I would also be checking for any marks on the Mama's hands!

So sorry to hear the news about little baby Aveion...
[BBM]

That was my initial thought....and hope...that she at least slammed him in the face with a fist or frying pan. Then I hoped little Aveion got some revenge on the 🤬🤬🤬. And then I stopped hoping as it dawned on me that if size was not a factor with such an injury....this typical action of a baby/toddler that so many of us have endured with love and patience could have been why this 🤬🤬🤬 did what he did.

For some reason that makes me even angier.....

" *BREAKING NEWS* " on HLN about Aveion being with a foster family last year. Didn't we know this days ago here at WS?

Of course we did know it here, or of it here days ago. Idaho' you've been around WS long enough to know often info is posted here days before it makes 'breaking news'. Remember when people swore NG got her scripts for the show when reading the CA forum? I can almost always count on WS having more info, even if not yet confirmed, days before it hits the media. :) love my fellow sleuths!

JVM talking about this case and they just got information:

This child was 8 lbs at 15 months and was removed from the home in April of 09. Not sure when he was returned to the home.

What the HELL???????

:furious:

You're right, Cubby. Whenever I want to know the "real story", I come here. :) Once again, way to go Websleuths and sleuthers!

Praying that they can find little Aveion soon. Or someone finally gives it up.

What about the babysitter? Is there anything else that the babysitter can tell? and what about the 4 year old? wonder what she had to tell LE?

  • #486
Not sure if it's been posted here and I'm having problems with staying connected so I can't check and see, but there will be a candlelight vigil held Saturday at 5pm in Roanoke in the area where he lived if anyone wants to attend.

  • #487
Does anyone know if LE is asking for assistance with searching for this little boy? Are there any searches set up? Do you think we should try to notify Tim Miller and TES about this little guy? I haven't seen much about TES lately, but it could be I haven't followed any cases he is involved with lately.

TIA

When you log in beachlvr make sure you check the box that says remember me?. It will keep you logged in until you check the log out box. HTH and thanks for the info.

So in other words, you won't have to keep logging in every time you come to WS. You will be logged in already when you open the page.

FYI...he was placed in foster care in 2008...

Thank you Cubby! I think it was a mixture of that plus the computer here at work is freezing up. Thank you so much for being so helpful.

Thank you snoelle. I was familiar with some of that... that reunification was always a priority.... What happens once the child is placed back with the family to ensure the parents are not falling back to their old ways if any. Are there some procedures in place where a social worker or someone makes calls on the family to ensure the child is still being properly cared for? Or does CPS/DSS involvement end when the child is placed back with the family? I think it is the "follow up" that I just described that I don't understand the most..... what measures are taken to make sure the parents don't fall back into the old habits or old ways and are able to further their new parenting skills?

Say for example, a child was removed from the home for medical neglect. Once the child is placed back with the bio family, do they need to continue to prove they are ensuring the child is continuing to receive proper/appropriate medical care?
ETA: And what about HIPPA laws when CPS/DSS is involved? Is the agency allowed to get information from the child's pediatrician or medical records to ensure the child is being properly cared for and the parents are following recommended treatment? And if not, would the pediatrican and agency be in contact with each other to be notified if this was not happening with the child?

I can't help but wonder sometimes, and worry, about parents who will 'go through the motions' to get their child/ren back and then just stop doing what they were required to do in order to get them back.

Also, if mental illness or drug/alcohol addiction is a reason for removal, once the children are back, how does the agency ensure the parents are not off the wagon, no longer following any medical treatment required for mental illness?

Sorry so long, those are pretty much my questions and biggest concerns.

thanks!

Typically, a child who is returned home remains in the custody of DSS for several months...it is usually referred to as a trial home placement. While the child is in the physical care of the parents, the child remains in the legal custody of DSS. During this time, there are regular and frequent visits from DSS and other involved agencies (dr's, CHIP, in-home services) and a condition of the trial placement is usually that the parents cooperate with these services and facilitate access to the child. All of these agencies are allowed access to a child's records and information as 1) custody of the child remains with DSS and 2) it is usually written in a court order to preempt any barriers due to HIPPA. If the parents do not cooperate, the child can be placed back in the physical custody of DSS due to a "failed" trial placement; however, such a measure is again at the mercy of the courts who may choose to ignore such warning signs as reports from involved agencies, the child's doctor, and the child's attorney regarding the safety of the child. People can shout from the rooftops that a child is at risk and unfortunately, all the power lies with the courts...

Can only confirm that this is true and it was NOT a case of organic failure to thrive.

Yikes!

Looked up non organic failure to thrive.
http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/growth/thrive.html

From the above link:

What causes nonorganic failure to thrive?

Psychological, social, or economic problems within the family almost always play a role in the cause of NOFTT. Emotional or maternal deprivation is often related to the nutritional deprivation. The mother or primary caregiver may neglect proper feeding of the infant because of preoccupation with the demands or care of others, her own emotional problems, substance abuse, lack of knowledge about proper feeding, or lack of understanding of the infant's needs.

My heart breaks even moreso now for Aveion.

Cubby...here we go again...was just looking up that same term...even on the same web-site and come back here to post it and you beat me to it! Thank you for posting that info!

OT- My son was always in the 95th+ percentile, but I looked and he was 27.1 lbs at his 15 mo check up. That is more than Aveion was reported (26 lbs IIRC) at close to 3!

In order to be failure to thrive, a child has to be BELOW the 5th percentile.

  • #496
IIRC on ISSUES he was living with foster parents because he was only 8 lbs at 15 months and just recently given back to mom. His 2nd birthday is next week also.
I wish I would of been able to get everything..........I had company.

Thanks for that info....just heartbreaking

I am always amazed at how many of these "cases" the family is already known to social services....it is just sad

This also reminds me of the poor baby "in the box"...little Shannon Dedrick

I know and most know that there is something "wrong" with that poor baby who was 11 lb at 7 mo and didn't move hardly, had NO expression...
l think she was deprived of love from her mother (who is now in jail on charges and awaiting trial for her part in the hoax etc)

Shannon was really a miracle..she survived NO thanks to her birth mother...these other tots have not been so lucky

He was 8 lbs at 15 months. The pictures plastered on TV showing a chubby, happy baby are the result of a loving, nurturing foster home. At the time he was returned home, he was a healthy weight and was no longer classified as "failure to thrive". As this indicates, non-organic failure to thrive is treatable and reversible. Organic failure to thrive is indicative of a chronic condition due to medical issues and typically can not be resolved regardless of care and medical treatment.

Information from http://www.vaamberalert.com/

MISSING:
Aveion Malik Lewis
Gender : male
Race : black
Date of Birth : 01/26/2007
Height : 2 feet 06 inches
Weight : 26 Lbs

Respectfully snipped.

Here is a growth chart for boys age 0-36 months. When you open it, click on the chart and it will increase in size.
http://pediatrics.about.com/library/growth_charts/nboysbirth.htm

26 lbs is the 50th percentile for an 18 month old. Aveion was almost 3.
26 lbs is BELOW the 5th percentile for a child of 36 months.

30" is below the 5th percentile for an 18 month old. The 5th percentile for a 36 month old would be appx 35".

So basically, if the above info is accurate, Aveion at almost 3 was the size of a tiny 18 month old.

Poor baby. At least now he knows no more pain and no more suffering.
