GUILTY VA - Helen Hargan, 23, Pamela Hargan, 63, Staged Murder-Suicide, McLean, 14 July 2017 *Guilty again in 2023*

Mom was a very intelligent, successful woman. Helen seemed to also show that promise. She had just gone to VA. I am not sure that she was actually living with her mom because they did not know Helen or her vehicle. She had just recently graduated from SMU in Dallas. She and her boyfriend from Dallas were planning to move to that area. Megan had lived with her mother for years. At one point Molly had a FB page after the murders and there was a picture, I think it was Thanksgiving, where Megan and Molly were visiting with Molly's father's family. I assume that her father's family will likely get Molly since Molly only has one aunt left alive on her mother's side of the family.

Very scary that it took them awhile to figure out that this was not a murder/suicide, and Megan was pretty close to getting away with this. Glad she is captured.
You'll be glad to know that they knew right away, but let it stand so Megan would not know that she was the target of the investigation. See latest article that finally sheds some light.

Dang. What a smart young lady to have this much nothingness, assuming she did what she’s accused of. Humanity is suffering at the hands of our organic selves, it’s getting super old hoe cold, callous and manipulative these people are on the daily. It’s depressing. Sounds like everyone all but expected this entitled little **** to do exactly as she did bc she was fueled by some major drama at home. No excuse, but our children are product of their environmenuts. Such a shame all around.

She had everything going for her, her older sister is the one who felt entitled

Originally, it was said Megan and her daughter were on the road somewhere. It was only in the testimony when Helen's boyfriend said Helen didn't want to leave her except that I realized this child witnessed her grandmother and aunt's murder at the hands of her MOTHER. How tramatizing!

Covered tonight on CBS's 48 Hours. I really can't believe anyone though Megan Hargan was innocent. SHe had gunshot residue on her hands and there's that phone call trying to transfer money out of her Mom's account!
Just saw this fascinating case on 48 hours-- oh the evil!!! glad she got her punishment. So sad. Love that the phone call was recorded-- nowadays we have all kinds of technology that perps are not aware of-- that help catch them and put them in prison!

Does anyone know about Megan's "military husband?" How did he think they were paying for the WV house? CBS' 48 Hours said they eventually got a VA loan for a different house after the murder. Where is Molly? Was "military husband" Molly's dad? So sad for so many.

Thanks for setting up this thread. When first posted the news identified Megan's boyfriend as being Carlos. With Facebook, I was able to determine that Carlos's girlfriend was Helen. He had a picture of Helen and himself as his cover photo and his friends were asking what happened to Helen. Helen had gone to SMU in Dallas and was working on her Master's Degree. It was obvious to me that it was Helen that called Carlos in fear after Meghan had shot her mother in the laundry room and soon after shot Helen who had locked herself in her bedroom. I did report Carlos's Facebook page to the police. So glad they finally arrested this evil sister.
Wow -- good on you. And did you make this discovery in real time?

I just learned about this case last night on 48 Hours and was unaware of it until then.

There's a huge delay in VA between conviction and sentencing! I'm still looking for details about MH's bail and if she's still out on bond. She's scheduled for sentencing on 10/28/22.

Reportedly, mom and daughter left the house at 1:30 pm after the murders. This was a very grand home so I think good chance the child did not see/hear anything.

Fortunately, the child is living with her father out of state and divorced Magen.

The aunt (mother's sister) told People it was very strange to her that Magen and the child lived with the mother for several and she didn't understand how this long-distance marriage worked. The husband wasn't deployed.

Seems to me that Megan was obsessed with watching over the assets and her mother. JMO

Fortunately, investigators allowed the murder-suicide hoax to be portrayed in the news while they built a solid case against Magen.

MCLEAN, Va. – Fairfax County Police say that the fraudulent money transactions allegedly perpetrated by a West Virginia woman taking money from her mother tipped police that the apparent murder-suicide was simply a staged event designed to mislead investigators.

Police say that a 35-year-old woman is facing charges in the murder of her mom and sister. On July 14, 2017, 23-year-old Helen Lorena Hargan and her mother, 63-year-old Pamela Denise Hansen Hargan were found dead in a home in the 6700 block of Dean Drive in McLean. They had both been shot.

On Wednesday, Helen's boyfriend, Carlos Gutierrez, testified publicly for the first time. He told the court he spoke on the phone with Helen, who was hysterical as she told him about the terror-filled scenario unfolding at home in McLean.

At the time he spoke to Helen, Gutierrez was in Dallas.

"She told me her sister had killed her mother," Gutierrez told the court, NBC4 Washington reports.

[..]

He told the prosecutor Helen said she never saw her mother's dead body, but said "the door was cracked and she could hear her mom gasping," NBC4 Washington reports.

Gutierrez testified that Helen allegedly told him that Megan shot and killed their mother because she was afraid that her mother was going to take her 8-year-old daughter away from her, NBC4 Washington reports.

Reiterating what he told authorities in 2017, according police reports obtained by PEOPLE , Gutierrez testified that Helen said Megan was "on the computer transferring money," NBC4 Washington reports.

[..]

"She was saying she didn't know what to do," he testified. She said the little girl "was in the house as well and she didn't know how to get her out."

At some point, Gutierrez lost contact with Helen and began calling her, to no avail.

Eventually, Megan answered the phone and told him that Helen and her mother were arguing over a speeding ticket, but refused to let him talk to Helen, he testified, NBC4 Washington reports.

Terrified for his girlfriend, Gutierriez called 911.

"I think this is life or death," he said during the call. "I think someone might be dead."
