VA - Joseph Ryan shot, Christine Banfield stabbed, both deceased, in home - Herndon 24 Feb 2023

Blind guess -- did BB take advantage of that knowledge when choosing the method of death?

Not sure how or whether it would impact/advance death.

JMO
Hmmmm. I wonder if BB never mentioned anything to the emergency crew about the disorder. That would be extremely damning. If one was an innocent, caring spouse, wouldn’t you be screaming you have to do something immediately because she is even more danger due to her condition.

Maybe to show that she wouldn't engage in rough anything? That she was careful, had to manage her health, protect herself from injury?
Did I miss any of CB's girlfriends testifying?

As BB listens to the audio from the officer's bodycam, what do you suppose is going through BB's head? I'd like to think he's sorry, wishes he could go back in time and not do it, but I suspect instead he is mad they got caught.

JMO
Hopefully he's forever tortured by the knowledge that he could have moved out of the house with the au-pair, filed for divorce, settled the financials and had shared custody or visitation rights with his daughter.

Everything about this trial feels clunky and ill-prepared.

JMO
Yeah, I'm worried this garbage bag is going to walk.

I haven't watched closely enough to say, but crib what I've seen, they'd been very little to personalize CB, sadly. Plus iiuc, he's only on trial here for the murder of JR.

He just dialed up tears to go with the bodycam audio of his sniffles. Lip quivering.

(The bodycam sounds like they're bedside, praying over CB).

He's wiping away dry tears at the defense table.

The Defense is still trying to admit evidence, yes? Outside the presence of the jury?

They aren't showing the bodycam, only playing the audio. I think as a proffer for the judge.

Or did the jury come in and I missed it?

JMO
I'm pretty sure the jury came in after the defense motion and before the procedures to admit evidence began.

These murders are particularly heinous and brutal. Joseph Ryan was entrapped and ambushed. Christine was stabbed viciously by her husband, who after sullying her reputation, only wanted to make sure she died. He probably wanted to shoot her, just to seal the deal. But that was risky and wouldn't have comported with his script. He was the mastermind. I don't even think that he had plans to live happily ever after with Magalhaes. He needed her for the express purpose of getting rid of an albatross around his neck. She was the only one to take the bait. He just wanted to be free to do what he wanted without the scrutiny of a spouse. He was a "player", and, the way he saw it, the opportunities were boundless. Especially when he would be cast in the role of a "devastated widower" with a motherless young child to raise. Magalhaes viewed him as a stepping stone, on the way to bigger and better things. She was cunning, would have soaked him for what she could, and then moved on. (IMO)

If ever there was a case for the death penalty, this is it. But not in Virginia.

I didn't see any. But . . . I could have missed it?

Also, I don't have a link, but somewhere I read that Magalhaes texted (or "told") a friend about her plans to latch onto Brendan Banfield and reel him in, so to speak. The friend came forward to authorities with this information after the murders. If this is true, the friend could be a potential defense witness. (MOO -- please take this with a grain of salt, as I do not know whether it is true.)

I really admire this Judge. She keeps to a rigid schedule in her court room. She is decisive and pleasant. Minimal time is wasted. I don't think that the trial will take the 4 weeks that were blocked off for it. (Pretty obvious.)

I didn't realize the jury was present for all that exhibit back and forth. Despite tge Defense's assertions to otherwise, it looked like they were trying to sneak some hearsay in as well as leaving certain parts outs.

I have seen this judge on the bench before but I can't remember which trial! WS.

She is very neutral in affect.

Why is the Defense playing this, in its painful entirety?

Because BB was sniffly? Hoping the jury sees him as a victim? It's snot working, IMO.

But then, if they're going to present a defense, they have to fill time somehow. This does that.

Johnny Depp trial

Thank you. D'oh. In my limited defense, I didn't watch much of that trial.

She's very steady.

Whoa.

Defense just asked for a 5 minute recess (they didn't have the right exhibit loaded iiuc).

She's answered no.

Message received.

Who is this expert? Did the Defense hire her to review photographs?

With all due respect, the Dedense attorney is coming off like a substitute teacher who doesn't know how to operate the AV equipment. The judge has to help him with numbering his own exhibits. Long pauses. Feels very disorganized.

And also distateful.

Implying that JR's injuries to his hand occurred in the commission of a knife attack as opposed to being the real victim of one.

Can someone explain to me why the prosecutor is not wearing a business suit? She was wearing a sweater hoodie type thing yesterday as well. I'm surprised this judge allowed that. She seems strict. It's a bad look to me. I'm also noticing in this case and the Kevin West case (the firefighter battalion chief) that these prosecutors are doing very little to humanize the victims. It all sounds so technical.
