GUILTY VA - IH, 14, taken by mothers ex-bf, Bruce Lynch, 34, Bumpass, Louisa County, 21 Oct 2019

I know the BRP rangers have been checking empty cabins and locals as well. We have lots of vacation/ hunting/abandon cabins near Floyd, Roanoke, down to NC line this is off I81 and I77. Locals went out on 4 wheels and horse back yesterday. All campgrounds are on the look out, word being spread on AT. FB is ablaze with the area folks have checked. These are good old country/mountain folks.

Imo...
Well these good ol country folks need to be dang careful. They should NOT approach him; too dangerous for them and the girl.

The facts as we know it is that a very mentally unstable man has taken a young girl from her home in the middle of the night. It is not yet known if she went willingly or not. Either way she Is now in extreme danger of her life at the hands of a suicidal man. The situation is dire in that nearly every news outlet across the country has released desperate pleas for the public’s assistance.
As a reminder there has been no comment on a sexual relationship between the two and so until it is announced otherwise everyone should be mindful that this an innocent girl. Any rumors or assumptions will forever be online even if they turn out to not be true.
Praying she is released and returned home safely and unharmed today.

Thanks, I remember all the nasty comments at the beginning of JCs case and others. I hate she may one day see them or that her family may have read them. It is very hurtful. 14 yos are not able to make the decisions an adult would, they just don't have life experiences we have.

I absolutely agree! This abduction to include the local rumor mill makes me ill. It’s like a repeat of ET’s abduction in 2017 by former Tennessee teacher Tad Cummins.

If it’s his plan to camp, it makes more sense (although it appears he has none) that he would go south or west to a warmer climate, not north. They could be anywhere by now and may look quite different. Her hair could be short and a different color. He could no longer have a beard/mustache and could shave his head or dye his hair as well.
I said the same thing regarding going south toward warmer climates with regard to the Tad Cummins situation, and they ended up in cold northern CA where there was still a bit of snow on the ground - although in the month they were gone, they'd also been to the warm areas of the Golden State. I have been wrong many times as I was then, but I am going to agree with you - I'm thinking he took her to Miami or New Orleans or somewhere where it's not super cold. I also think he'd want to get away from where the all of the locals would be looking for him. That poor girl. I hope she brought a jacket and a blanket. MOO

The good old country folks are well versed in the law, they are volunteer EMTs and Firemen. They know what to do. Those of us that live in rural American are use to banning together, doing our own searches and are excellent marksmen. We are not a bunch of crazy hillbillies. We don't have the resources large cities have and in desperate time many locals can and are deputized. Most small counties have a Sheriff and a couple of deputies. Without locals we'd be up a creek without a paddle.

Kids are raised with gun safety, cleaning and shooting. My grandkids can hit the bullseye at 75 yards, 10 out of 10, but they know the dangers of guns. Kids still say yes man and no man and respect all.

ETA...And we don't have gangs and teenage violence. Their daddy's would beat their butts in a heartbeat.

2 bedroom with five kids? Do I have that right?
Two bedrooms with five kids is doable albeit not my style. I have large family acquaintances that use two sets of triple bunk beds in each bedroom.

I know I personally don’t intend to argue semantics with what “she went willingly” means. All it means to me is that he didn’t have to break into the house, sneak by her sleeping sister and restrain her. No one is blaming the child. I think it’s pretty obvious that 14 year olds don’t have the same decision making capabilities as adults.

Elizabeth Smart was taken while her sister was awake from her home. It happens.

Hoping she's found today.

Wish there was an anti-snarky font on here so that questions posed would be known to be taken as a genuine question and not rudeness, but why, in this case in particular, is there so much sensitivity in regards to discussing the usual motivations or reasons for a 34 year old man to abduct a 14 year old girl?

Why would there be a "comment from LE about these two having a sexual relationship" expected even if that were the case? Keeping in mind that she is an innocent girl, I wouldn't exactly classify a child being possibly molested by a trusted adult, like their mother's ex-boyfriend a "sexual relationship" as that implies intimacy and connectedness between two willing parties; not an adult taking advantage and performing illegal acts on someone who cannot legally consent.

We are big on facts here and also big on making educated guesses based on those known facts and previous cases.

What would be his motivation in taking her? Custody disputes, sexual motivations, homicidal motivations tend to be the main reasons.

Perhaps this is a custody issue, but he never had custodial rights to her, or did he at one time? Anyone know the legalities there? Why did he just take her? There are 4 other children, yes? Are any of the kids his, biologically I mean?

If the plan is homicide or homicide + suicide, again, why was she the target? Did they have a very strained relationship prior to this? Was she the most defiant? Easiest to break into the house and grab?

Every angle I try to look at this case, I circle back to my original thoughts. Which is that he was already preying on her prior to the night she disappeared. My thoughts on that being the issue don't change the fact that she's an innocent young girl.

Respectfully, I always defend the child, every case, no matter. I also, have defended many parents from rural communities where a child has wondered off.

It happens, me and a cousin got lost in woods on the family farm, at 12 yo. They had everybody out looking, as we sauntered through the woods, eating Oreos and apple juice. We didn't make the news, but her dad found us first and proceeded to spank us both.
When we got to the house about 25 people had been searching. Kids do crazy things...

I see no basis for undefined accusations when kids are involved.

I haven’t seen anyone making rude comments on this thread regarding the victim. I think we all agree even if she left “willingly” that it is manipulative of the ex boyfriend and horribly wrong and the child is not to blame. The obvious motivation on his part is sexual.

Either she left with him on her own accord, or was taken by him. Either way, he is the one to blame here.

I’m open to other motives, but I am presuming he was grooming her before she disappeared. They knew right away that they were missing together. There has to be a backstory there.

Taking off with Mom's ex always makes the hair on my neck stand up. I hope she is found soon. Why??? Why do men take off with teenage girls so often?!!!

They like the control and power. They can’t handle being in a relationship with a peer. They like the predatory aspect.

MOO. If he has been grooming her, then he has instilled a sense of guilt in her (examples: you seduced me; I couldn't help but fall in love with you) and has attempted to make her completely dependent on him emotionally (examples: your mother will never forgive you; your family will blame you for our love affair; everyone knows you intentionally ran away with me). IMO, the messaging at the press conference was to let her know that wasn't true, and that she is loved and dearly missed. JMO.

I also suspect they do not want him to feel overly pressured, as others have said, and avoid either of them making a rash decision (hers under duress, and we don't know what her emotional state may be right now). The psychological effects of kidnapping (which is what this is) are immediately traumatic. MOO. They need her to stay alive until they can be found and to know she has the unconditional support and love of her family and community. JMO.

I am praying she is located safely.

Thank you for this.

In every case practically I see people outraged at “useless” pressers and criticizing LE after they hold one. Katlynn Cargill. Cupcake McKinney. Jayme Close. Mollie Tibbets. Kelsey Berreth.

LE knows what it’s doing. The FBI is involved. They know more than any agency how to approach these types of abductions.

And it is an abduction. A 14 year old can’t agree to be taken by a grown man for likely sexual purposes.

Didn’t Tad Cummins have a warrant out for his arrest tho? This guy does not. So they find them. Then what?

He will be arrested.

  • #233
Thanks. I’m really leaning toward a grooming situation here, but I hope I’m wrong!

ETA: a person can change an awful lot in 3 years. MOO

Right and a lot of these predators don’t have criminal backgrounds. Tad Cummings didn’t. The creep who “rescued” the abused girl from TN. On and on.

No matter what the motive, and no matter what’s been happening to her, he will absolutely be arrested for kidnapping. Knowing this, and being at least somewhat suicidal, I’m extremely worried how this will turn out, especially if he has been sexually abusing her on top of all of this. Hope she doesn’t have to endure much more and that she can get help so soon :(
Any word why they broke up a month ago?

He will be arrested.
Yes that post was before there was an arrest warrant issued Friday. At the time I was wondering why there hadn’t been in 4 days.

My belief that she was possibly molested prior to this and that it ties in to his motivation for having taken her doesn't mean I'm not on Isabel's side or dont defend her.

If anything, it makes me feel even worse about the situation and more sympathetic towards her as it would mean that his preying on her didn't begin "just" a week ago, but had already been going on prior to her abduction.

On a slightly unrelated note, did anyone find any social media accounts of his other than the FB page? Any photos of him floating around where he has a different appearance? No facial hair? Different hairstyle or cut perhaps? Any photos of him from the prize-winning tomato contest from last year or anything like that where he looks different?

Any reports on specific camping gear taken? A description of a tent perhaps?

Does he have a pop up camper, fifth wheel or RV perhaps? Or access to one?

Edited to add:
(Nevermind I'm guessing that vehicle of his couldnt pull something of that size?)

I heard the car was spotted on I-64 in WV. I’m trying to find confirmation. I hope it’s true!
I was just about to post I hope that’s means they have been spotted in your area. Praying and hoping

You are correct, we have no evidence one way or the other. In the early reports of them stating she was “in the company of” Bruce and that he was not accused of any wrongdoing and no arrest warrants led me to presume they think she went willingly. I’m glad that they are now treating it as an abduction

They’ve been treating it like an abduction from the beginning. They know what they’re doing. The FBI doesn’t get involved in cases where there’s no crime. And a child can’t “go willingly”. Even when it appears that they agreed to go these are kids who are preyed upon and groomed and manipulated. And they’re usually terrified but confused and don’t know how to say no or to get away. They’re in a spider’s trap. They sense the danger. They feel it. And they’re typically repulsed by any sexual “contact”.

He’s looking at a serious charge of abduction with an immoral purpose which in this case they would likely describe as “concubinage” of a child under 16. (I mean let’s be real. In every one of these teenager abducted by some adult people bring up the possibility that it’s for some noble purpose or other then sexual and that’s pretty much never the case).

It’s abduction because even if not by threat or force, use of deception would apply. And grooming a kid and manipulating them into going would likely fit “deception” parameters.
