VA VA - Kathleen Haley, 37, Newport News, 1 Sept 2012

  • #181
I have been trying to find anything on the sketch that was released. I find it hard to believe that they have enough of a discription to put together a composit sketch but nothing on approximate age, height, weight etc. I'm just not getting that.
Does anyone know if they have released any more info on this guy?

I haven't heard anything about Kathleen recently from the press or from LE. I thought the composite sketch would have brought about some leads, but either no one recognized the man in the sketch, or no one wants to tell LE who it is.

I hope there will be a break in this case soon, but I'm beginning to think this may be one that just never gets solved. There seems to be so little involvement by Kathleen's friends and family - no vigils, no searches, nothing as far as I know. I'm not condemning them, I'm sure they have their reasons, but without their involvement I fear Kathleen will never be found, and she will never receive the justice that everyone deserves, no matter what their lifestyle.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my WS friends.

The thing is it's kind of difficult. I posted aerlier that when reading through the thread I came upon the sketch and the name of a person I hadn't seen in about 15 yrs. popped into my head. I went onto facebook and found this persons profile complete with photos and a few look similar. But without knowing an approximate age, height etc I do not even know if he is even in the ballpark as the suspect in the sketch. The guy I knew would have reason to be around the bar scene and is from the hampton roads area. If there was any further information it would be useful.

I've just finished looking on-line for articles containing the police sketch, and none of them mention anything about height, age, etc., of the man in the sketch.

If you think you may know the guy in the police sketch, why not let LE know? It certainly couldn't hurt, since at this point it doesn't seem much is happening with Kathleen's case. I'm sure you can remain anonymous if you want to.

rob525 - I also did some looking, it's weird it seems there's no description only the sketch...

:waitasec:

And I completely agree with Marilynilpa's post above, there's no harm in letting LE know what you are thinking...

...perception is an interesting thing and intuition is our strongest sense imho.

Rob525 it could be the lead they are looking for and don't worry you will never catch up with me for dumbest calls to the po po. I called on a man trying to hang himself and the poor man was trying to hang a tire swing.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Kathleen is still missing.

It's hunting season here in Pennsylvania, where I live. I don't know if it's the same in Virginia, but let's pray that if Kathleen's remains are out there, a hunter or other outdoorsman will find her. She deserves to be found, all missing people deserve to be found.

Prayers for Kathleen.

I've spent the past couple of hours going over the news coverage of Kathleen's disappearance. I was hoping to find something I'd missed the first time around, but didn't find anything new.

I sent e-mails to various newspaper and television channels asking for an update on Kathleen's story. A long-shot, but maybe someone will be interested enough to follow up.

I wish we knew who has a key to Kathleen's apartment. Her family says she is very private, so it doesn't seem likely she would give her key out to just anyone. She doesn't have a boyfriend, at least one that her family knows about. Her previous boyfriend moved to Germany. Yet witnesses said a man used a key to enter Kathleen's apartment, and he later walked out carrying what may have been bloody bedding.

Her brother-in-law said someone beside Kathleen was in the driver's seat of Kathleen's car, because the seat was pushed all the way back. Kathleen was barely 5' tall. This person may have had Kathleen's apartment key as well as her car keys, but who knows if she gave them to him willingly or if they were taken from her.

I wish LE would issue an update on this case.

Marilyn, thank you for your dedication, and for your efforts to keep Kathleen's story in the media. Your kindness shines through your actions.

Praying for Kathleen.

I have asked Kathleen's sister (via FB) to join us on WS, but she hasn't responded. I hope she will at least check us out and see that Kathleen hasn't been forgotten.

Prayers for Kathleen.

Another bump for poor Kathleen.

The sad thing is, it's more than likely the things that are getting her overlooked that made her most vulnerable. Can't really offer much here except that the photo looks like the sort of picture you might see on a dating/chat site, but I don't know if she used one.

So far I haven't heard from Newport News media. I've asked them to do an update on Kathleen's disappearance. Even if they could just say that she's been missing since September, and show the police sketch, it might jog someone's memory.

I certainly wish someone who knows Kathleen would join us.:please:

"The longer the time goes by, the chances of locating her decrease," said Master Detective W. B. Gordon. He and other detectives with Newport News Police Department received several tips through Crime Line, but none have panned out once checked. Gordon continues to look into other tips.

"We've got the stuff we sent to the lab, and we're waiting for results from that to return," Gordon offered. "Once that returns, hopefully, that'll open up some things."

Gordon said the department has been able to find out where Haley was working. When her family reported her missing, they knew only that she was working in Portsmouth.

"Obviously, the environment she worked at, dancing, there's some hesitation on those people that work in that environment in wanting to talk to the police, but I would greatly appreciate if any of them would reach out and contact us," Gordon said.

Who have you contacted? Most of the media in that area is based out of Norfolk/Virginia Beach.

I just went to the Newport News Police web site and found it to be a sad comedy of incompetance and poor information. It is no wonder they are no closer to finding Kathleen. How do they determine that the individual in the sketch is not considered a suspect in the disappearance if he was seen near her apartment at the time she disappeared? I understand that they may be trying to put a potential suspect at ease and hope he comes forward. But it seems to be an amateur ploy that would work on a very few types of people. Otherwise someone who might have suspicions regarding the individual in the sketch may be dissuaded from giving the police a name since "he is not considered a suspect".

Marilynilpa, just wondering - I know you said you contacted news/tv, so maybe you've done this already, but I was thinking about Kathleen at work today and trying to get more out there. Have you had a look at the media in and around Newport News and Portsmouth to see if there are any columnists/article writers/freelancers who might respond to a "cause" story? So rather than just an update, something about Kathleen herself, about the culture of silence etc? I know that she tried to hide her job from family but even that tells it's own story. Perhaps something about her as a human being, someone's daughter/sister etc might do more than straight out crime reporting?

Thanks for the suggestion, I haven't done that. I'll get online and see who might be willing to do that kind of story.

I agree that the "culture of silence" angle might interest a columnist. If not, I have considered writing a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. If it gets published, that might create a little bit of interest.

"The squeaky wheel gets the grease" is a phrase I've heard all my life. In Kathleen's case, I intend to be the squeaky wheel.

Thanks again for your suggestion!

You may want to try WAVY 10 in Portsmouth VA. They are the local news channel that is based in downtown Portsmouth. They used to do a segment "10 on your side" that might be a vehicle that gets this story out there.
