"WASHINGTON — James Alex Fields told Charlottesville authorities he thought he was in danger when his car collided with a crowd counterprotesting 2017’s “Unite the Right” rally, killing one and injuring dozens.

On what was the final day of prosecution witnesses, prosecutors showed jurors a text message James Alex Fields sent to his mother — which included a photo of Adolf Hitler — to demonstrate he expected a violent confrontation at that white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

On Tuesday, jurors heard from detective Steve Young, whose body-camera video of Fields being searched provided jurors their first chance to hear Fields’ voice.

“I’m sorry that — I don’t know. I didn’t want to hurt people, but I thought they were attacking me,” Fields told Young.

Later, in a police headquarters interview room, Fields was read his Miranda rights, and declined to speak. When told several people were severely injured and one had died, Young testified Fields hyperventilated for several minutes...."

Defense attorneys for James Alex Fields, Junior are presenting their case to jurors in Charlottesville Circuit Court.

The commonwealth rested Tuesday, December 4, having presented its case over the course of four days. Throughout the morning and early afternoon, the commonwealth gave jurors new insights into Fields, the man who was behind the wheel of the car attack in downtown Charlottesville on August 12, 2017.
The commonwealth played police body-camera footage from Charlottesville Police Detective Steven Young – who also testified on Friday - while he interacted with Fields at the scene of his arrest on Monticello Avenue. ...

Jurors also saw a detective reading Fields his Miranda rights. After hearing of many people being injured and one casualty on Fourth Street, Fields appears to hyperventilate for several minutes before calming down.

Later, Fields was taken to the jail and questioned by a magistrate. Fields told authorities he was trying to go home and saw crowds forming around cars in front of him. He didn't know what to do and said he got a feeling he didn't know how to describe. Fields did not elaborate further in the video.

The nine women and seven men on the jury - four of whom are alternates - have mostly heard testimony from victims of the car attack that occurred hours after the Unite the Right rally was held in downtown Charlottesville....

Judge Moore told jurors that they should expect to hear from seven or eight witnesses Wednesday, and one more on Thursday. The judge said closing arguments could be presented Thursday afternoon."

3:15 p.m.

Prosecutors have rested their case against an Ohio man accused of killing a woman and injuring dozens when he drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia last year.

The defense is set to begin presenting its case Tuesday afternoon to jurors in the trial of James Alex Fields Jr., who is charged with killing Heather Heyer and injuring dozens at the 2017 rally in Charlottesville.

Lawyers plan to call witnesses to support Fields' claim that he was acting in self-defense when he drove into the crowd....

A judge is allowing jurors to see a text message including an image of Adolf Hitler that was sent by the man who drove into a crowd of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia.

News outlets report Judge Richard Moore ruled Tuesday that prosecutors can show the text James Alex Fields Jr. sent his mother days before the 2017 rally. It was a response to his mother's plea to be careful. Fields wrote "we're not the one (sic) who need to be careful," accompanied by Hitler's image.

Fields' attorneys argued that the image would prejudice the jury. But the judge said it shows intent or motive of violence...."

"CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Reuters) - The white nationalist who drove a car into a crowd of counterprotesters at a Virginia rally last year began sobbing and whimpering after his arrest when police told him he had killed someone, according to video played at his trial on Tuesday.

Within minutes of the mayhem at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017, James Fields could be heard on footage recorded by a detective's body-worn camera saying he acted in self-defense.

"I didn't want to hurt people, but I thought they were attacking me," Fields told the police, according to the video footage played to the jury, who will soon vote on whether to convict Fields on 10 charges, including murder.

After police arrested him, Fields, 21, asked at the police station about the extent of the injuries he caused.

"There were people with injuries, one had passed away," a detective tells Fields, according to video footage from the police station.

Fields is then heard sobbing, whimpering and gasping for breath.

Steven Young, the lead detective on the case, testified that it took about two minutes to calm him down. "Mr. Fields appeared to be in a panic," Young told the court...."

Attorneys for James Alex Fields, Junior are expected to rest their case Thursday, December 6.

The defense called six people to the witness stand Wednesday, December 5. Attorneys for the 21-year-old Ohio man are expected to call two more people to testify inside Charlottesville Circuit Court Thursday morning....

Jurors saw photos taken by Edmund Davidson, who also took the witness stand Wednesday. His photos included pictures of armed police throughout the area of the rally and on rooftops. Fields could be seen in some of Davidson’s pictures. There were also pictures of protesters bleeding and being treated for pepper spray.

Davidson told the court he thought counterprotesters might kill him after he saw one holding a sign saying "This Machine Kills Fascists."...

Philip DePue, a digital forensic expert, examined data on Fields’ phone. His testimony went over two routes Google Maps suggested to Fields around 1:39 p.m. in order for him to get back to Ohio....

Also called to testify were Hayden Calhoun and Sara Bolstad, a couple who attended the Unite the Right rally together. Calhoun recounted how they met Fields and a fourth person - later identified as Joshua Matthews during Bolstad's testimony. The four of them stuck together, and Calhoun said Fields later invited the couple to go get lunch....

Charlottesville Police Detective Steven Young was also called back to the witness stand. Young went over much of the same evidence brought forth by the commonwealth Tuesday regarding data pulled from Fields' phone.

Court was initially delayed for about two hours Wednesday. Judge Richard Moore announced that something was said in the presence of a juror Tuesday that needed to be followed-up on. The judge said it did not affect the trial.

Judge Moore said at the end of the Wednesday’s proceedings that he hopes to move into closing arguments after the courts’ lunch break Thursday."

After reading news articles and tweets over the last two days, it seems to me that the defense from Fields' lawyers is more vapor than anything else. I agree with Molly Congor's tweet: "i have been waiting and waiting for the defense's strategy to coalesce into something coherent. for the moment it zooms out and you can see all the bread crumbs actually form a trail to... something? and it hasn't happened. it's all loose ends and false starts. it's nothing."

But lo & behold.. Tomorrow, Dwayne Dixon will be one of the last two defense witnesses.
