$10K Reward In Utah Woman's Disappearance; Husband In Puyallup
Posted: 6:59 am PST December 21, 2009

Her husband, who is considered a person of interest in her disappearance, was among more than 60 people who attended a vigil for her Sunday night in her parents' hometown in Puyallup.

Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, said earlier in the day that Powell had left Utah with the couple's two young sons. Williams told The Associated Press in a text message that his client went to his father's house in Washington state for the holidays with his sons.

Powell is expected to stay in the state with his family through Christmas.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Gary Horcher said Powell came toward the end of the vigil, kept his distance from Susan's family and refused to speak to reporters.

Horcher said Powell's presence at the vigil confused Susan's family, who said they hadn't heard from Powell since he hired an attorney.

"We have had no contact with him. We don't know his plans. I didn't know he was coming," said Susan's father, Chuck Cox.

Husband of missing West Valley woman has left Utah

Friend and fellow member of the Powells' LDS ward, John Hellewell, said he talked to Josh Powell about 30 minutes before a pair of candlelight vigils held by friends and family members in Washington and Utah to pray for the safe return of their "beloved Susan" began Sunday night.

"He was wanting details about the vigil in Washington — when and where it was," said Hellewell, 32, who was a home teacher with Josh Powell before Powell stopped attending church two years ago.

But many questioned why Josh Powell would leave for Washington during the height of the police investigation.

"One of the biggest problems Susan had was that (Josh) talked to his dad for hours, more than he talked to her," said Tim Peterson, a friend and member of the Powells' ward who has been vocal in the past about Josh Powell and once called police on him. "And now guess where he's at. He hasn't been formally charged, but he's not that far from the border to Canada now."

Hellewell said he knew Josh struggled with pressure from his family, especially his dad, Stephen Powell, about church.

"His dad is very against the church," Hellewell said. "His dad is always sending him anti-Mormon literature and I've heard stories from Josh and Susan that (Josh's) dad was always trying to break up their marriage."

Reward offered for information on Susan Powell

An anonymous donor is offering a reward of $10,000 for original information that results in Susan Powell being found.

Josh Powell left Utah this weekend with his two young boys to spend the holidays in Washington. He attended the rainy vigil in Puyallup, as did Susan's grandparents, parents and siblings. Josh Powell did not speak to reporters gathered at the event.

He stood in a downpour surrounded by a tight group of supporters who shielded him from the media with umbrellas. His 4-year-old son, Charlie, accompanied him at the vigil and held a candle as many of Susan's friends and families stared at Josh in surprise, the Associated Press reported.

John Hellewell who is a neighbor of the Powell's found out about the trip Sunday when Josh called him. His first concern was to find someone to "pet sit" his birds. "He just called me and said, 'I'm here staying at my Dad's house.' He said he was trying to get away from all the media attention," Hellewell said. When asked if he thought it was strange for Powell to leave when the fate of his wife was still unknown, he said, "I don't understand a lot of the things he does. So, it's hard to know what his reasoning was."

West Valley Police say because Powell is not a suspect, he is free to come and go as he pleases. But, Captain Tom McLachlan said his leaving does not help them find his wife. He said, "Distance probably doesn't really matter that much right now. But his public appearance and actions don't put him in a good light."

"We’ve had no contact with Josh. We don’t know what his plans are," said Chuck Cox, Susan's father. "I didn’t know he was going to come up here.”

Powell and his son stood away from the main podium during the proceedings, and afterward remained silent for the most part, often surrounded by a wall of umbrellas erected by family friends.

Neither Cox nor Powell approached each other during the vigil, although two other relatives did talk to Josh in order to speak with the couple's son, family friends said.

Cox told KING-5 he would not attempt to speak with his son-in-law “unless he contacts me. I might call to ask if we can see the children or something. [But] there’s just too many things out there and … hopefully now that he’s back here around his parents, his dad, now that he has representation, maybe he’ll be comfortable enough that he’ll come forward with some verifiable story.”

Husband of missing WVC woman attends Washington vigil

Friends who held a vigil last night at an LDS Chapel say they are shocked that he would leave the state instead of staying here trying to help find his wife.

Joshua Powell stood with his son, 4-year-old Charlie, in a chilly downpour Sunday night with dozens of others at the candle-lit vigil and spoke briefly with Susan's sister Denise. Reports say she asked how he and the boys are doing and asked Josh if he would talk to her about the recent events. She says he agreed to talk to her later.

Susan's parents walked right past Josh and didn't bother to talk to him. Susans father says his story just isn't adding up.

Husband of missing Utah mother attends Wash. vigil

Susan's husband Josh suddenly left Utah over the weekend. Although he's been called a person of interest by police, Josh Powell is legally free to leave the state.

He told friends he just wanted to get away from the media attention, but he missed an outpouring of support here for his missing wife.

Josh Powell evidently left Utah either Friday or Saturday and traveled to Washington to stay with his father. Friday and Sunday, a KSL news camera captured scenes of large items being removed from his home by friends or relatives.

"I don't know what his motives are. Maybe he just wanted to be with his family for a while but that was surprising to me," Kiirsi Hellewell said. "His story is already strange. It's already something that's hard to believe, so the whole circumstances around that are strange."

Police said his distance from Utah will make it more difficult to speak with him, but they do not have him under surveillance.

Josh told friends he couldn't handle all of the attention he's had since Susan's disappearance.

Neighbor John Hellewell said, "He just told me he needed to get away from all the press and publicity. He wants to keep his kids away from it."

The media attention followed Josh to Washington. Josh attended a vigil for Susan last night, but he refused to speak with reporters. Susan's parents told reporters they were surprised to see Josh there and believe he knows more about what happened to her than he has told police.

Over the weekend, our photographers captured friends or family members moving large items out of the Powell home in West Valley. Friends say Josh told them he lost his job as a computer programmer for a trucking and warehouse company, and is no longer going to be able to pay his house payment.

There's no word on when he will be coming back to Utah, but police say they would like to interview him again soon.

McLachlan said, "Our contact, as far as the police department goes, has been limited by his association with his retaining an attorney, so that slows things down. It delays things."

Joshua Powell's dad: Son is being 'vilified'
Missing woman » Police say husband went to Washington state.

"The whole thing has just turned into a vilification of Josh and it will turn into a vilification of me, my ex-wife and my other kids," said Steven Powell, who spoke to The Salt Lake Tribune briefly through the partially open front door of his home Sunday.

"I'm not making any statement because it doesn't matter how benign it is or how supportive it is. Somebody will twist it around."

On Friday, the Coxes told The Salt Lake Tribune that Steven Powell isn't actively helping in the search for their daughter. The Coxes said they've had "issues" with Steven Powell in the past and aren't comfortable being around him.

He told Tribune reporters to "please just go and please do not come back." Asked whether he wants a chance to speak on behalf of Joshua Powell and explain the reasons why he thinks his son has been unfairly vilified, Steven Powell said, "I don't need to explain anything. There is nothing to explain."

"I heard that Joshua (the husband) had arrived," he wrote on the social networking Web site Facebook. "I saw this [sic] brother doing an interview, I couldn't really understand why Josh was there."

Cox wrote that Joshua Powell also brought his 4-year-old son and that he felt it would have been inappropriate for him to barge in on the Powell family. Joshua Powell was under an umbrella in the rain surrounded by family members to keep the media away from him.

"I just hope being here [at the vigil] will encourage Josh to help with the search," Cox said on Facebook.

Joshua Powell isn't the only Utah husband who won't help police solve a mystery.

In 1994, someone shot and killed Kimberly Evans at the mouth of Butterfield Canyon in Herriman. Her husband, Mark B. Evans, submitted to an interview with police shortly after the murder. Detectives grilled him hard. So hard he hasn't spoken to investigators since.

Medwed also said many defense attorneys will advise even innocent clients not to talk. Research has shown police, especially during high profile cases, develop what Medwed called "tunnel vision" where they latch onto once suspect and ignore evidence against others.

"I don't know what motivates people to not talk to police," Park said. "The obvious one is when they're guilty and trying to hide something."

Friends: Susan Powell was poised to leave husband
Disappearance » Police say they're doing DNA testing on evidence and still have leads in the case.
Updated: 12/21/2009 08:17:03 PM MST

A year before she disappeared, Susan Powell told a wide circle of friends she was preparing for the worst if she sought a divorce: that her husband might try to kidnap their sons and break her financially.

She said she had set up a separate bank account, arranged a place to stay if she decided to leave, and had informally written a will, according to friends who requested anonymity because they are not authorized by police to speak about the investigation. And Susan Powell made sure many knew of her preparations.

Susan Powell ultimately decided to stay and work on the relationship after fasting and praying.

On Monday, there was no sign of an eminent break in what is still being called a missing persons case. Police said they were waiting for results from the state crime lab, which is testing DNA evidence taken from the couple's home five days ago.

"We're their top priority," said West Valley City Police Chief Thayle "Buzz" Nielsen.

McLachlan said he did not know of any financial motive, such as a life insurance policy, that could give anyone an incentive to harm her.

"We would still dearly love to have an interview with him and have an open request, invitation, whatever you want to call it...for him to do that," said McLachlan.

Police searched the area near Simpson Springs, where Josh said he took his two sons camping, but they found nothing.

Police also want to know more about a 24-hour period where Josh seemed to vanish. Two days after Susan disappeared and the day after police seized his van, FOX 13 has learned Josh rented a car and was not seen for a full day.

Father of Missing Utah Woman's Husband Defends Son
4:50 PM MST, December 21, 2009
<snipped>
"The whole thing has just turned into a vilification of Josh and it will turn into a vilification of me, my ex-wife and my other kids," Steven Powell said through the partially open front door of his home. "I'm not making any statement because it doesn't matter how benign it is or how supportive it is. Somebody will twist it around."

Susan Powell's father, Charles Cox, wrote on a Facebook page for friends and family that he didn't understand why Josh was at the vigil.

"I heard that Joshua (the husband) had arrived," he wrote in the posting. "I saw this (sic) brother doing an interview, I couldn't really understand why Josh was there."

Cox and Josh Powell have barely spoken since Susan Powell was reported missing, although Cox has defended Josh Powell as a good father.

A message left with Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, was not immediately returned Monday.

Susan Powell told friends of fears, struggles before her disappearance
Disappearance » Police say they're doing DNA testing on evidence and still have leads in the case.

"We have an open, standing request, or if you want to call it an invitation, for him to come speak to us," said Capt. Tom McLachlan.

Yet McLachlan said the investigation is "far from a standstill. We have a lot of stuff we're looking at."

Friends said they told her the relationship wasn't healthy and confirm that they encouraged Susan Powell to leave her husband, whom they have described as controlling and emotionally abusive. A friend has said Susan Powell was at one point poised to return to Washington with the aid of her parents.

Joshua Powell, 33, was upset his wife was depositing money into an account he didn't have access to, said friends who added that they encouraged Susan to stand up to him. Family members have said the couple got marital counseling at Susan Powell's urging.

Police ask why Powell drove so far in rental car
Published: Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 9:03 p.m. MST
<snipped>
A car rented by Josh Powell two days after his wife was reported missing was returned just 24 hours later with a lot of miles on it, according to police.

"It looks like there were several hundred miles driven," West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan told the Deseret News.

Investigators do not know where the car was taken or where Josh Powell was during that 24-hour period. There was no GPS data stored in that rental car, said McLachlan, who declined Monday to say from where the vehicle was rented.

Questioning family never easy, but necessary, say police in Susan Powell case
Searches often begin with difficult inquiries at home
Published: Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 9:04 p.m. MST
<snipped>
For nearly two weeks, West Valley police have said they would like more detailed answers from Josh Powell regarding questions they have about his missing wife, Susan Powell.

He has been interviewed three times and submitted to a DNA search warrant. But police say he is still uncooperative, even though Powell and his attorney, Scott Williams, say they are working with authorities.

Investigators would like more specific answers to questions such as exactly where Josh says he went camping with his two young sons the night Susan disappeared. They also have questions about a rental car that was returned 24 hours after Josh rented it, with hundreds of new miles on it.

Ed Smart (Elizabeth Smart's father) said he had dinner with Chuck Cox, Susan Powell's father, when he was in Utah last week, and has spoken to him again on other occasions. He said Cox mostly had questions such as "How do you get through this?" and "What's the most important thing to do?"

"I think he's done everything he can possibly do. It's incredibly painful to the family," Smart said. "They just want to find Susan."

VIDEO: Dad Of Missing Utah Woman Wants 'Credible Story' From Son-In-Law

I just watched that video that omegagal linked -- I think his behavior at the vigil is pretty twisted....did you see Josh's "supporters" encircling him like he needed to be protected?

For crying out loud this was supposed to be a candlelight vigil for Susan & their candles were hidden -- completely ignoriing the symbolism.

Why even bother? (well, except for the fact that he could show Mr. Cox that he could - and would - do whatever he wanted, when he wanted.)
I also noticed either in this video or the other video of last night's Washington vigil, that as soon as the camera starts getting close to the 4 year old's face, Joshy boy starts to put his hand near the child's mouth and then starts to cover it. Eerie.... looks like he wants to control his son from saying anything to the camera man... Anyone else notice that???

IMO it's rude, insensitive and well just plain bizarre for JP to bother attending a vigil organized by his missing wife's family in their church--of which his own father so strenuously disapproves--in his missing wife's father's community, and then neither communicate w her family nor speak to this broken father, nor offer any solace, support, comfort nor reassurance to her family nor afford his FIL any opportunity to hold nor speak w his grandson... honestly it just seems sadistic I mean seriously, what was the point. I think Josh went to the vigil so that he could be "in the know" as to what others were saying, or to prevent anything from being said.

I tell yah, this case is being handled somewhat different than similar disappearances.

For once, there hasn't been any searches.

Police say they don't know where to look.

What? In most cases like this police don't always know where to look, yet they still do.

I hope that at least they checked the garbage pickup in the area, just in case.

No reward for her whereabouts up until now?!

:waitasec:

There was a search of a good size area around the Simpson Springs campground. LE and communities have come to realize that the large organized searches usually do not have a positive result. There is also liability involved, people get hurt and evidence can be destroyed. Personally I think the weather is too dangerous right now, not to mention the avalance danger is at extreme right now.

 • #1,027
The "Pony Express Trail" or even "Simpson Springs" (as if he was being forthright lol) is hardly "narrowing it down" for LE. JP has refused to accompany LE there, even to verify where it was he claims he took the boys camping... so I guess searches under these sort of vague and intentionally misleading circumstances wouldn't be too fruitful... but that's only because JP is being absolutely worthless.

I think LE just squeezed a little harder

They also have questions about a rental car that was returned 24 hours after Josh rented it, with hundreds of new miles on it.

hmmm...wonder if Joshy has already asked his atty if he should fight extradition back to Utah once the arrest warrant is served???

 • #1,030
I agree with Kiki...

there is simply NO way to know where to search...and no reason to search blindly, risking lives in the harsh weather...

when LE has reasonable tips/lead/evidence to search in a given area they do go all out...look at the long long search of the landfill for Lori Hacking

but here Josh could have driven in any direction....look at the radius around where they lived...maybe 100, 150 mile circle...impossible

Josh has the answers...just when will he give them up?? I am just sick that the boys are with him

Angel who Cares...thanks so much for all your hard work, that is a great way for us to be able to find the info/lmedia

and when we feel like:puke:

we can watch Josh in the "blue hat" as he hems, haws and ...

A forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Michael Welner, recently billed $500,000 for evaluating the competency of Brian David Mitchell. He found him competent to face trial. He believes Mitchell suffers from pedophilia, an antisocial personality disorder, psychopathy, malingering (faking an illness to avoid prosecution) and a narcissistic personality disorder. But he does not have a delusional disorder or psychotic mental illness, Welner said.

I think that Scott Williams is on the scene because they know they have enough evidence to lock away or fry Joshy. Interesting that Williams represented the wife, Wanda Barzee. She was not found competent to stand trial. I'd like to know what Dr. Welner has been doing lately and if he's been hanging around SLC lately.

Here's an article about him:
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705349810/Brian-David-Mitchell-stalked-other-girls-doctor-says.html?pg=1

Wow, I just read his Wiki entry. The guy's brilliant....

The Depravity Scale

Dr. Welner has pioneered a multilayered effort to achieve scientific-legal standardization of evil crimes and everyday evil acts. The Depravity Scale research, as it is known, is the first such research to incorporate forensic science, law, and public input; it constitutes the first criminal sentencing research to incorporate public opinion.[12] Through the Depravity Scale research, Dr. Welner has used public web-based surveys to weave public consensus into an evidence-driven Depravity Standard for distinguishing heinous crimes that warrant more severe punishment from those that do not.[13]

Dr. Welner has also devised the WIEEO (Welner Inventory of the Everyday Extreme and Outrageous), a standard for application in clinical psychotherapy to distinguish everyday evil and intent that warrant clinical attention.

So LE has looked at the rental car that Josh took off in for 24 hours. It had HUNDREDS of miles on it? Where did he go? No GPS on it? Too bad. He must have had to get gas somewhere if he went hundreds of miles - got to get security camera video tapes, folks! That may help pinpoint where he placed the body, as I am sure he went back to the scene in that rental car.:waitasec:

<snip> from Angel's link ( http://www.sltrib.com/ci_14042094 )

She said she had set up a separate bank account, arranged a place to stay if she decided to leave, and had informally written a will, according to friends who requested anonymity because they are not authorized by police to speak about the investigation. And Susan Powell made sure many knew of her preparations.

Susan Powell ultimately decided to stay and work on the relationship after fasting and praying.

I *knew* Josh would be pizzed about her having $$ he couldn't get his hands on!! :furious: (Are jerks like this easy to peg or not.)

Susan wrote her own will -- that makes me wanna cry. :(

Guess she really did have some serious threats made.

We're getting more and more details of this relationship and how Susan was trying to deal with it.... It saddens me so much to know she went through all of this.... If Susan was told through fasting and prayer to stay, I want to know why??? Why would a just God let this happen to her.... I'm going to sleep. Hopefully we'll have some real answers soon...

If Susan was killed....the blame lies with her killer....not God. IMO

Well, I don't think a just God gets into the habit of interfering with his children's free agency. Josh Powell apparently exercised his free agency in an evil way. I think a loving Heavenly Father was probably deeply saddened that one his children would make such a decision - especially as it concerns another one of his children.

Fortunately (perhaps unfortunately, for Josh), there will be justice - both temporal, and eternal.

Ok so here is what I was thinking, and trust me, this isn't what I really believe. I am just playing devil's advocate here...

This rental car was during the time that police had the family van in for searching, so that right there would give Josh a plausible excuse for renting the car.

Now my situation is somewhat unique, but I drive a lot and I could easily put at least 200 miles on a car within a 24 hour period. This is because I live somewhat outside of the city, and I play taxi to children as well as working and school.

Does anyone think that Josh could use this type of behavior to explain away mileage? For example, if he still wants to claim dabbling in real estate, he could say I had to drive to such and such to check out a couple of houses. Since I live in Utah, I can tell you that a few trips to south Utah County and back from where Josh lives would easily rack up miles. It is 30-50 miles one way depending on where you are going, and there are residents who make these drives on a daily basis.

Again, this isn't what I really think, but I thought I would throw this out there, because I don't think the rental car will do any good unless LE can tell where it was. Without GPS, my hope in this is fading...

I hope that I am wrong, but is the police dept working of the Susan Powell case from West Valley City, not SLC?

It is heartbreaking that stories like this keep being repeated, and precious lives are changed forever.

Does anyone know if there is any way to tell how far
a vehicle has traveled in recent days or weeks? I do hope they did a thorough check of his van.

One other thing that seems out of place, is that two little boys can travel 900 miles in a day. As a parent I cannot
imagine trying to drive and care for them at the same time.
Something does not seem right.

God bless the little boys and Susan's parents.
