Police said a homicide investigation was launched days after the initial missing persons call was received.

"Detectives quickly picked up on some suspicious circumstances regarding Ms. Lu," Fairfax County Police Sgt. Hudson Bull said Thursday.

[...]

[JB] describes her mother as a very generous and loving person who always puts others first. She said she didn’t know of anyone who would want to harm her.

[...]

[JB] said her mother has had tenants renting rooms in her large home for the better part of three decades.

“It's been a part of growing up and going over there we would always have tenants and then just remained until she disappeared, the same way,” [JB] said. “I hope that they are being cooperative with the police, and in their investigation."

[JB] said she talked to her mother on the phone the day she went missing, and all had seemed fine. With no indication, anything was off.

“She talked about the work she talked about just what she was looking forward to, just a normal conversation,” [JB] said.

Daughter of missing 72-year-old Emily Lu pleads for help in locating mother who vanished from Virginia home (nbcnews.com)
[...]

Emily Lu, a native of Taiwan, has been in the United States since the 1970s after marrying a serviceman stationed overseas. The marriage didn’t last. JB lives in Arkansas, where she grew up and where her father still lives. She still regularly speaks to her mother who has made her home in Lorton, Virginia.

[...]

Despite being retired from her career in software development, the 72-year-old continued to work - this time as a caregiver for seniors.

“That became a vocation for her,” JB said. “And she just loves taking care of people. So after she retired, that’s all she wanted to do. She was extremely devoted to her job and to her patients. For her to not show up - especially for the patient she was supposed to see that day - it doesn’t make any sense.”

[...]

Detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau launched an investigation which revealed that Emily Lu was last seen at the Aldi grocery store, at 1329 Gordon Plaza in Woodbridge, Virginia, at 7:52 p.m. on Jun 3, 2021. Security video from the store shows Emily buying bananas and other groceries. Detectives say she arrived home but never took the groceries inside.

Fairfax County Police Sergeant Hudson Bull told Dateline that detectives suspected foul play was involved after evidence suggested she may have been harmed inside the home.

[...]

The 72-year-old, who had her large house in Lorton, Virginia built in the 1990s, has always rented rooms out to tenants for the better part of three decades, her daughter said.

[...]

“Our Major Crimes detectives are working tirelessly to determine what led up to Mrs. Lu’s disappearance,” Major Ed O’Carroll stated at the time. “They continue to work closely with officers from our Search and Rescue and detectives from our Crime Scene and Cyber and Forensics team. We remain committed to providing her family with answers and want anyone with answers to come forward with information to assist with our investigation.”

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to Emily Lu’s whereabouts.

I know that LE interviewed all the tenants, but IMO the more obvious option is if one of the tenants hurt her.

Wonder what this means from the missing person poster:
"She is considered endangered due to mental and/or physical health concerns."

Mental concerns - did she have some memory problems or self harm concerns? And/or physical concerns as in trouble walking, etc.? (though I doubt this due to the video from the store where she seemed fine in that regard, even vibrant JMO).

snip.

My guess is that they consider her endangered since she is 72 years old. While she may be a very healthy and vibrant person with a lot of pep and all doesn't mean that she is healthy. Most elderly are on heart meds, cholesterol meds, or of the such and with just a general risk of injury from just tripping...

Emily Lu missing Fairfax County, former tenant speaks out | wusa9.com

“Among her former tenants was 25-year-old [AK], who lived at her home from September until March after he responded to her ad on Craigslist.

Another tenant was living in the basement during his time there, according to [K], who said he last saw Lu more than a month ago when he dropped off the keys to the house. He said he and the other renter moved out because Lu had plans to sell the house.” (bbm)

***
“[K] feels haunted knowing he's seen Lu unload groceries in the night on many occasions.

"I've seen her come from the grocery store and unpack in the garage," he said. "I swear to God you can't even see the property at night, you can't even see the hand in front of you."”

***

Don’t know if any significance, but I noted this former tenant said Emily was planning to sell the house, which he said was the reason he had to leave. Didn’t former articles state there was someone else living in the house besides her at the time of her disappearance? Was it true she was planning to sell, or did she just want AK and the other out? Hmm.

AK suggests it gets very dark outside the house. Where I am it doesn’t get dark until after 8 these days. She was shopping just before 8, so it shouldn’t have been that dark yet, I think?

The sun has set, but there is still light here, even at 9pm.

Private investigator to conduct own search for missing 72-year-old Emily Lu
6/18/2021

Despite Fairfax County police already combing through the property and the woods behind Emily Lu's home in Lorton, a Prince William County private investigator is conducting his own search as a way to help. Joshua Embery of Nighthawk Investigative Service has already searched the area three times, but he wants to return this weekend with help from the community. He has posted on social media and community pages to draw support. [snip] Embery is also digging into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and claimed he compiled the list of tenants who rented a room from the house.

18 Jun 2021 FB post regarding the search (Emily's daughter, J.B. has commented.)
Come out tomorrow and assist us with the search! Nighthawk finally made it in the news!

Detectives previously said that foul could have been involved in Lu’s disappearance. They added she was not the only person living in her home at the time she went missing.

“A team of detectives from our Major Crimes and Cyber and Forensics Bureau continue to comb through evidence, conduct interviews and follow up on leads,” a Fairfax County Police Department statement reads. “Detectives remain dedicated to this case and are working diligently to find Ms. Lu.”

Ball said her family and Lu’s employer, HomeInstead Senior Care, are planning a candlelight vigil to bring awareness to the case. Ball said the vigil will occur at Lu’s home in Lorton on July 15 at 7 pm.

I know that FCPD is working hard on this cases.

I will say though that there are no missing signs that I have seen in the area, which may help people keep her in the forefront.

"This is not going to go away. we’re not gonna stop trying to look for her and the police have assured me they’re not going to stop investigating as well. they’re going to keep looking for her. She’s a valuable person," said [JB, daughter].“
—-
“Police found evidence there was a struggle and that Lu may have been hurt inside her home.”

—-
"We want to talk to all of those previous occupants that lived there. They may have a piece of information that could assist us. So if there’s somebody watching, listening, your broadcast that has information – that lived at the resident years ago, we want to talk to you," said Major Ed O’Carroll. "I can tell you we’re canvassing that list as deep as we can to go back as far as we can, but we think the facts and circumstances ties into a relatively short window, not deep into Ms. Lu’s past."

Our employer is encouraging us to attend. Unfortunately, I am unable to. I may drive by her house though after I drop my son off at camp this morning.

I drove by the house, but her daughter and other family members were outside, heading to their car. I assume that they are headed to the search area & press conference. There is a helicopter circling the search area as well. The area is very hilly & wooded. Here are a couple of pictures that I took. I drove back around and was able to get a picture of her house. The driveway is steep down to the house, but the entire area is visible from the street.
