"On June 12, 1982, Marty James Shook, a 22-year-old hitchhiker from Sparks, Nev., was killed execution-style in a canyon near Price, Utah. Shook was shot in the back of the head and his genitals were removed. His nude body was found by a fisherman. The crime is thought to be linked to a serial killer who was responsible for more than a dozen deaths that often left his victims mutilated and abandoned. The killer was never apprehended."

…The killing remains unsolved, as does the 1982 killing of 22-year-old Marty Shook in Utah. Police say they were killed by the same gun, and linked by proximity to Interstate 80.

The remains of Shook, 22, nude except for socks, were found June 14, 1982, by a fisherman in scrub oak off Route 40 in Daniel’s Canyon, 15 miles east of Heber City, Utah.

It is believed he was shot execution-style elsewhere and his body was dumped in the rural area.

Investigators determined he had hitchhiked two days earlier from Sparks, Nevada, which is along I-80 just east of the California border.

Shook, who was described as a free spirit, had worked in Colorado for a few summers. In 1982, according to Park, he decided to join his uncle and girlfriend on a fishing trip to California.

Shook and his uncle’s girlfriend got into an argument, and Shook said he was going back to Colorado. He had his uncle drop him off in Sparks on June 12, 1982, the detective said.

It is assumed he got a ride from there, likely with a truck driver on I-80 headed to Salt Lake, he said.

A trucker headed to Colorado after leaving Salt Lake likely would take Route 40 off I-80 at Park City and go through Heber City, near where the body was found,Park said.

Forty-seven hours after Shook was dropped off at Sparks, his body was discovered, police determined.

Shook was, as Park put it, “often off the grid.” His remains were not identified for several months, until his mother reported him missing after he failed to call her on her birthday, Park said.

Jack franklin andrews was found dismembered and castrated in Litchfield Connecticut in Nov of 1986.

The Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad is investigating the death of Jack Andrews. Jack Andrews was a transient who was known to hitchhike across the United States using tractor trailer trucks as his preferred transportation. Jack's dismembered body was found in the Litchfield Rest Area off of Route 8. The investigation developed indicates that Jack Andrews was last seen at a rest area off of I-95 in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Early on, detectives explored a tip that a particular truck was seen at the rest stop the morning Andrews’ body was discovered. Officials of that trucking company said there was no reason for one of their trucks to have been in the area that day. Police were never able to identify the truck driver.

The reluctance of potential witnesses to step forward also hurt the investigation. The Route 8 rest stop was known as a cruising area for people seeking clandestine homosexual liaisons. They were reluctant to talk to police about what they might have seen.

Also, Andrews had an extensive criminal record — 10 convictions that included six burglaries, assault with a weapon and assignation to commit prostitution. He used four aliases and was arrested in several states, including California, Kansas, Florida and Tennessee. Andrews also had spent some time in a mental hospital.

This article mentions an unnamed victim found in Georgia in July of 1983. He was found wearing a swimsuit and had been shot multiple times. It's unclear if he was ever identified.

In March 1994 state police in Maryland contacted Houseknecht about a murder in which the victim was castrated, he said.
