This incident comes just days after a 6-year-old boy in Newport News, VA shot his teacher, 25-year-old Abigail Zwerner, with a handgun.

I have no idea about the weight of the gun so I absolutely believe your statement about it being too heavy. Another poster suggested that the gun was in the desk & I’m leaning towards this as the strongest possibility. While I don’t doubt that a person could have quickly looked into the backpack, my experience has been that 1st graders don’t carry enough in their backpack to have hidden the weapon. Though, I guess it could have been in a lunchbox in the bag. I don’t appreciate the lack of transparency in this case.
It was on his person per Drew, NCP. Link up thread.

That was horrifying to watch. :(

It really was. It would have been bad enough seeing him wandering around outside a closed door, unsupervised at the top of a set of stairs, but then you add in the gun!!!
Interesting how quickly his father was arrested, the toddler hadn't even shot anyone. Yet, the child who shot the teacher, crickets.

Personally, I am wondering if the police investigators have ever had access to the home of the six year old since the shooting. Not one mention of that so far. The silence is deafening, IMO

Meanwhile, there have been ample reports of the mysterious "school administrative staff" rummaging through the boys backpack and not finding anything. Inquiring minds ( ME ) want to know if that staff member was the school secretary who took the phone call? ( Was it a phone call? ) Or was it the janitor?? The principal? Who/what role did that staff person have? And, was that the school's policy when a search was required?

Another unknown....
Did the 6 year old boy ( with a gun ) walk into school and go directly to his classroom? It was reported that he was dropped off to school "late" at 11:30. Did he stop at the 'office' first, to report in late? Was the bag searched before he entered his classroom? Or was he taken out of his classroom, and the unsuccessful search happened?

Still so many questions...

WHY aren't more reporters pushing for answers to ALL of these questions??!!

Are there parents of other children (or teachers) at this school /leading a fight for answers? If not... uhmm... Why?

Just jumping off your post @shotgun09 (not directed at you ;))

So do we know for sure that Ms.Zwerner wasn’t asked to be the one to check the boy? In the classroom?
Nope
All we know is " an administration staff". Could be the janitor, the secretary, the Lunch Lady, The principal, the VP, or any teacher or aide.
We were not informed of where the search was completed either.

In my area, Administration means only administrators -- principals, assistant principals, superintendents, level coordinators.

Maintenance or food service or even classroom would be referred to with those terms.

No experience in Virginia, however.

Have we noticed any Virginia teachers posting?

I watched this play out live on OPL last night. It was terrifying. There were multiple neighbors in the apartment building who saw the kid and called the police. One lady said she sees the kid outside in the hallway by himself all the time. That he walks over and beats on her door.

Dad’s mom also lives in the apartment complex. She walked over after the child’s mother was called to come pick him up. Dad’s a felon and isn’t allowed to have possession of a gun. He told LE it was his brother’s gun, and he didn’t know his child had been playing with it. That was clearly a lie when the cops found the gun inside one of those desks with an enclosed pull down hutch. Because it was obvious the kid wouldn’t have been able to lift up the hutch. His mom was out there pleading with the police not to arrest him. She said he’d been in bed sick and had worked hard after his felony to regain custody and get a job and all that. LE was way too empathetic about the whole situation if you ask me. They were even debating about whether or not they should arrest him before they learned he was a convicted felon!

You and many others ( me included ) find this fact interesting also.
Curioser and curioser...said Alice
Moo....per NCOP, all information has been turn over to the Commonwealth Attorney for review.

Moo.... If the parent notified the school, hypothetically....mom drops off son, mentions, keep an eye on him today, I can't find my gun. Someone (my guess, the secretary) checks his book bag and clears him to go to class. I don't think charges will be filed.

The book bag was checked prior to child entering class. The child was NOT searched. I would think, searching the child would require a parent present and performed by LE.

For some reason, the school administrator did not feel necessary, nor the need to involve LE.

All my opinion

Well, the Virginia law I posted, could be ambiguous. It is a Class 1 misdemeanor if the weapon injured a "child" under age 14. But it doesn't say anything about adults.
from your link....barely saying if you leave a loaded gun unsecured and a child under 14 obtains it IS an endangerment.

A. It shall be unlawful for any person to recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of fourteen. Any person violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

§ 18.2-11. Punishment for conviction of misdemeanor.

The authorized punishments for conviction of a misdemeanor are:

(a) For Class 1 misdemeanors, confinement in jail for not more than twelve months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both.

I always had to go through the Administrative Asst (secretary), who I feel had way to much authority. Moo...

Well, the first thing that should be done is to speak to a Doctor, get the child assessed for any kind of special needs, ASD, ADHD, SPD, GDD, and more, to find out if the child has an invisible disability and unmet needs. To try to work together to work out what those unmet needs are and how we, the adults, can work to meet those needs.
To understand that all behaviour is communication and this child is communicating quite clearly that they need help, not to write off a "toddler" as violent and manipulative.
With so many adults ready to condemn tiny children as basically just bad, call 6 yr olds attempted murderers,as of they have any real understanding of what that really means when they have only been out of nappies for about 3 years, its really no wonder kids are struggling.

There's also a very simple solution to stopping children being in a position to shoot people.

All MOO.
a 6 year old is not a "toddler"!

@MichelleWolfTV
information on the timeline leading up to a 6yo boy shooting his 1st grade teacher.
Per @DrGParker
: -Boy arrived at 11:30am -His book bag was searched after it was reported he may have had a weapon -1 admin was notified of a possible weapon

The first administrative change I would suggest is to fire whoever searched the shooter's book bag/backpack with a loaded pistol inside and didn't find it! That level of incompetence is staggering, IMO!
