They're searching somewhere around B and C.

In the phone message we've heard about, he said he was west of D.

It's not just you.
He said he was west of Granite Mountain (D), walking with his shirt tied around his feet because he lost his flipflops. The car was found off-road in a gully like an ATV trail. We don't know if it was really out of gas. You'd think he'd have said "I ran off the road". :banghead:

I posted this as a reply in the other thread, but think it belongs here, too:

I think that article is stretching for connections. We know that Dugway (Utah) isn't part of Northern Nevada.

Bushling's vehicle was found more than 100 miles from I-80. The roads Bushling would have travelled on, after leaving Dugway's main gate, were dirt roads. Not many long-haul truckers out there. None, actually. Not on that particular route.

Even IF Bushling had driven up to I-80 from Dugway, why would the "mysterious Nevada I-80 serial killer" take the car back to Dugway and then 64 more miles out into the desert?

It's articles like that, that make me :banghead:

I thought so too Laytonian. Couldn't figure out exactly how Joseph's name would even be included in that article but I'm glad it was because it just gives him more exposure. JMHO.

The family is reporting on FB that DNA is being done on a pair of underwear found during a search.

One of my staff members submitted him to NamUs shortly after missing. I will inquire as to why it is not posted yet. Keep in mind, when we enter a missing ...while the public may not see it...coroners, medical examiners and police do have access to those entered even if not seen by the public. The reason they may not be seen by the public may be due to the PD not approving all info or change of jurisdiction, etc. Thanks for posting this so that I may look into it. Hugs, Cynthia

I know that the belief and the hope out there is that the remains found this week in Utah are Susan; however, what IF Joseph Bushling met with foul play? What IF ... These remains could also have the possibility of being him?

Either way, some family will have some amount of closure with the remains being found. Prayers going out for all missing persons!

I just can't help but think that the Army believes this to be a voluntary disappearance and thus their 'tepid' response.

Admittedly, I am leaning in that direction as well. MOO

I don't believe it was a voluntary disappearance...I just believe there needs to be more searches conducted. It is a lot of terrain to cover

I guess I do not see any evidence that would lead them to a voluntary disappearance. I wish that they would have tried harder to locate him. I do not understand why missing me get less attention than missing women. Praying that they find him.

The military lists him as a deserter. His family believes he lost his way and died in the desert.

First the army listed Joseph as AWOL, now a deserter. Kevin says, "I think it is horrible he's listed as a deserter and a federal fugitive from justice."

That status means Specialist Bushling would be arrested by the FBI if found alive; if found dead he wouldn't receive a military funeral and his family would not get his benefits, unless he died due to foul play.

The Army says although the terms "AWOL" and "deserter" have bad reputations, those are the only status options that fit the situation.

Sorry if this has already been looked at but...There is another larger mountain called Granite Peak at Latitude: 40.1279955 Longitude: -113.2713696 If he had been talking about that mountain he would have been accurate about his car being west of that...well, southwest.

While working on my own map I ran across this one done by a Kirby Sanders on Facebook. I think Bushling may have taken off post back roads instead of the ones on this map that appear to be withing the fence line(not sure, as I have not been to this army base). This map shows the exact coordinates of the car and baseball cap. I have verified the car's coordinates but not the hat's. I may post my map sometime later, for now here is this one...

A search planned for March 24-25 is being coordinated by the Minnesota-based Jon Francis Foundation, named for a hiker whose body was found by searchers in the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho a year after he summited Grand Mogul but did not return.

The missing soldier's parents plan to be in Utah for the upcoming search.
Kevin Bushling said he has been selling personal belongings to help cover expenses related to searches and travel to Utah.

"Right now material things just don't have a meaning to me," he said on Friday.
"Some of the things I've sold I was planning on handing to my grandchildren, but I'm not going to have any, so what's the point of keeping them?"
