Am I the only one who thinks these new school issued clear backpacks are just creepy and sort of border on breach of privacy, not to mention a complete waste of money? Sure, anyone could conceal anything personal or private inside of a bag inside of the clear back pack but that sort of defeats the purpose since anyone could do the same thing with a weapon.

Clear backpacks are not a new thing. Its quite common.

Are school lockers a thing of the past now? Do elementary students carry their book bags and/or backpacks around with them all day?

If lockers still exist maybe personal items could be stored there or in a special/personal area in the school office. I know this may require a few more steps (depending on the size of the school)... it's just an idea.

I wonder if these children feel safer seeing police around the school?

DeDe Williams, the grandmother of a Richneck Elementary third grader, described the first day back as “overwhelming.”

“It’s sad that we have to go in and see all the officers there at an elementary school with these babies,” Williams said, “but it made my heart feel better that they were there, taking it serious.”

Asked Monday whether school administrators or staff could face charges in connection to the incident, Drew would not comment. As for whether the mother could face charges, Drew said that decision will be made by the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.

“Today, for me and this department and I would even say for our city, was about kids getting back to school,” the police chief said, “making sure that they’re safe.”

The father of a student who was in the same class as the 6-year-old said Monday he has “no misgivings” about sending his son back to school.

“I think with new administration, this administration that listens to teachers, listens to concerns and acts on those concerns … this is probably going to be the safest school in the area for a good long while,” Thomas Britton told CNN.

My son was given one in his high school 22 years ago.
I've never heard of them until recently and my youngest 4 kids all went through public highschool here in Ontario.

My kids had them at their high school in the early 2000s. It was grades 7-12. They were required for a few years, then they went back to regular back packs.

Clear backpacks have been around for years, required by some school districts even back in the 90s.

Some workplaces require clear backpacks, or clear tote bags as the only item that can be brought into the workplace.

One of my friends worked in a cosmetics store in the mall back in the 1980s and she was required to carry a clear bag at work. That was the first time I ever heard of a requirement to use clear bags.

As someone in the UK, the idea of see through bags is completely alien.

Yeah, I'm Australian, and it's equally foreign to me.

All our backpacks are made of canvas or heavy duty nylon fabric.

Thankfully, you have no need. Hope you never do. IMO :(

I think there are "similar" policies in other countries (outside the US) related to large music events/festivals and cricket/sport events. If not required for entry... clear bags are suggested for security speed, etc.

I hope so, too.

Our country isn't perfect, but one thing I am most grateful for is the changes that happened after Port Arthur. Those laws went through unilaterally, and we had a stable conservative government at the time. It wasn't something forced through by the Left, it was everybody saying, 'no, not again' in unison.

I hope one day you don't need them either.

I graduated in 1999. We weren’t required to wear clear backpacks, but my high school had metal detectors.

FTR, I never felt like I was going to school at a correctional facility either.

It does seem to be a regional thing.

Well, I don't attend those sort of events so I've just never heard of it before.

Not in this particular case though. Here we deal with a kid who, it seems, is perfectly verbal, throws the threats of very hardcore violence left and right, smuggled the gun into school and then, unprovoked at the moment, pulled that gun out, aimed at the teacher and shot her. That's not your usual case of a disabled kid who has problems with the sensory input, communication or both and has a hard time with controlling and processing their emotions.

Here we deal with something else that requires very thorough investigation. The propensity for using violence as a solution, a planned violence, does not appear from the thin air. This kid learned it from someone. Who ? How does his family environment look like? What did the parents do to deal with quite obvious antisocial tendencies of their child? What kind of therapy the child got for the issues connected to his disability ? What kind of media had he access to? Was he using them under supervision ?

It's a complicated matter and there is a lot of questions that have to be answered.
I'm particularly interested in how much therapy this child was receiving prior to the attack on his teacher ?

Drew also told us about the final report on what happened and how it happened, getting it ready for the Commonwealth’s Attorney,

“I got a little projection on when they will submit it to the Commonwealth’s Attorney,” Drew said. “I’m not going to you that date, but it is coming. It’s still one or two days ahead of where I thought they would be.”
...
“I think we got a good idea on how it happened,” Drew said. “I’m not going to report that date, but I’m looking forward to giving it to the Commonwealth’s Attorney to review.”

Twelve Newport News police officers welcomed students at the entrance and in the parking lot where they walked through a state-of-the-art metal detector.
Newport News School Board Chairwoman, Lisa Surles-Law, said the students did not appear overwhelmed by the new security measures.
"They're [metal detectors] very far apart from the door and they're not very noticeable," said Surles-Law. "That's what we were going for is that we had the safety presence, but it not be as noticeable."
