OK well, we did not really learn anything new except a few new facts about the families' names, and what they are thinking and feeling. I was hoping that Josh would be announced as arrested!! (fat chance right now). I see how hurt the father is - he reminds me of my own Dad and how he would react if it was me that was missing. Made me tear up, seeing how helpless he looked. The spokesperson was quite composed, and a good rep for the family. I think they cannot say exactly how they feel on TV, got to be somewhat cautious.
I don't think the GP's have much say in where the children go as long as Josh remains free. :waitasec:

Snipped/bolded by me:

I think what happened to mess up his plan was family calling police so soon. I think he planned this, and I think he told the sledding story with a purpose.. he intended it to be his alibi... he goes sledding while his wife is napping and finds her missing when he gets home. When he got the phone calls from people saying his wife was missing and they had called the cops he 1) had to drive back from wherever he disposed of his body 2) had to quick change his story.

I don't understand... Sledding would be his alibi? He left for sledding at 5:30 PM Sunday night. If sledding was going to be his alibi and she would have been missing when he returned that evening, why would he not report her missing til the late the next day? I guess I just don't understand why he would wait til the next day after both of them had to be at work to report her.

I think I'm misunderstanding/overlooking part of this theory. Not trying to knock it, just don't think I'm getting it. No matter which theory the closest (and maybe none of them are) Susan's fate doesn't change. :(

With all due respect, what would you suggest they do?

Yes, there is nothing that they can physically do about it, but I sure wouldnt call him a good father and that I had no worries in the Presser. I would just say that they are with the Aunt and Uncle and leave it at that.

  • #665
What a loving family Susan came from!!

  • #666
I think the Dad wants to think the grandchildren are safe with Josh, so that's what he must say aloud. IMOO I would be worried about suicide/homicide with Josh and children. But don't see what can be done. Josh's options are growing smaller and he still sees the kids. Hope all will be well. I just do not see Josh giving it up and admitting what happened.

  • #667
There is no way, no way that I would let a POI in my daughters disappearance be anyway near my grandkids. JP a good father?!??! Riiight. A good father doesnt take a parent away from their kids. A good father wouldn't take the kids out in the cold late at night. A good father would provide emotionally, financially, spiritually for his family. if JP did this he is NOT a good father.

IMO JP probably planned a family style murder-suicide and couldnt go thru with it.

The grandparents or any of the family members just can't go and knock on the door of where Josh's is living and ask for the children. If anything, they would have to go through the family court system to try and fight for the children.

Right now the children are with Josh's sister and her hubby, and they will keep a close eye on the children. Chances are IF Josh gets arrested, the children might end up with Josh's sister and her hubby UNLESS there are provisions should both parents no longer be alive.

Prior to Susan's disappearance, Josh may not have been a model father, and with Susan's concern for her children he more then likely NEVER took the children out in the middle of the winter to go camping.

However, something happened that night to Susan which clearly gave her NO control of the situation and Josh took off.

What a loving family Susan came from!!

It is the strength and love of her family that tells me that Susan would have left Josh eventually. Controlling men HATE when their little woman has a supportive family structure. And for Susan's part, she grew up with a man who provided a good ideal for her future husband. Once she realized that her husband wasn't treating her the way that her own father would, she knew she couldn't be with him forever. MOO, but that's all I got.

UPDATED: Family of missing Utah mom speaks out on husband
December 17th, 2009 @ 3:40pm
<snipped>
The family of a Utah mother who has been missing for 10 days says they are saddened but not surprised that her husband has been named a person of interest in the investigation.

At a press conference Thursday in Puyallup, Wash., Shelby Gifford, a spokeswoman for Susan Powell's family, said Susan Powell is an excellent mother and would not have allowed her children to leave the home during the night in possibly dangerous conditions.

West Valley police say the son of a missing woman told them they went camping the night Susan Powell disappeared. It backs up a claim by Powell's husband that he took his two children camping in Tooele County and they slept in the family's van.

West Valley City police Capt. Tom McLachlan said police are analyzing the boy's comments that came out of an interview at a local Children's Justice Center. They haven't been able to thoroughly check the remote area along the Pony Express Trail where Powell said they stayed, but he said there was no obvious of camping activity.

Missing woman's family: Midnight camping trip a 'red flag'
Story Published: Dec 17, 2009 at 1:43 PM PST

Family spokesman Shelby Gifford said at a news conference that Susan would never have allowed her two young sons to go camping in subfreezing weather after midnight, as her husband did on Dec. 7, the day she disappeared.

But Josh Powell has been uncooperative in providing any details that might explain what happened to his wife, Black said.

Among other things, Josh Powell hasn't specified where he went camping or where he was all day on Dec. 7, he said.

"That would be awesome if he would be willing to cooperate on that level and take us to his camp site," Black said.

Family Member Says Arrest May be Possible for Husband of Susan Powell
2:09 p.m. EST, December 17, 2009

After his initial interview with police, Powell retained a high-profile attorney, Scott Williams. Powell was scheduled to meet with police on Monday, but did not attend the meeting on the advice of his attorney. Powell met with detectives on Tuesday, and answered questions described as "very basic." Detectives say they are not ruling out the possibility of foul play, but they also say Susan Powell may have left at her own will. Family members say leaving her sons behind, however, would be out of character for Susan. A court order required DNA samples to be collected from Josh Powell and other family members.

Updates from the news conference as it happened:

Family does not believe Susan Powell would have left her sons and not contacted her family in Puyallup.

She said that though they do not have all the facts, they trust the West Valley police Department, which has 20 detectives on the case, to do all the right actions.

She further said that the famly is holding a press conference to provide information, discuss family reaction, keep the search in the public eye and to answer questions.

Children are splitting time with their father and an aunt and uncle in Utah.

"Every lead we've been offered so far would leave us to believe this is out of character (for Susan) and thus suspect foul play is involved," West Valley City Asst. Police Chief Craig Black said Wednesday.

Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, a defense attorney who often defends high-profile clients, described the DNA testing as routine in such cases.

Williams disputed allegations made by police that his client had been uncooperative.

"Despite our continued invitation to be contacted with questions we received no contact from the police today (Wednesday) and as to the nature of prior information, we have answered all questions posed to us since Monday morning," he said. "Josh continues to favor attention on finding Susan and has been cooperating and providing information to that end."

Black reiterated that Josh Powell has given them little information of value.

I think that Josh after whatever happened out of panick may have thought it was Saturday instead of Sunday, just because of what happens to one's mind after a traumatic event. I just can't see him taking that chance given both had to work on Monday...but I certainly can be wrong just an observation on my part.
He would have to know people would call right away to find out where they were ??
He is not the brightest bulb in the pack...
Prayers for Susan and her family....

I agree 100%. I was married to a VERY controlling (also verbally and physically abusive) jerk. From the day we were married till the day I divorced him he would do anything he could to not be around my family and keep me away as well... because god for bid one day I would wake up and realize I came from better and would realize I deserved better and there was life beyond what I had been accustomed to.

They also hate it when you have supportive friends... mine actually saw that as more than a threat than my family. Friends tend to be more honest with their opinions than family members who might be a little bit more in the dark.

With all due respect, what would you suggest they do?

I'd show up at the house to visit the kids, wearing a wire and secretly videotaping, if at all possible. Let Josh or his family turn me away on camera for all the world to see, while I, a loving grandparent, am prevented from holding and comforting my grandchildren, who are suddenly without their mother, my daughter.

I would have had the best lawyer I could afford already working on getting those babies away from their father the second he gets arrested. I would not be expressing my confidence in his parenting skills, since I obviously was very wrong to have assumed that he was not a danger to Susan, who is missing and probably dead, thanks to Josh.

Susan's dad is understandably in shock, and not thinking clearly at this most stressful time. I sympathize with his desperate need to believe that his grandchildren are safe where they are, but he is clearly and understandably in denial of the seriousness of Josh's instability.

I hope that someone close to the family can convince them to do whatever it takes to protect those children from the man who has done something horrible to their mother and does not want her to be found!

Is Ambien the same as Zopiclone? Itake it forsleep,if I use morethan one, I lose the evening, can be doing things with no awareness. Also, crushed into food it would cause a hideous taste in the mouth, really bitter-enough to make you sick.
I have no probs with Jovanna and the tangled yarn, thats what fibre friends are for and I have many of all ages.

This story is upsetting me,more than the Peter Tobin case in the UK.
I so want this vibrant young mum to be found, and I wish that her children are not with their father without close supervision.
Praying that she will be found and that justice will prevail:furious:

Ambien is Zolpidem Tartrate. Some interesting facts about Ambien, which I will highlight in bold the ones that make me feel it could be relevant.

17.2 Sleep-driving and other complex behaviors
There have been reports of people getting out of bed after taking a sedative-hypnotic and driving their cars while not fully awake, often with no memory of the event. If a patient experiences such an episode, it should be reported to his or her doctor immediately, since "sleep-driving" can be dangerous. This behavior is more likely to occur when Ambien CR is taken with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants [see Warnings and Precautions (5.3)]. Other complex behaviors (e.g., preparing and eating food, making phone calls, or having sex) have been reported in patients who are not fully awake after taking a sedative-hypnotic. As with "sleep-driving", patients usually do not remember these events.
In addition, patients should be advised to report all concomitant medications to the prescriber. Patients should be instructed to report events such as "sleep-driving" and other complex behaviors immediately to the prescriber.

17.3 Administration instructions
Patients should be counseled to take Ambien right before they get into bed and only when they are able to stay in bed a full night (7–8 hours) before being active again. Ambien CR tablets should not be crushed, divided, or chewed, and should not be taken with or immediately after a meal. Advise patients NOT to take Ambien CR when drinking alcohol.

http://products.sanofi-aventis.us/ambien_cr/ambiencr.html#section-17.4

There are many things about Ambien that make me feel it could be relevant, but those are two of the strongest reasons. IMO, pancakes would be the perfect food to conceal crushed pills. Any powdery chunks could be mistaken for batter that wasn't completely mixed. Any bitter taste would surely be drowned out with syrup.

I'm still praying for Susan and most of all for her children. They need their mama.
I'll be flying into Salt Lake City Sunday night to spend my birthday and Christmas with my family. My 8 month old son will be meeting them for the first time. I REALLY hope they have found Susan (Hopefully alive) by then. I've been SO busy trying to get ready for my trip, I really haven't been able to keep up with these threads. Can anyone tell me if there have been any organized searches? Or if there are plans for any?
I'd like to try to participate while I'm in town next week if I can find the time.

Also, does anyone know if the family has contacted Texas Equusearch?

  • #678
It was interesting to hear Shelby state that Susan is a devoted mother, one of the best mothers, and how she would never have allowed her boys to go camping in subzero weather. It makes me think the family believes Susan was already incapacitated when Josh took the children camping.

Sorry to be graphic, but an 'over my dead body' scenario.

Forensic police searching Susan Powell's home; family 'not surprised' suspicion on husband
News conference » Family 'saddened' that Joshua Powell is now a 'person of interest.'
Updated: 12/17/2009 03:50:21 PM MST

Just as Susan Powell's family on Thursday said they are not surprised that police have called her husband, Joshua Powell, a person of interest in her disappearance, forensic teams were at the Powell family home running tests.

West Valley City officers had the home blocked off while two forensic trucks and forensic officers looked for clues in the house. They began the search about the same time Susan Powell's family held a news conference in Puyallup, Wash.
