UT - Sierra Newbold, 6, abducted & murdered, West Jordan, 26 June 2012 *Arrest*

  • #501
Did this monster live with his wife and child? Had he been home since he murdered Sierra? Or was he on the run so to speak like someone else suggested?

So he has been locked up since the 29th while they were waiting for the DNA/forensic test results?

It just makes me sick that someone can walk into someone's house in the middle of the night and take their child and do these horrific things. I make sure all of my windows are locked at night and I have been looking under beds before we go to sleep because a psycho creep like this could even come in during the day while windows are open (summer) and hide and wait.

I think I am going to look into window alarms or something. I don't want anything that would pose a fire hazard. This is sickening.

Do these home surveillance systems have audio usually? I guess we also need to teach our kids to kick and scream and fight back. How come no one heard them? I just wish this could have been prevented. That poor family.

Home surveillance - it depends how extreme you go. As I've mentioned on this thread earlier, a friend had top quality installed and you could hear a field mouse sneezing 100 metres away.

As far as window alarms etc - this guy entered through a sliding door, which are renowned for being easy to break into. A simple length of wood inserted into the door when shut will make it impossible to open, but most people do not realise this, or get complacent and don't always use it.

Locked doors and windows can make a massive difference as to whether you are picked for a crime, or not. Ask any LE department...there are easy and cheap ways to increase your home security.

Further, it remains (depsite the stranger danger hysteria) a fact that this sort of abduction is extremely rare, and care also has to be taken that the occupants can get out of a house, for example in a fire. Many, many more children die trapped in house fires than by the hand of a stranger.

I do know the alarm system operator can listen to what is going on in a home should the security system be breeched. I accidentally sat ours off one time and within 40 seconds she was on the intercom talking and asking me who I was and for my password. Had I not answered nor knew the password she would have kept the intercom open to detect any voices/noises inside until the police arrived.

We installed a glass door with the french window panes a couple of years ago. I love it and feel very safe. We have shatter and forced door entry sensors on all of our doors and windows.

I hate iron bars and think they are nothing but a fire trap.

In my surrounding area in the past two or three years home invasions have risen dramatically. So it isnt just about protecting children from stranger pedophiles but also about protecting the entire family against home invasions. Some in my area the victims have ended in death or great bodlly injury, and even rape of one of the occupants. There have been cases where a child was molested too by the home invaders while inside the home.

As I have said before with the countless cases I seem to read about lately of pedophiles trying to kidnap children... I think more home invasions with the purpose to kidnap children will also be on the rise. It seems to me that the stranger pedo is getting bolder and bolder.

Statistics do absolutely no good when it comes to each individual child subjected to what Sierra and others had to endure before their deaths. While it is still lower in comparison to how many children wind up murdered by a bio parent.........it does happen as it happened here and other cases and it will happen again in the future. We cant stick our head in the sand and think 'oh its rare so it wont ever happen to my child' for it can happen to any child and has and will again. It matters not if the family lived in the finest home or one who lived in a mobile home. When pedos select a target or targets they do not discriminate. They will do what is necessary to kidnap the child or children.

We now know just how quickly a child can be taken from their homes and no one knows a thing until it is way too late for the kidnapped child or the family that loves them.

IMO

I have 2 ideas maybe you folks could comment on:
1) It seems to me everyone ought to have wrought-iron gaurds on thier windows & doors. Like not just if you live in LA or the Bronx. They don't have to be painted black, you can paint them to match your house.

What if there's a fire? Not good. :(

Thank you for posting that but I wish I hadn't read it. This is one of those cases where I got so excited to see "ARREST" in the thread title and now that I have caught up on reading I feel so disgusted and sad, it's almost worse. Somehow, when you don't know who did it or what exactly happened, you can convince yourself of all kinds of things like "Maybe it happened so fast, she didn't suffer." Nope, not with this one, this is the worst of the worst. I hope this guy fries. Oh, and my 7 year-old is going to sleep with me tonight.

Very well said. I know exactly how you feel.

If only there was a way to take all that happened away. All we have is that little Sierra is no longer suffering.

I see I'm late to the game in hearing this wonderful news(and in light of the circumstances this is the most wonderful that we could hope at this point).. Just checking phone and got Marc Klaas tweet sent out from earlier:

This case is a perfect example of why the public should demand every arrestee gives a compulsory DNA test...not that HIS DNA caught him (that we know of) but he would have left some trace in Sierra's house, or body, that would have caught him IMMEDIATELY as he already had a record.

Could also work as a deterrent as well...offenders will think twice if they know their DNA is already on record.

JMO.

I agree! This monster had been arrested 4 times in the past year for various crimes and it is not unusual for the severity of crimes to increase over time. With DNA on record the success rate of solving crimes would increase significantly. I do believe in privacy, but in my book if you choose to break the law you lose that right.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. For the bedrooms, they make ones you can open from the inside in case of fire. I had an accordion-style one on my fire escape when I was a kid in the bronx. It had a tiny key and a rusty lock, I remember my mom making me practice with it when I was little. Those absolutley are fire traps. The new ones have to have a FDNY approved large panic button, here's an example:

My ex gf lived in a ground floor apt in Washington Heights, she had one similar to that in her bedroom, takes less than 1 second to open.

You know, I agree that we need to be proactive about safety but the idea of putting bars on my windows just irks me. I don't want to put bars on my windows, I was these 🤬🤬🤬's to stop breaking into houses and stealing babies out of them. I want someone who is arrested and/ or convicted of any sex crimes or crimes against children to go away FOREVER and not be let out to do it again.

I know you are just trying to be helpful so please don't think this rant is directed at you. I agree that we all need to lock our doors and protect ourselves. I just wish we didn't have to.

HE WAS SITTING NEXT TO THEM IN CHURCH? :furious:

  • #513
I still don't understand why Sierra and not her sister... especially since they DID sleep in the same room.

No drastic age difference... did he even KNOW which one he took? Did he even CARE?

  • #514
Do we know if this guy has a vehicle and does any "traveling"? (or rather, DID any traveling...)

As if they could possibly feel more violated. To know that this horrible person sat next to you in your place of worship where you should always be safe. This poor family.

  • #516
Maybe sat next to them, and took notice of Sierra or her sister, then followed them home so he could return later?

ETA: WAIT! Don't LDS temples mail out "stake maps" or "ward maps" or something? A map of the church's local area, with all the parishoner's residences highlighted, like for disater preparedness or programs that take place outside the church? Any Mormons here?

Sigh. I haven't been able to post here since the arrest because there are simply no words. The arrest for me made the horrible crime against Sierra more palpable, because now the animal that perpetrated it has a disgusting, vile face. When I think of what that poor tiny girl must have endured I can do nothing but weep, hug my children tightly and pray. I am amazed that at this horrible time, the Newbold family has shown such strength and grace towards the family of the animal that murdered their baby. I continue to keep them in my prayers. I hope that their own personal angel, Sierra, is giving them much comfort, peace, strength and hope.

I doubt it. He just wanted something tiny and innocent to destroy. I hope Sierra's sister doesn't feel survivor guilt that she was the lucky one.

It could have merely been a matter of who was closer to the door...

He last saw Black three weeks ago, at church.

"He was sitting in church, next to the Newbolds."

But he said Black disappeared, which wasn't unusual.

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=212...old-murder-stunned-by-arrest&s_cid=featured-1

Where does it say this? I read the article and the man said
"He wasn't violent. That's what I can't figure out," he said. "We've got tons of kids here. And I can't figure why is the reason he picked out the Newbold girl. Maybe he sat by her in church."
BBM

It has been said he was not a member of the church but had gone to some of the activites in the past.
His wife and children are active in their LDS ward and attend church services with the Newbold family. Although police said Black attended the same church, the bishop of the ward said Black is not LDS and had only attended a few church functions over the years.

So the previous post is not accurate. I understand reading quickly, but we need to quote accurately as IMO this fuels the already burning fire. Which BTW it completely appropriate! :furious: Just makes me sick!

Peace for the Newbold family.:rose:
