Intimate partner violence (IPV)
Expert witness, psychiatrist David R Spiegel tells the court he has published two articles on trauma, and within those articles he wrote about intimate partner violence (IPV).
He says it's important for the jury to understand that IPV can be physical, phycological and sexual, and that it can be carried out for different reasons including maintaining power, control or authority. He says while the abuse itself is obviously a key factor, the motivation behind it is also important to understanding each situation.
He is a witness for Amber Heard's team, but before he is fully questioned Johnny Depp's team are disputing his qualifications. They are raising the fact that he has nothing specifically about IPV on his CV; has not written anything specifically with IPV in the title; and while he has written articles and parts of a book about trauma, he has not specifically written about the subset of IPV.
Dr Spiegel disagrees, saying IPV is part of trauma, and so he has written about IPV at length. The questioning becomes a little testy, and after Dr Spiegel is asked to elaborate about the book he published, he fires back to Heard's lawyer: "
Thanks for the book plug". The dispute continues, and will be noted in the judges records, but now he will continue being questioned by Heard's team.
