Found Deceased UT - Paul Swenson, 30, American Fork, 27 July 2017

  • #321
Christensen said police believe their best bet in cracking the case is to track down who owns the items in the SUV. Police have worked to recover fingerprints and DNA from the vehicle, he said, and are awaiting results.*

“That‘s our best [lead] we’ve got right now,” Christensen of the SUV and belongings.*

Police continue to track Swenson’s phone and credit cards, but there’s no sign that they have been used.*

Meanwhile, tips from around the Salt Lake City region — and around the country — continue to pour into the department daily, Christensen said. The detectives are working to follow up on many of them, he said, pulling video surveillance footage from various places where people say they have seen Swenson.*

Investigators also warily keep an eye on Facebook and other social media, where tips and theories on Swenson’s disappearance spread. Christensen said many posts are so outlandish that they are easy to*”skim over.” And police are frequently tamping down rumors arising from the online chatter, like when reporters called last weekend, asking whether Swenson’s body had been found.*

But police feel they can’t ignore the multiple Facebook pages dedicated to the search altogether: There could be a useful piece of information here and there, considering the widespread participation.*

A primary*”Bring Paul Home”*page has about 15,000 followers — but there are about a dozen other public and private Facebook pages also dedicated to the mystery, from a so-called*”Uncensored Discussion” page that has 16,000 members, to a page with 52 members called*”Where in the World is Paul Swenson?”*

Swenson’s family, too, has been communicating about the case over social media, with his mother and brother writing lengthy Facebook posts about his disappearance in recent days. His wife, Ashlee Swenson, is a blogger with more than 50,000 followers on Instagram. She has been posting about him daily.

Christensen said he can’t recall an American Fork police investigation quite like this one.

I have so many questions about this whole thing.

Was it states what he was rambling about? Were the police called immediately after he left? It is reported that he was rambling and a little out of sorts. That was a pretty dangerous state of mind to be in for him and others.

Why was all his property sold before he left?

Has any of his computers etc. been checked for ideas on where he could be etc.

It doesn't sound like anything like that has been done. The phone and accounts have been. There is a huge important chunk missing.

I edited my post as it referenced SM. Just to be safe. Although they are referenced in the latest reports.

Pretty sure the blog and social media are off limits for this forum...

Totally off topic but my dad is BP too and when I've told people stories like this they never believe me and when someone else shares a similar story it makes me feel less alone on this planet sooooo (((hugs)))

The only part is.. those items more than likely would have been used. Otherwise with tags, police would have been able to track. Also he had sold big ticket items, there is a plan for that. It is written about the plan. You may need to dig a bit.

I wish someone who hasn't been as vocal in his family would change course a bit. Everything is so tied in a neat little bow between both families. If, someone could try another way of approaching this. MAYBE, he would at least communicate. I'm not sure why I think this. IF (I believe it is) is marital related, maybe he feels a little scared that he will be betrayed. Everything is how close they all are now, etc. Maybe, he doesn't want that right now. He could need someone who he feels will see his side of things. I have had those thoughts myself. The families mean well, but if they truly have no idea what happened ...

I believe they have an idea, and maybe the solution is his FAMILY. Not necessarily including the other side. Sounds crazy, but you never know. He may feel they are taking her side and he doesn't want that anymore. Just grasping at straws here.

Man, Utah is home to some of the strangest disappearances and they usually seem to be on one's own free will. As mentioned before this is eerily similar to Steven Koecher's 2009 disappearance. Money troubles, yes, but also a member of LDS I believe and very unusual circumstances that put him in a strange area.

I wonder if these gentleman have just simply said 'F it' and are halfway across the country sitting on a beach somewhere in like Myrtle Beach. Only if they are ever found, they can claim amnesia or a psychotic breakdown/disorder.

I mean, were they escaping their families, the religion or maybe both?

I totally agree I don't remember another case like this one.
Not just American Fork but Utah in general. I can think of a few outside of Utah... but not within the state.
The fact that it's still getting media attention is part of the reason people are staying interested.
The dozen facebook pages are definitely a new thing with an adult man being missing.
It's just taken off and gotten a mind of it's own like nothing I've ever seen before.
I certainly hope there are answers and not continuing questions in a few years.

I am not new to the forum but I couldn't remember my user name and password so had to create a new one. I am so perplexed about Paul's disappearance and I have a couple of questions. We knew that he had an appointment the day he went missing, I've read that he did show up for it and didn't show up, which is it? I've also read that he had another appointment that day, does anyone know where or what this was for? I'm not pointing fingers at anyone but I'm a manic depressive and an alcoholic, my significant other wouldn't let me out of his sight if I claimed to have to go see a doctor if I was acting not normal, how come AS didn't go to the doctor appointment if he was acting strangely? I also read that PS is of Mormon religion and part of LDS, I have never seen an actual link to that, this dude has some serious ink and I don't think the Mormon church agrees with this, I can also access his fb page witch people said that he removed. I really hope that this guy is hiding out somewhere, blasting your husband in the public can do some major damage. Please let your family know that you are safe Paul, things can always be changed, your daughter and family need you.

People have said things to me like... "that doesn't sound like bipolar disorder" or "are you sure she's not schizophrenic", etc. The majority of people don't have a clue what BD looks like in real life. They usually picture a person with moods that rapidly shift from happy to sad to angry within minutes or they picture someone who is chronically depressed. While that may be true for a few, the majority of people with BD aren't like that.

My mom has more manic episodes than depressed episodes, and each episode will last for weeks (if not months) at a time. They also follow a pattern. She usually has a manic episode every five years like clockwork. It typically ends in a mental health facility after a two-three week stay. Then, she might have a minor episode of depression that lasts a few weeks before her mood evens out and she's back to her old self. (My mom is diligent about taking her meds, so I don't know how much worse these episodes would be if she wasn't med compliant).

People usually fail to realize that a manic episode can keep someone awake for days (or weeks) at a time. The brain can only function for so long without sleep before it starts going haywire.

The time periods when my mother has been manic have been the worst times of my life. It's so scary and heartbreaking to watch someone you love become this unpredictable person you don't recognize. You just want to shake them until they snap out of it, but you know it doesn't work that way. You feel so helpless. No one can truly understand what that's like until they've lived through it.

It's rough, so I know exactly what you mean.

And I agree, yes, is someone is suffering from mania it isn't uncommon at all for those episodes to start with unplanned and often strange purchases.

To add, IMO a person with a disorder that causes psychosis can be VERY good at lying and keeping secrets from their family. I'm not saying this in direct relation to this case but just in general.

YES! Good point. My mom has been deep in the throes of psychosis before yet able to act as if she's perfectly normal in front of her doctor just long enough to convince them she was fine. It's the strangest thing. She will also have brief moments when she recognizes that her behavior and thoughts aren't normal. She often expresses that "something is wrong" but can't quite grasp what it is exactly. Those times are actually the worst for me because I can't imagine how scary it must be for her to know that her thoughts aren't based in reality but can't do anything to control them.

So, it's possible that both reports are true---that he appeared to be acting normal and he appeared to be saying/doing odd things.

I guess we are lucky that my family members have much more clearly defined episodes.
They go from normal to psychosis and it's very obvious.
I can't imagine if it was not so clear, that would be even scarier.

Man I hope Paul is okay somewhere....

I don't really find anything all that interesting on that page, it's pretty much all that we've been talking about here and all that spew is just speculation.
Ok my bad, there were some things that were new to me. Maybe I just missed them here. I follow a lot of cases on here so I'm usually speed-reading.

I remember someone saying that he had contacted someone but I don't think it was clarified to whom, do we even know if this is true? I wonder if this is why the searches for him were called off?

The family has denied any contact has been made from him. Also, I don't think that the police would continue to have people working on this full time if he had called the family to say he just left. People are making such a big deal about the family "calling off" the search, but I think that they did the right thing. I think that after a week, and after exhausting all the leads they had, they were likely advised (by someone who knows what they are doing) that they were wasting time and resources. Hard to keep sending people out to look if you don't know where else to look. Also, imo the go find me has been so blown out of proportion. As someone who was following this case from early on, there were many MANY people on Facebook that asked for someone to set up a 🤬🤬🤬 account so they could donate since they were so far away and couldn't help any other way. So much drama has taken over this case. I hope the family gets some closure soon.

If I recall correctly, either PS' brother Stephen, or his father addressed this specific claim that PS had made contact with the family (or anyone for that matter)! Again, if I recall correctly, it said he had not made contact & they had heard NOTHING from him at all.

I'll have to see if I can find that post!! Will edit to add when/if I find it!! :)

This isn't the statement I was originally looking for, but, it does address the question. :)
