no reason for why Hunt brought the sword with him that morning.

Normal adult men do not dress up as anime characters and go out in public. :twocents:
WHY does this family insist that this was a fully functioning normal adult man? :dunno:

What I can't understand is, why would any family allow this 22 yr old that dresses up like a cartoon character to have a sword AND take it out in public ?!

Absolutely! Something made her want to take that picture. Her own intuition kicked in and knew it was something to be wary of.

Did officer who shot Darrien Hunt use excessive force in house party raid?

-------------------------

Now, members of six Saratoga Springs families are accusing Schauerhamer of using excessive force when he and other officers kicked a door down and arrested seven teens while raiding a house party with high school students back in February.

911 call released in connection with Darrien Hunt's shooting death

The caller's voice is not excited or panicked.

He tells the 911 dispatcher that there's a man in a red shirt walking along Redwood Road near the Wal-Mart.
The caller did not indicate that the man was threatening anyone.

"But he was carrying a samurai sword," the caller told the dispatcher.

Darrien Hunt shooting legally justified, county attorney says

"He didn't do anything. And people won't even come forward and say he didn't do anything, they want to justify the cops. How can you justify the cops? He's 147 pounds. You know how skinny that is? How can he, with a sword, come to a gun fight?" she said in tears Tuesday.

There is something so wrong with this picture, he was a 22 y/o MAN not a little kid. She talks about him like he's a preteen. Is there something going on that would cause him to act like a child?

I firmly believe there is, yes. They from the beginning have talked about him as if he was disabled.
I cannot think of a reason why they wouldn't come out and SAY that.
However, either he had a disability/mental illness they haven't revealed...
Or he was like the most coddled young man ever. That's all I can come up with.
