Judge sentencing her to 10 years in the penitentiary plus 2 years, suspended.

The judge's ruling was razor sharp. It is worth a listen, once it's uploaded.

Well done, Judge.

Hearing that list made my blood boil.

Incredibly heartless.

I am so relieved the Judge didn't agree with time served.

MOO.

Bravo to the judge for sentencing her to the maximum 10 sentence she was able and not just time served!

Judge did her job!!! Wow! And listing out all the ways in which this defendant was not some innocent little pawn.

State shut their mouth and didn’t argue for time-served. But they defended their treatment of JM at the presser. They were so defensive about it then. They let the judge do their job.

So apparently Virginia has a law where if you try to profit from your crime, someone can petition the AG and have all your proceeds put in escrow and that money could be distributed to the victims’ families. According to Jo Patuto.

My only concern is once she’s deported to Brazil she’s out of US jurisdiction and can probably pocket that money.

Not surprising. She stood out as the professional in this proceeding. So glad for that “feel good” news on the sentencing! JM deserves every day of her sentence!

ETA - I also want to thank everyone who posted, summarized, linked and opined during the trial. I am limited in what I can watch/read during the work day and was so grateful to be able to keep up with the proceedings on this thread. BB will join the ranks of all the other "smart" husbands out there who thought it would be cheaper and easier to kill their spouse instead of divorcing without being concerned about depriving their children of a good caring parent. BB infuriated me with his smarter-than-everyone else attitude along with his smugness about snagging his au pair. The grossest.

I was very moved by those victim impact statements, and I applaud Judge Azcarate!

That was a satisfying sentencing, all things considered. (Obviously more time would be ideal, but she didn't get time served and the judge saw right through her whining, at least.)

Judge was thoroughly unmoved by defense counsel and the defendant’s tears. She wasted no time getting to the point. And JM immediately sobered up when she realized her poor-me statement and tears weren’t gonna work. She nodded her head like she agreed with the sentence. Ha! I love how the judge pointed out that JM showed no remorse throughout the trial. She didn’t cry or get choked up once on the stand from what I recall.

I also think it’s abhorrent for the state to suggest that a young woman (early 20s) is so gullible that she can be led to a gruesome double murder like this. An early 20s woman is capable of moral reasoning.

Seriously! When I was her age I was a college graduate with a full time job, a home owner, married, and I had a child or was nearing the age where I had one. She wasn't 12 years old. She got swept up by this creep and his despicable plans largely because she wanted to be.

Great judge and correct sentence. So many of the talking heads predicted she would do time served. This is a great judge.
